Their paths cross unexpectedly when both are assigned in-school suspension. As their relationship develops, they face the challenges of their vastly different backgrounds and the expectations placed upon them. Alongside their story, the novel also delves into the life of Angela Wilmore, their English teacher, who is grappling with her own struggles. 

Zurenda's novel explores the complex connections between adults and teenagers, as well as the influence of the families we inherit and create. Inspired by the author's own experiences teaching in a South Carolina high school, the book offers an authentic and unflinching portrayal of the obstacles faced by public school teachers and the hardships endured by homeless children. 

With her debut novel, "Bells for Eli," already receiving critical acclaim and awards, Susan Beckham Zurenda is an author to watch.
