Join the conversation about industrial design at the Made in America event, honoring the memory of D-Crit faculty member Ralph Caplan. This event features photographer Christopher Payne, who will discuss his new book, Made in America. Payne, an architect by training, captures the intricacies of industrial production processes through the lens of design. The event will include an onstage conversation with design journalist Julie Lasky. Doors open at 6:00pm, with speaking beginning at 6:30pm. The 2023 Ralph Caplan Memorial Lecture is produced by SVA MA Design Research, Writing & Criticism, and supported by SVA BFA Interior Design: Built Environments and Museum of 21st Century Design.

In his book, Made in America, Christopher Payne explores American manufacturing and the industries that have shaped the country. From traditional textile mills to cutting-edge 3D printing, Payne takes us on a visual journey through the diverse world of manufacturing. Each photograph showcases the beauty and ingenuity behind the transformation of raw materials into useful objects. Featuring a foreword by Kathy Ryan and an introduction by Simon Winchester, the book's large format beautifully displays Payne's dynamic color photographs.

Christopher Payne is an acclaimed architectural and industrial photographer, known for his keen eye for design and the built form. Julie Lasky, a journalist and design critic, will join him on stage for a conversation about the book and the world of industrial design.
