Details

The March 8, 2024 Pop-Up event at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz is an exclusive opportunity for BSSC members. This event is specially designed for beginners, but all skill levels are welcome to participate. The Black Surf Santa Cruz Pop-Up Program (PUP) aims to create an inclusive environment where participants can learn how to surf, build community, and gain valuable insights from the ocean. The event provides all the necessary equipment, including wetsuits and snacks, making it accessible for everyone. While surfing experience is not required, participants should have basic swimming skills. If you need to learn how to swim, you can pre-register for the Prepare to Pop-Up Program. This program offers a chance to learn swimming skills in a supportive community setting and develop a stronger bond with the ocean. During the Pop-Up Program, sessions typically last up to 3 hours and may be subject to changes based on tides and weather conditions. The program offers coaches, equipment, facilitators, and an enriching experience, completely free of charge for Black Surf Santa Cruz members. The event begins with a pre-session meeting, where participants can build connections, learn about land stewardship, and honor indigenous ancestors. A land-based session follows, where participants will receive guidance on ocean safety, surf history, and best practices. This session also covers entering and exiting the water safely, as well as the fundamentals of surfing. In the water session, participants can put their learning into practice and enjoy the experience of surfing alongside others. Afterward, there will be a community healing and debrief session, providing a space for reflection and restoration. By participating in the March 8, 2024 Pop-Up event, attendees can expect physical and spiritual wellness, community building, and a deeper understanding of local history, ocean safety, and surf best practices. The ocean's lessons, such as courage, self-actualization, patience, and a sense of belonging, can be applied to everyday life. Please note that each session requires a minimum of 4 participants and can accommodate a maximum of 8 participants. The event is tide-dependent and subject to changes or cancellations. To stay updated, please check your email on the morning of the event. Participants must be 18 years or older to join. Black Surf Santa Cruz is dedicated to providing physical and spiritual wellness through surfing for historically excluded groups and communities of color. Their programs focus on joy, liberation, and mental well-being. Join the March 8, 2024 Pop-Up event to learn and grow with this inspiring organization.
