A picture is a whole world unto itself. Step beyond the frame and see what you find. Background Matters: Portraiture and Place in Aotearoa asks what can be revealed when we view the sitter of a portrait in the expanded field of their surroundings. In bringing the background to the fore, this exhibition subverts the hierarchy of subject and setting to consider the portraiture of Aotearoa New Zealand from a fresh vantage point. Drawn from the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata and other key galleries and collections, these works reveal narratives of belonging, self-expression, creativity and care. Far from an afterthought or decorative embellishment, the settings of these portraits speak not only to the vision of their artists but to the lives lived by their sitters, which extend far beyond the boundary of a frame. Whether exterior or interior, playful or sincere, familiar or made strange, by bringing the background into focus this exhibition asks us to consider the worlds we inhabit and our places within them. This exhibition is curated by Maddie Brooks Gillespie. Bringing it to Christchurch is a collaborative partnership between the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. Photo credit: Robert Cross Maddie Brooks Gillespie (she/her) is an emerging curator and academic based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. She is a recent graduate of the Tāhuhu Kōrero Toi Art History programme at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. Her practice centres primarily around the interdisciplinary field of Environmental Humanities, alongside explorations of memory, history, place and performance in art.

Christchurch can be called the most beautiful city in the South Island of New Zealand, and it is known as the Garden City. I think it is very suitable for citywalks. You can basically walk to all the attractions here, and you can fully experience the city&#39;s style.
This time, Christchurch&#39;s favorite attraction - Christchurch Botanic Gardens 🏕️

At first, an oak tree was planted to commemorate the marriage of Queen Victoria&#39;s eldest son. Now the entire green area occupies almost 1/4 of the left half of the city center of Christchurch (about 30 hectares). Next door is Hagley Park, and I deeply feel the &quot;waste&quot; of New Village with a large land and few people. Different seasons have different beauties. In spring, you can check in at the cherry blossom avenue in Hagley Park. Early summer to early autumn is a good season for viewing roses and hydrangeas, and late autumn is accompanied by red maples.

The main attractions in the park include:
🌹Rose Garden: This is the first time in my life that I know there are so many different varieties of roses. The colorful roses are the most suitable to describe the beautiful scenery in front of me.

🚣Rafting on the Avon River: You can choose to kayak yourself or have a boatman row a boat. Friends who don&rsquo;t want to take a boat can find a bench along the Avon River in the botanical garden and wave to friends on the boat. If you are lucky, you will see a mother duck bringing a group of ducklings ashore to play.

☕️Visitor Center: A white building located in the central area of ​​the park. You can visit the ILEX Buy coffee or food at the Cafe. Friends who choose to eat outside, please protect your food at all times. The birds around are watching closely. I witnessed with my own eyes that the tourist next door left her seat for less than 10 seconds, and a big bird took away her entire burger. I think this place is quite fun. It&#39;s right next to the airport parking lot. I stopped by before returning my car to Christchurch Airport and enjoyed free parking. The tickets I bought on Ctrip were very convenient to show directly. The entire tour lasted about two hours. I rode a polar car, experienced an Antarctic storm, watched a 4D movie, and saw penguins and sled dogs.
