Newport News Public Library will present an Author Talk and Book Signing with national bestselling author Omar Tyree on Saturday, June 21, 2025, 11 a.m. – 12:40 p.m., at the Main Street Library (110 Main Street). The Author Talk will focus on “The Phenomenon of Flyy Girl and The Urban Classics of Omar Tyree.” Omar Tyree is a celebrated and award-winning author, journalist, lecturer, poet, screenwriter, songwriter, and filmmaker from Philadelphia and was the youngest star of the 1990s Black Literature movement. He is a New York Times bestseller, an NAACP Image Award winner, and a Phillis Wheatley Literary Prize recipient for his body of work as the proclaimed “Godfather of Urban Fiction.” Tyree inspired millions of new readers and thousands of new writers with classic urban fiction that included Flyy Girl, A Do Right Man, Single Mom, Sweet St. Louis, For the Love of Money, Just Say No! Leslie, Diary of a Groupie, What They Want, The Last Street Novel, and Pecking Order, along with Capital City, College Boy, One Crazy Night and Cold Blooded in his Urban Griot series. Tyree’s new novel CONTROL, is his debut psychological thriller, and his first new book in seven years. Set in the major metropolitan of Atlanta, Georgia, CONTROL leads readers through the culturally diverse landscape of the Black American community. Tyree has also published works of nonfiction, children and young adult books, poetry, business books, international thrillers, short stories and autobiographies Admission to the Author Talk and Book Signing is free, no reservations required.
