Join James MacDonell from the Digital Scholarship Team at University of Southampton's Library Service on Artists’ Book 3D Digitisation. 3D scanning is a tool that has been widely used in the GLAM (Galleries, Library, Archives and Museums) sector as a way to engage audiences with material they otherwise would be unable to access or as a archival tool to create an accurate record of an object that is at risk of degradation. However, experiencing artwork in person goes beyond simply viewing the piece, and Artists’ Books are no exception to this. Indeed, in many cases they are highly interactive experiences that cannot be captured digitally. With exciting new technologies such as 3D printing and Augmented Reality it is increasingly possible to utilise digital tools to better imitate the experience of interacting with artist books as a whole while also allowing for individuals to develop a deeper understanding and connection to otherwise inaccessible objects. Join us for this 30 minute session and get the opportunity to experience some of these exciting technologies in person as we discuss the strengths, challenges and future opportunities of 3D Digitisation of Artist Books.
