Join artist JooYoung Choi and Frank Oz, known for his work on Muppets, Star Wars, and Sesame Street, for an engaging and enlightening conversation at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Taking place in-person at CAMH, Choi will discuss her captivating artwork, which includes the impressive large-scale sculpture Nova Trekkers and the Vehicle for Change (2023). Oz will join the conversation virtually, adding his unique perspective to the discussion. Together, they will delve into topics such as creativity, legacy, resilience, and the importance of making art accessible to all. JooYoung Choi, an astro-futurist world builder, weaves together intricate narratives within her artwork. Through mediums such as painting, video, sculpture, animation, puppetry, music, community projects, and installation art, Choi creates a multidimensional and imaginative aesthetic practice. Her interdisciplinary projects seamlessly blend elements of her own experiences with fantastical elements, addressing significant themes such as anti-racism, gender inclusivity, post-traumatic growth, and spirituality rooted in social justice. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Choi later immigrated to Concord, New Hampshire through adoption. She returned to South Korea during her studies, reconnecting with her birth family. Choi's work has been showcased at prestigious institutions including the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Parrish Art Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Project Row Houses, The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, and The Crow Museum of Asian Art. She has also participated in notable artist residencies such as the Lawndale Artist Residency and the Harvester Artist Residency. With a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA from Lesley University, Choi currently resides and works in Houston, Texas. Frank Oz, a highly acclaimed and versatile artist, has received numerous accolades throughout his impressive career. With four Emmy awards, The Art Director's Guild Award, The Comedy Award, the Saturn Lifetime Achievement Award, and a George Foster Peabody award, Oz's contributions to the entertainment industry are unparalleled. Best known for his performances with The Muppets and his involvement in the Star Wars films, Oz has also directed a wide range of successful feature films such as Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, In & Out, The Score, and Death at a Funeral.
