Join the Civic Thursday meeting featuring a special guest appearance by Jesse 'Chuy' Varela, a prominent figure in the Bay Area's LatinX music scene. With a deep-rooted passion for music, Chuy has pursued his musical journey from a young age, playing the guitar in Mexican bands and even during his time in the army. He studied music at Cal State Hayward but later switched to mass communications, exploring print, TV, and radio. Chuy's career in radio began at KBBF in Santa Rosa, the country's first bilingual radio station, followed by KPFA, where he served as Co-Director of Public Affairs and eventually became the Music Director. While at KPFA, Chuy also worked at KJAZ, gaining experience as a production assistant and recording engineer. In the mid-80's, Chuy joined KCSM, where he introduced Bay Area listeners to the captivating world of 'Latin Jazz' and has since built a dedicated and loyal audience. He currently serves as KCSM's Music Director and co-hosts Jazz in the Afternoon with Melanie Berzon. Chuy's expertise and positive demeanor have made him a trusted voice in the industry. In addition to his radio work, Chuy is a respected music writer, contributing liner notes to albums and reviews to various publications. Don't miss the opportunity to tune in and experience Jesse 'Chuy' Varela's captivating shows, Latin Jazz on Sunday afternoons from 2pm to 6pm, and Jazz in the Afternoon from Monday to Wednesday, also from 2pm to 6pm. The Civic Thursday meeting will take place at the Oakstop - California Ballroom in Oakland. Remember to arrive early, as networking and registration start at noon, and the meeting will begin promptly at 12:30 pm.
