Pastels and Poets is a Public Art UHS workshop led by Julia Kidd, an accomplished artist and instructor. This unique workshop aims to unite the worlds of fine arts and creative writing, offering participants of all skill levels an opportunity to explore these two expressive mediums. The sessions take place on the beautiful campus of the University of Houston, where attendees will be introduced to various pieces of public art. Julia will not only showcase one of these captivating artworks but also read a poem that serves as a conceptual companion to the piece. Inspired by this fusion of visual and literary art, participants will then have the chance to create their own diptychs of free verse poetry and pastel drawings on site. By marrying the written word with stunning visuals, attendees will be able to produce truly memorable and impactful artwork. This workshop series invites individuals to drop in for a single session or join for all three, allowing for flexibility and convenience. Necessary materials such as pastels, paper, and drawing boards will be provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own preferred sketchbooks and writing/drawing materials. Julia Kidd, a talented artist with a diverse background, will guide the workshops, drawing from her experience in Studio Arts and Art History. Her unique artistic approach revolves around the exploration of intimacy and the expansion of portraiture. Currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Houston, Julia also teaches undergraduate painting studios and serves as an IA for a Contemporary Painting Art History course. Following graduation, she hopes to continue teaching, take on art directing roles, and exhibit her work internationally.
