At the upcoming Crit Night, Erin Johnson, a renowned visual artist and filmmaker, will unveil her completed short film titled Cayo Santiago (2023). This captivating film takes viewers to a picturesque islet off the coast of Puerto Rico, which is home to the world's longest-running primate research center. Through narration by staff member Nahirí Rivera Barreto, the film delves into themes of opacity, fantasy, labor, and surveillance. Watch as the camera captures the haunting aftermath of Hurricane Maria, revealing the intricate connections between extraction, interspecies relationships, and Puerto Rico's annexation as a state of exception.

Prepare to be mesmerized by the improvisational music of Irreversible Entanglements, a liberation-oriented free jazz collective. Guided by the powerful words of Julius Lester, the group aims to use culture as a means of raising political awareness and consciousness. Their music serves as a rock in a weary land and a shelter in a time of storm. Join them on this transformative musical journey as they explore the responsibilities of cultural workers in a revolutionary context.

After the program, enjoy the musical stylings of Matt Evans, a talented Brooklyn-based drummer and producer. His electro-acoustic compositions transport listeners to surreal sonic worlds, inspired by millennial esoterica, natural phenomena, and science fiction. Experience his rhythmic, post-ambient music that has been praised for its hyperreal and phantasmal qualities.
