In conversation with Eve. Come join us for an intimate discussion with the Grammy award winner Eve at Afrori Books. She later secured her place in music history as the first recipient of the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for her platinum single Let Me Blow Ya Mind with Gwen Stefani. Eve's career boasts three more chart-topping albums, groundbreaking moments in TV, film, and fashion, and now, a memoir that delves into her extraordinary journey. From navigating the tough streets of West Philadelphia to conquering the global stage, Eve's story is one of resilience, ambition, and unyielding grit. In her autobiography, Who's That Girl, she opens up about her rise as Eve of Destruction in a male-dominated hip-hop industry, the untold story behind *Scorpion*, and her internal struggles after Lip Lock. Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop

Oct 2, 2024 (UTC+0)
Brighton
Arts
Theater
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to work on your work in progress. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £5 and include a hot or cold drink. You can buy other drinks to keep you going during the morning. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop manager Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin invovled and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry. First Birthday Party! Neurodivergent Comedy Night with Lava Elastic | PLATF9RM Brighton - Coworking, Offices & Events

Oct 3, 2024 (UTC+0)
Brighton and Hove
Arts
Comedy
Joyfully Different is turning A WHOLE YEAR OLD on 3rd October, and to celebrate we’re inviting you to join us for a celebratory evening of neurodivergent comedy and fun. Don’t worry though, that doesn’t mean you have to listen to Mark’s questionable jokes all night… we’ve got the professionals in to perform for you! We’re partnering up for the evening with Lava Elastic, the UK's first openly neurodiverse comedy and poetry night. Neurodivergent performers often struggle to get booked, they might struggle to navigate the social codes around dealing with promoters, they may also struggle with organisation, and as a result of all these things there are plenty of talented people out there you simply don't get to see often… Lava Elastic was created to change that! Vive la difference! Lava Elastic was set by late-diagnosed performer and comedy/poetry promoter Sarah Saeed. Sarah got her diagnosis of autism in 2016 and then a diagnosis of ADHD in 2021, and has been performing and running her own performance might for several years so she had plenty of lived experience of these challenges herself. Since starting in 2017 Lava Elastic ran in Brighton for several years and then got Arts Council funding to do a couple of small tours to great responses from theatres in Manchester, Bristol, Kent and Stock-on-Tees amongst others. The event on the 3rd October is a special event especially for the Joyfully Different network. As usual the performers on the evening are brilliant, varied and the nights are always fun! Meet the performersCallum BrazzoCallum is an autistic performance poet, clothing brand Founder (Aut Couture) and TEDx speaker living in Lincolnshire. He aims to empower the autistic and otherwise neurodivergent community and be a bridge between them via his artistic endeavours...and has already been doing a great job of this so far. PaggyThe ‘endearingly eccentric’ Paggy Gacheva is an award-nominated autistic comedian with a high-energy style. Paggy is the creator of Stimmicanto, a 4-star solo show about autistic joy. Her comedy ‘manages to subvert every expectation’ and is described as ‘highly original and clever’. Get ready for a journey through a literal mind where unfiltered joy is strictly encouraged. Georgia ApsionLeicester Comedy Festival 2024 Silver Comedian finalist Georgia Apsion is a stand-up comic and writer, telling big-hearted tales from her life as a reluctant Brighton matriarch, maker of men, late bloomer and late diagnosis. Joel Cooper aka ‘The Porter’The Porter has been schlepping around kitchens forever and has seen many things. The comic creation of Joel Cooper, The Porter is a character based on Joel’s real-life adventures in kitchens. Like the time a Michelin star chef gave him vanilla-flavoured scrambled eggs. Which he called custard. Or the time he worked in two kitchens simultaneously at the place where Strictly Come Dancing is filmed. In 2022 and 2023 The Porter performed in Brighton at Brighton Open Air Theatre, Scratch Meet at The Rosehill, and the ‘Arts Cafe’ scratch nights run by Carousel. Joel Cooper is a comedian who just happens to be autistic, dual-heritage black and Jewish, pansexual and, of course, lives in Brighton. The homemade dumplings, chapatis, tortillas, stew, breads and chutneys. The artisan made guitars, drums and other musical instruments. Rugs, tapestry, beaded work, stained glass... Sean Wai Keung adds: “Handmade to me means human-touched, person-specific and one-of-a-kind. That could be something as intricate as a wood-carving or as in-the-moment as a slice of toast, something destined for the privacy and comfort of ourselves or for the giving love and kinship of others. It is embracing imperfections, experimentations and mistakes as part of the process and collaborating with nature on structure, form or content.” Covert Literary Magazine is supported by Arts Council England. Following the success of this year’s open-access peer-to-peer roundtables during our recent Summit, Photoworks is excited to announce the next round of conversations. These roundtables provided a valuable platform for practitioners and producers to come together, listen, and engage in meaningful conversations about the most pressing challenges facing our industry. We received fantastic feedback, with participants highlighting the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, seek advice, and explore solutions to the urgent issues they face. The sessions are designed for you and led by you, so we are seeking your input on discussion topics. Last year, we delved into subjects such as the role of art, survival strategies, funding, project development, publishing, exhibition-making, and collective practice. This year, we’re also introducing a new group discussion, where all participants will come together to share their insights. In advance of the event, we invite you to share 1-3 urgent issues facing artists, photographers, creatives and cultural workers today, which we’ll use as a starting point for this and future roundtables and open discussions. We look forward to your participation and hearing your thoughts, here. Vist Photoworks Weekender to find more events and activities hosted by Photoworks from 24-27 October. Painting
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop.
