Mit der Fertigstellung des ZK/U-Ausbaus im Herbst 2024 entsteht durch den Erweiterungsbau des ehemaligen Güterbahnhofs eine Spielstätte für Berlin, die bereits seit 2012 einen eigenen institutionellen Weg in der Verbindung von globalen Diskursen und lokaler Praxis eingeschlagen hat. Mit den neuen Flächen – einer öffentlichen Dachterrasse sowie Ausstellungs- und Workshopräumen – wird eine noch größere Sichtbarkeit und Zugänglichkeit erreicht. In Zusammenarbeit mit Peter Grundmann Architekten wurde die ehemalige Wärme- und Lagerhalle behutsam in eine ganzjährig nutzbare Versammlungsstätte verwandelt. Auf dem Dach des ZK/U ist eine neue „Urbane Bühne“ – eine öffentlich begehbare Dachterrasse – entstanden, die sowohl von der Nachbarschaft genutzt als auch von den täglich über 180.000 vorbeifahrenden Pendler:innen gesehen werden kann. Mit dem Projekt Commons Cosmodrome beginnt das ZK/U ein neues Kapitel seiner Geschichte, vom Güterbahnhof hin zu einem Kunststandort des Gemeinsamen. Vom 12. bis 15. September 2024 feiert das ZK/U seine Wiedereröffnung – ein Moment des Aufbruchs und der Begegnung. In den Eröffnungstagen reflektiert das ZK/U die gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre und möchte Narrative und Formate entwickeln, die neue Perspektiven auf die gesellschaftliche Allmende eröffnen. In der neuen Hülle versammeln sich menschliche und nicht-menschliche Stimmen, um den Kosmos des Gemeinsamen zu erkunden. Es ist ein Willkommensgruß an alle, die Teil dieser Reise sein möchten – Künstler:innen, Nachbar:innen und Neugierige – und ein gemeinsamer Blick auf die Bewegungen am gesellschaftlichen Firmament. Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) is a famous Protestant church in Berlin, the German capital, located on the museum island in the center of the city, adjacent to the Spree River. This magnificent church is not only the religious center of Berlin, but also an important landmark and tourist attraction in the city. The history of the Berlin Cathedral dates back to the 15th century, when there was a smaller church at the same location. The existing cathedral was built from 1894 to 1905 under the orders of the German Emperor Wilhelm II to serve as the court church of the Hohenzollern family. The original church was demolished in the late 19th century to make way for a new, more grand church. The Berlin Cathedral was designed in Renaissance and Baroque style by architect Julius Raschdorf (Julius Raschdorff). Its gorgeous exterior and exquisite interiors reflect the characteristics of the new Baroque architecture. The church is 98 meters high and its green dome is an important part of the Berlin skyline. During World War II, the Berlin Cathedral was severely damaged, especially when an airstrike in 1944 caused the dome to partially collapse. After the war, the restoration of the church continued for decades, and was finally completed in 1993. ⛪️ The interior of the church is gorgeously decorated with many exquisite sculptures, paintings and mosaics. The altar paintings and pulpit on the central altar are particularly striking. ⛪️ Berlin Cathedral has a pipe organ built by William Sal (Wilhelm Sauer), one of the largest and most important historical pipe organs in the world. Visitors can climb 270 steps to the observation deck of the church dome, from which you can overlook the magnificent view of central Berlin.
