Steinway Piano Gallery Ottawa is pleased to present an intimate concert series for music lovers. Experience music among a small group of fellow music lovers in an intimate setting, close enough to be a part of the music. We are grateful to our hosts of this concert series whose love of music and community has led them to open their homes for this exclusive series, and our artists are thrilled to be performing on the hosts' beautiful pianos. PROGRAM TBA ***Intermission*** TBA PETER HUM (piano) Pianist and composer Peter Hum has been a mainstay of the jazz community of Canada's capital for more than three decades. He has performed with his own groups in not only Ottawa, his hometown, but in leading jazz venues in Montreal and Toronto, as well as in jazz clubs and concert halls from Charlottetown to Vancouver. As a leader, he has released three albums of original modern mainstream jazz, and Peter's 2020 recording Ordinary Heroes received a four-star review in DownBeat magazine. In April 2025, Peter recorded his latest album of his compositions for sextet with an all-star Canadian band that included saxophonist Kenji Omae, trumpeter David Smith, guitarist Ted Quinlan, bassist Alec Walkington and drummer Ted Warren.As an accompanist, Peter counts himself very fortunate to have played with such Canadian jazz legends as saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, clarinetist Phil Nimmons, and guitarists Reg Schwager and Sonny Greenwich.Self-taught musically, Peter has also been a journalist with the Ottawa Citizen since 1990. He has covered a wide variety of beats at the newspaper, from Ottawa City Hall to criminal trials to the tech sector, and since 2012 he has been the Citizen’s restaurant critic. ALEC WALKINGTON (bass) Originally from Ottawa, Alec is one of the most in-demand bass players on the Montreal jazz scene. After studying at St. Francis Xavier University and Humber College, Alec moved to Montreal in 1985. He attained a Master’s Degree in Music from McGill University, where he now teaches classes in composition, improvisation and double bass. Alec has played with such visiting artists as Joe Henderson, Slide Hampton, Kenny Wheeler, Jimmy Heath, Curtis Fuller, Barry Harris, and Maria Schneider and has played since the 1980s with such Montreal stalwarts as Andre White, Dave Laing, Greg Clayton, Kevin Dean and the Altsys big band. _______________
Peter and Alec have been playing music together since they attended high school in Nepean in the early 1980s. They are close friends who enjoy a deep personal and musical rapport.
