This lecture, titled "Shakespeare's First Folio and Second Chance," will explore the significance of the 18 plays that were first published in the First Folio, with a special focus on Shakespeare's renowned work, The Winter's Tale. The lecture will delve into the idea that reading a play after witnessing its live performance offers a unique opportunity for a second chance to engage with the material. While the plot, characters, and dialogue remain largely unchanged, the experience is transformed by the shift in medium, allowing for a different level of imagination and attention.

During Shakespeare's lifetime, only about half of his plays were published, and it is even speculated that some were sold directly at the theaters. However, it wasn't until the First Folio was published that the remaining plays were given a chance to be immortalized in print. This lecture not only reflects on these 18 plays that appeared in print for the first time in the First Folio but also delves into The Winter's Tale, a play that explores the concept of second chances in a profound way.

This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required to secure seating. It will be presented by Carnegie Mellon University Libraries and the Center for Print, Networks, and Performance (CPNP), with additional support from the Department of English, The Frick Pittsburgh, the Humanities Center, the Center for the Arts in Society, the School of Drama, the Department of History, and the University Lecture Series.
