Join the Edinburgh Tool Library for a captivating concert fundraiser at the stunning Custom House in Leith. Emma Lloyd, a dedicated volunteer at ETL and a talented musician, will be showcasing the Viola Diablo, a remarkable instrument created by renowned Leith-based luthier Jonathan Hill.

This event offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in an evening of classical and contemporary music while also exploring the workshop where the Viola Diablo was brought to life. Emma Lloyd has collaborated with Jonathan Hill, the award-winning luthier and recipient of the prestigious Heritage Crafts Woodworker of the Year Award in 2022, to introduce this extraordinary 12-stringed fiddle. With a combination of 4 gut playing strings and 8 metal resonant strings, the Viola Diablo produces a captivating and ethereal sound that truly lives up to its name.

The doors will open at 7pm, giving you the chance to visit both Custom House and the ETL workshops, as well as Jonathan's workshop where the Viola Diablo was meticulously crafted. Meet the talented makers behind this exceptional instrument and learn more about the incredible work carried out by the ETL team of dedicated volunteers.

At 8pm, Emma will take the stage for a mesmerizing 45-minute set on the Viola Diablo. Her performance will showcase a diverse range of pieces, including Swedish folk tunes and an electronic composition of her own. Throughout the set, there will be informative talks from Chris Hellawell, the founder of ETL, Jonathan Hill, who will provide insights into the design and creation of the Viola Diablo, and Emma herself.

This event is a fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards the Edinburgh Tool Library's outreach program. By attending, you'll be supporting the ETL's mission to provide DIY and woodworking workshops within the community. Please note that while the main entrance to Custom House is not wheelchair accessible, the event itself, spanning across Custom House and Custom Lane, can accommodate wheelchair users. Tickets are available for purchase, and seating is not allocated. The majority of seats are standing or on the Custom House staircase. If you require a stool for accessibility reasons, please get in touch with Alys to make a reservation.
