Dit onderzoek verkent hoe Choreomania – het historische fenomeen van onbedwingbare, collectieve danswoede dat teruggaat tot de Middeleeuwen in Europa – mijn artistieke proces kan beïnvloeden en transformeren. De centrale vraag in deze studie luidt: Hoe informeert het fenomeen Choreomania mijn creatieve proces en beïnvloedt het de manier waarop ik een performance vormgeef?
De studie combineert een analyse van historiografische bronnen met een diepgaande observatie en documentatie van de artistieke processen van vijf artists-in-residence die Choreomania onderzoeken. In de volgende fase wordt een experimenteel laboratorium opgezet met drie try-outs, elk zorgvuldig gedocumenteerd, geanalyseerd en gereflecteerd. Deze try-outs dienen als middel om de zich ontwikkelende vorm van de performance te verkennen.
De uiteindelijke performances ontstaan uit een dynamische samensmelting van klassieke piano, improvisatie, beweging, stem, samenwerkingen met andere kunstenaars en de onvoorspelbare elementen van Choreomania. De studie wordt afgesloten met een diepere reflectie en synthese van het gehele proces.

This research explores how Choreomania—the historical phenomenon of uncontrollable, communal dancing ‘plagues’ dating back to the Middle Ages in Europe—can influence and transform my artistic process. The central question guiding this study is: How does the phenomenon of Choreomania inform my creative process and influence the way I shape a performance?
The study combines an analysis of historiographical sources with an in-depth observation and documentation of the artistic processes of five artists-in-residence investigating Choreomania. The next phase involves establishing an experimental laboratory with three try-outs, each meticulously documented, analyzed, and reflected upon. These try-outs serve as a means to explore the evolving form of the performance.
The final performances emerge from a dynamic fusion of classical piano, improvisation, movement, voice, collaborations with other artists, and the unpredictable elements of Choreomania. The study concludes with a deeper reflection and synthesis of the entire process.
Master Research Symposium
Van 7 tot en met 11 april 2025 vindt het jaarlijkse Master Research Symposium plaats. Tijdens deze bijzondere week presenteren masterstudenten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium hun artistieke onderzoeksprojecten in diverse vormen. Denk aan inspirerende uitvoeringen, beelden en video’s die hun artistieke zoektocht illustreren.
Als opwarmer voor het Symposium geven vier studenten een voorproefje van hun onderzoek in de Centrale Bibliotheek. Laat je verrassen door hun unieke inzichten en vernieuwende perspectieven.
