Die Schlüsselfigur der  Neuen Komplexität  Brian Ferneyhough konzentrierte sich auf die Beziehung zwischen den Möglichkeiten am Instrument, des Interpreten und der Notation. Vor allem die Flöte scheint das größte Potenzial für seine musikalischen Vorstellungen geboten zu haben. In der Tat gibt es insgesamt 6 Stücke für verschiedene Flöten, die zwischen 1970 und 2011 entstanden sind, und jedes Stück erfordert eine andere Herangehensweise. Während  Cassandra's Dream Song  eine moderne und komplexe Transkription eines antiken Mythos ist, ist  Superscriptio  ein mathematisch komplexer Kampf gegen die Natur der Piccoloflöte.  Sisyphus Redux  birgt die reale Gefahr, Camus'  Philosophie des Absurden  zu erleben, während  Carceri d'InvenzioneIIc  sowohl den Interpreten als auch das Publikum mit den Grenzen unerträglich hoher und lauter Register konfrontiert.  Unity Capsule  stellt den Interpretenaufgrund der extremen Länge eines solch komplexen Stücks auf die Probe, während Mnemosyne die Grenzen der Information in notierter Musik überschreitet. Dieses Projekt zielt darauf ab, Ferneyhoughs kompositorisches Vokabular zu verstehen und die Grenzendes zeitgenössischen Flötenspiels zu überwinden. „Es dauert eine Weile, bis man diese Grenze überwindet.
