Marguerite Périgord is locked in the attic of her family home, a towering Chelsea house overlooking the stinking Thames. Her mother is concerned that Marguerite's engagement to a much older, near-penniless solicitor, will drag the family name into disrepute and this simply won't do. For company Marguerite has a sewing machine, Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management and a carrion crow who has come to nest in the rafters. Restless, she spends her waning energies on the fascinations of her own body, memorising Mrs Beeton's advice and longing for her life outside. As Marguerite's patience turns into rage, the boundaries of her mind and body start to fray.  Probably one of the best books I've read this year! It felt like an unholy mix of Ottessa Moshfegh and Leonora Carrington, whilst still being very much its own thing … I loved it  - Julia Armfield, author of Private Rites and Our Wives Under The Sea About the author: Heather Parry is a Glasgow-based writer and editor, originally from South Yorkshire. Her debut novel, Orpheus Builds a Girl, was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year Award and longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize. She is also the author of a short story collection, This Is My Body, Given For You, and her first nonfiction book, Electric Dreams: On Sex Robots and the Failed Promises of Capitalism, was released in 2024 as part of 404 Ink’s Inklings series. The Bridge of Sighs (Oxford University, UK) is officially called Hertford Bridge. It is a famous attraction at Oxford University. The construction of the Bridge of Sighs began in 1913 (completed in 1914). It crosses New College Road and connects the old and new parts of Hertford College. It is a famous attraction at Oxford University. It was designed by Sir Thomas Jackson. Because the bridge is similar to the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy, it is called the Bridge of Sighs. I came to Oxford University with a tour group and could only take a quick look.

The Bodleian Library - University of Oxford is the main library of the University of Oxford. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe (opened in 1602) and the second largest in the UK after the British Library. library. This is one of the 6 statutory libraries in the UK. There are many branches under the library, among which the Radcliffe Camera branch has become an important landmark of Oxford University.
