Join artists Dayle Palfreyman and August Ward in conversation with Kaiāwhina Whakaaturanga Assistant Curator Robbie Handcock about their work in our current exhibition Permissions. This is an opportunity to hear the artists discuss their practices and the processes behind this presentation, offering insight into the technical and conceptual detail of their work. Dayle Palfreyman moved to Tāmaki Makaura from Te Whanganui-a-Tara in recent years, and works across sculpture, installation and video. Dayle’s sculptural practice has primarily used metal, concrete, wood and beeswax to create environments that explore the edges of bodily autonomy through the tensions between the industrial and natural materials employed. Dayle graduated from Massey University in 2020 with a BFA (Hons) and has had exhibitions at play_station in 2020, City Gallery Wellington in 2022, at Enjoy Contemporary Art Space in 2022 and 2023, and the Physics Room in 2024. August Ward grew up in Tāmaki Makaurau and completed her MFA from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 2023. August’s painting practice is concerned with the visual markers of affluence and aspirational consumerism, in particular the emblems of fashion, beauty, interior design and reality TV. Working in oil and graphite, these symbols become pictorial playthings for colour, composition, and surface. August has exhibited in artist-run spaces and galleries, including Melanie Roger, Paper Anniversary, Envy, Paludal and Ivan Anthony (upcoming).

The sky towers high into the clouds, a landmark building in Auckland. Take a high-speed elevator straight up to the observation deck, and you can see the entire city, port and even the volcanic landscape in the distance. The glass floor area is soft but can&#39;t help but step on it to experience it once. The city lights at night are intertwined with the soft lights in the tower to create a dreamy atmosphere. The high-altitude walk and tower jump project at the top of the tower is full of excitement. Even if you don&#39;t try it, you can&#39;t be nervous just watching other people&#39;s challenges. Standing at that height, watching the wind and clouds move, there is an indescribable sense of freedom.

The SEALIFE Aquarium was a fun and interesting place with many exhibits and animals to see. The penguin exhibition was particularly cute, and you could really experience them up close. However, the aquarium was a bit small, and we only managed to see most of the exhibits in about 45 minutes. We had expected it to be larger. While it was still a fun place to visit, it might not be a must-do in Auckland.

The whole experience is great and it is a good place to understand New Zealand&#39;s history and culture. The museum is quite big, it is worth a long time to visit, there are many interactive exhibits, especially suitable for walking the baby. There is also Chinese service, recommended.

Mount Eden

Mountain climbing

Although Mount Eden is not high, you can overlook the whole of Auckland from the top of the mountain, and the view is particularly wide. The remains of the crater are clearly visible, covered with green grass, a peaceful green. It is not difficult to walk all the way up. You can also see sheep grazing on the hillside. Their leisurely appearance makes people can&#39;t help but take a few more photos. The wind on the top of the mountain is very strong, but it is also very fresh, which makes people feel particularly bright. It is a good place that does not require tickets or planning, but can leave very deep memories.
