ShinJa Lee is a first-generation fiber artist and pioneer in Korea, and an educator who is passionate about nurturing the younger generation. Before fiber art was introduced as a new concept in Korea, she experimented with materials common in daily life, expanding the breadth and depth of fiber art as the "art of thread". This exhibition is the artist's first solo exhibition in North America, presenting the artist's bold innovation in fiber art creation through 40 textile works, weaving models and sketches spanning from the 1950s to the early 2000s.

I have been visiting BAMPFA for the past few months on the first Thursday of the month (which is a free admission day). I always find their exhibits interesting, if not spectacular. The building is impressive, and the gallery spaces range in size from intimate to cavernous, making each space perfectly scaled to present the works. There are some gems in their permanent collection that are not on permanent display but are mixed in with loans in themed temporary exhibitions. The staff at the front desk and in the bookstore are both helpful. Considering BAMPFA is not a major museum, I find their bookstore/gift shop to be quite good. I would definitely recommend visiting on these free days. I have never actually paid the admission fee, but I think it is worth it, especially for those who are out of town on these free Thursdays.
