Dr Joel Merriner, an Associate Lecturer in Art History at the University of Plymouth, will be delivering a captivating talk on the significant role of Soviet Bloc illustrations of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of The Rings in the realm of fantasy illustration. Taking place at The Levinsky Gallery in Plymouth on April 17, 2024, this event, titled "Bitesize: Tolkien Illustration in the Soviet Bloc," promises to shed light on the period of exceptional artistic innovation that emerged after decades of censorship. In 1981, the release of the first illustrated Soviet Bloc editions of The Lord of the Rings marked a turning point, igniting a surge of visual creativity. Driven by resourcefulness and ingenuity, talented artists amalgamated their personal inventiveness with Western artwork to produce new and captivating forms of Tolkienian imagery. Dr Joel Merriner's talk will delve into the significance of these artworks in contemporary discussions surrounding the transcultural nature of fantasy illustration. As an esteemed academic, Dr Merriner imparts his knowledge through teaching various modules on art historical methodologies and the history of book illustration at the University of Plymouth. Moreover, he is currently working on a monograph entitled "Illustrating The Lord of the Rings in the Soviet Bloc: Iconographies of Difference" for Bloomsbury Academic's Perspectives on Fantasy series.
