Pastels and Poets is a Public Art UHS workshop instructed by Julia Kidd that brings together the worlds of fine arts and creative writing. This workshop is open to participants of all skill levels and aims to celebrate both art forms as conceptual modes of creation. In each two-hour session, attendees will have the opportunity to explore a piece of public art located on the University of Houston campus. Julia Kidd will introduce one of these artworks and then share a poem that serves as a conceptual companion to the piece. Participants will then work with Julia to create diptychs of free verse poetry and pastel drawings on site. By combining the mediums of visual art and creative writing, this workshop allows for expression through vibrant colors and textual experimentation. The result is a memorable piece of art where the written word and stunning visuals come together. Whether you choose to attend one session or all three, materials such as student-grade pastels, paper, and drawing boards will be provided. However, participants are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks and preferred writing and drawing materials. Julia Kidd, a German–Puerto Rican artist, will guide the workshop. She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Houston and is known for her artistic practice centered around intimacy and the expansion of portraiture. With her background in studio arts and art history, Julia brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the workshop. Upon graduating, she plans to continue teaching, take on more roles as an art director, and exhibit her work internationally.
