There aren&#39;t enough superlatives to do justice to this little gem of an art gallery. The Museum of American Western Art is located in downtown Denver and houses the collection of businessman and philanthropist Philip Anschutz. The artwork is a survey of the American West from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The museum is small, but occupies three floors and contains over 300 paintings and sculptures. All of the major painters who painted the West in the 19th and early 20th centuries are represented, as well as many lesser-known but equally excellent painters. The second floor, where the gallery begins, features expedition artists and illustrators who accompanied military and other expeditions in the early 1800s. Thus, these paintings provide a record of the West before it was changed by settlement. The next floor features artwork from the Taos Society of Artists from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The most notable artists associated with Western painting are on this floor. The next floor down is the fourth floor, which displays a variety of art styles used to depict the American West. The works range from early impressionist and contemporary realist expedition works to art from the Great Depression era. Through the Federal Art Project sponsored by the U.S. government. The building itself is a work of art. This is a Victorian building that was built in 1880 as a girls&#39; school. A few years later it was forced into foreclosure and then sold to two of the most notorious gamblers in the West, who turned it into a hotel and gentlemen&#39;s club. It had a very colorful history after that until it was renovated and restored to its Victorian charm to house the current Heart of the American West collection. If you love art, this is an experience not to be missed.
