Creating Credible Characters An interactive mini masterclass which focuses on how to create relatable, memorable characters that captivate your audience from the very first page. £3.00 Per Person In this workshop, we will use a character creation tool to explore a step by step process of inhabiting the characters that we create through our story development and drafting processes. In order to create characters with depth and dramatic potential, we will each create a pen portrait of two of our chosen characters and define their fears, desires, strengths and weaknesses in order to create a fully rounded, realistic character that our audience can easily relate to and invest in. The more that our audience enjoys spending time with our characters, the more demand they have for our work. Susan Doherty is published author and visiting academic at York St John University and a postgraduate research supervisor for York Business School. With an MSc in Marketing and Higher Education she has worked as a marketing consultant creating web content and writing blogs for over ten years as well as creating and delivering training programs for a range of educational institutions and community organisations. After studying scriptwriting with the University of East Anglia in 2020 she began writing plays for stage and screen and has had her work performed at Louth Riverhead Theatre in 2024 and received a commission from Scunthorpe Theatres to develop and deliver their community participation program for creative writers in 2025. A member of Hamond House and keen supporter of the International Literary Festival, she is a judge of the 2024 Literary Prize for Scriptwriting. In addition, she also runs her own creative writing business where she offers group workshops, residential writing retreats and one to one online coaching sessions for new writers in the Yorkshire and Humberside area where she currently resides.
