This FREE FAMILY EVENT will take place at the Village Books and Paper Dreams in Bellingham, Washington. In the 1980s, Mia and her best friend, Lara, grew up in the same cul-de-sac in a northern fishing community. Despite their different backgrounds, Mia and Lara's friendship remained strong. However, Mia couldn't help but notice the different treatment she received from adults simply because she was Indigenous. Kim Spencer, a graduate of the Writers Studio at Simon Fraser University, skillfully explores these themes in her novel, Weird Rules to Follow. The book has received widespread acclaim, winning the Jean Little First-Novel Award, the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People, the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award, and a Pacific Northwest Book Award. It was also a finalist for the prestigious Governor General's Literary Awards. Kim Spencer, a proud member of the Ts'msyen Nation in northwest BC, currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.
