Explore the rich tapestry of chamber music through an extraordinary evening of contemporary and 20th-century compositions at the Strings Attached: Paul Marleyn, cello event. Taking place on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the Laudamus Auditorium in Winnipeg, this concert showcases the exceptional talents of renowned performers, including Ethan Allers, Dimi Kreshchenskyi, Elise Lavallée, Elation Pauls, and Karl Stobbe, alongside the featured cellist, Paul Marleyn. 

The evening begins with Webern's avant-garde String Trio, Op. 20, setting the innovative tone for the concert. Witold Lutoslawski's Sacher Variation for solo cello follows, captivating the audience with the emotive capabilities of this magnificent instrument. Chan Ka Nin's introspective Soulmate delves deep into the resonance of the cello, while Michael Matthews' String Sextet, specially composed for this concert, weaves intricate melodies into sparse textures. John Cage's iconic Five for 5 instruments challenges musical boundaries with its avant-garde brilliance, leading into Ana Sokolovic's rhythmic Vez, echoing with Slavic motifs.

Evoking a unique resonance, Giovani Sollima's Lamentatio embraces a sound both mournful and transcendently beautiful, as the cello blends with the singing cellist. Rhiannon Giddens' evocative At the Purchaser's Option for string quartet offers a modern reflection on echoes of the past. The concert concludes with the world premiere of Ilkim Tongur's commissioned String Sextet, adding another layer of artistry to the evening.

Before the concert, attendees have the opportunity to participate in a pre-concert SoundWalk led by Dr. Suzu Enns, an instrumentalist, clinician, and community music facilitator.
