Join the DesignTO Festival in Toronto for the unveiling of Cate McGuire's captivating window installation, "Seeing it through," at Swipe Design | Books + Objects. As part of her ongoing project, "putting things together," McGuire utilizes cut-out MDF panels that resemble folded paper chains from our childhood, connecting a collection of small, collaged scenes. These "paper chains" create a three-dimensional effect when viewed from afar, despite their flatness. McGuire's collages are composed of fragments of magazine photos, cleverly arranged to mimic real places. Offering a unique viewing experience, the installation can be seen from both inside and outside the building. From the interior, spectators will encounter various exterior views, while from the exterior, they will be treated to a glimpse of assorted interiors. The artwork, presented in a monochromatic palette of black, white, and shades of grey, complements the muted tones of the season. The small collages themselves resemble windows, further enhancing the immersive experience. Cate McGuire, a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist and designer, skillfully combines diverse mediums such as painting, drawing, textile, photography, printmaking, and collage, both analog and digital, to construct emotionally evocative spaces inspired by the natural and built world.
