2 Experienced Naturalists, Alison Dixon, Senior Planner for Environment & Energy Program of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, and Mitch McCue, Q-MoB resident naturalist, will lead us on a relatively easy hike from Campbell Falls State Park in CT to the spectacular falls nearby in Massachusetts. You will see many streams, cliffs, forest, and of course one of the most spectacular falls in the region. We will also learn about the effects of climate change on those eco-systems and how they are adapting.
This hike is part of a series of easy hikes and bike rides & a Pride Paddle planned by Q-MoB and the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission that will explore some beautiful but climate-change affected eco-systems in the Berkshires, and help us appreciate the many factors that are providing resiliency to these waterfalls and water ways, and the factors that are threatening them.
ABOUT THIS SERIES OF ECO-HIKES, ECO-BIKE RIDES, & PRIDE PADDLE:
This hike is part of a series of easy hikes, bike rides, and a canoe paddle designed to provide an opportunity for participants to learn about and participate in community conversations about climate change while enjoying a variety of eco-systems. This series is a part of the larger Western Massachusetts Regional Unpaved Roads project funded by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Municipal Vulnerability Program (MVP).
These competitive MVP grants support communities in identifying climate hazards, developing strategies to improve resilience, and implementing priority actions to adapt to climate change. The MVP program funds community-driven climate resilience planning and action. Nearly 100% of the Commonwealth’s municipalities participate in the program and over $180 million has been awarded for local climate resilience planning and projects since its inception.

On the morning of the hike, please check the weather for the hike location before you leave home so you know current conditions and how to dress for them. Please let us know your cell phone number when you register so we can text you 2 hours before the event should an unexpected weather threat arise that causes us to have to cancel or postpone the activity.

Explore the &quot;Mount Fuji&quot; of the Southern Hemisphere - Mount Egmont in New Plymouth
New Plymouth, a city on the west coast of New Zealand&#39;s North Island, is not only the capital of Tananaqi Province, but also the only seaport city on the west coast. It is a sister city with Kunming in my country and Mishima in Japan, sharing the bond of culture and friendship.
🌈 Attractions
Mount Egmont, known as the most perfect volcano in New Zealand, stands proudly at an altitude of 2,518 meters. It is surrounded by a vast plain. No matter from which angle you look, you can feel the visual shock as if you are under Mount Fuji. Mount Egmont has a history of 120,000 years, and the last eruption was in 1775. Volcanologists believe that it is currently in a &quot;dormant&quot; state, not dead, which makes it full of mystery and expectations.
🌋 History and Culture
The legend of Mount Egmont is equally fascinating. Legend has it that Mount Taranaki was once part of the Tongariro volcanic group, but was discovered by Tongariro when it was having a tryst with Tongariro&#39;s lover, the Pihanga volcano on Lake Taupo. Mount Taranaki fled south in shame, leaving behind the scar of the Wanganui River. From then on, it guarded the land alone, as if hiding its sadness in a cloud of tears.
🕒 Scenic Area Opening Hours
The Mount Egmont Scenic Area is open all year round. Even in summer, visitors can enjoy the snow on the top of the mountain and experience the changes of the four seasons.
🚶&zwj;♂️ Route Recommendation
It is recommended to start from the Mangorei Track Trailhead and climb along the Pouakai Track and Tarn. This path has both gentle sections and 45-degree steep stairs. When you see the Pouakai Hut, it means you are about to reach the top of the mountain, and the view there will make your hard climb worthwhile.
