Steamboat Springs Events in January, 2024

Avalanche Level 1: Motorized for Snowmobilers and snowbikers is a comprehensive 3-day class that serves as the bedrock standard for safe travel in the backcountry. This class is designed according to the guidelines set by the American Avalanche Association (A3). Hosted by Avalanche Savvy, a trusted name in Steamboat Springs Avalanche Education, the class will take place in various locations near Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Clark, and Craig in Northwest Colorado.

Participants will have the option to attend the first day of class via Zoom on Tuesday, January 23rd and Thursday, January 25th. The remaining two days, from January 26th to January 28th, will be dedicated to field sessions. This course is essential for individuals who wish to venture into avalanche terrain safely.

The Level 1 class covers a wide range of topics, including avalanche types, snowpack analysis, terrain assessment, route finding, and rescue techniques. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the factors contributing to avalanches, enabling them to assess the avalanche risk and make informed decisions to minimize exposure.

The class combines classroom instruction with practical field exercises to provide a well-rounded learning experience. Participants will delve into avalanche theory, weather patterns, and daily decision-making cycles. They will also learn to use essential tools such as transceivers, probes, and shovels for effective companion rescue. Field sessions will allow participants to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, honing skills like snowpack stability assessments and safe travel techniques.

Upon completion of the class, participants will receive a class completion certificate and a complimentary membership to the Friends of CAIC for the rest of the season, along with a Friends of CAIC membership card.
