Behrang Karimi | Morena di Luna
May 31–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC)
Hove
Karimi uses a range of methods, including monotypes, wood- and linocuts and gouache; combined, they create a lively dialogue between the artist and his work. Landscapes and views are often merely hinted at – humans are the true heart of Karimi’s work, appearing as portraits, in classic poses, as lying and seated nudes, alone and in groups. The room around them is diffuse, sometimes suggested by a doorway flooded with light, other times by another person appearing at the edge of the picture. Two people face one another, rigid as statues, separated by a light expanse of color, of water? His figures seem delicate and brittle, as does the scenery they move within. They all portray small episodes within a unique moment – like the worm crawling towards the apple – that disappear almost before we have fully grasped their significance.

Summer School: Still Life Oil Painting with Laura Smith | Draw Brighton
Jul 14, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Laura Smith
is a painter who loves every aspect of still life, from composing an arrangement to getting stuck into paint mixing. With demonstrations of her working methods and plenty of hands-on practice, you will be introduced to Laura’s still life-painting process whilst being encouraged to explore your own painting style. The course is designed for all levels of experience, with plenty of time for one to one support over the three days.
Click
HERE
to watch our Etc. Artist Talk where Draw Head Tutor Jake Spicer talks to Laura Smith about her painting and the progression of her career as an artist.
What to Expect
Day One: On the first day, Laura will guide you through making a complete still life painting, setting up your own still life composition with guidance and support. We will work from these set-ups, using oil paint to explore how we can elevate the ordinary things around us and imbue them with significance. There will be demonstrations of Laura’s work and approach throughout the day.
Day Two: We will work on another still life over the course of the second and third days, using what we’ve learnt in day one to create a new still life composition. We will look at how we can best use oil paint to explore our still life paintings.
Day Three: We will be continuing to work on our paintings with lots of individual support and guidance from Laura. There will be a critique at the end of the day where we will reflect on what we’ve learnt and look at the work created.
What to Bring
All materials will be provided, including oil paint, solvent, paper, canvas, palettes and palette knives. Easels, padded & backed chairs, drawing boards and small tables are provided for all students. You will need to bring:
Brushes suitable for oil painting

Rags & kitchen roll
You will be able to create your own set-up from materials provided but are encouraged to bring in your own meaningful objects, or items that you think might make for an engaging still life painting.

Ed Chinn
I'm focused on creating a positive impact through my work, for the wider community and (as much as possible) the planet. Essentially, leaving the world in a better place than I found it. I look to do this connecting people, ideas and insights via groups like People, Planet, Pint! as well as LinkedIn and Twitter. I’m a keen advocate of positive action through innovation, conscious capitalism and building a more circular economy. Via a range of sources, including fellowship of the RSA and podcasts (I highly recommend John Richardson and the Futurenauts!) to name a couple, I am passionate about educating myself about how I can be a better citizen and ancestor.

Melvins | CHALK
Jul 18, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Everything Is Fine
presents
Melvins
Formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington, the Melvins are one of modern music’s most influential bands. Founded by Buzz Osborne (vocals/guitar) with drummer Dale Crover joining a year later, the Melvins pioneered a genre-defying fusion of punk rock and heavy music. Over their four-decade career, they’ve released more than 30 original albums, countless live records, and numerous singles and rarities. Recent works include Thunderball (2025), a collaboration with noise artists extraordinaire Void Manes and Ni Maitres, Tarantula Heart (2024), a dynamic showcase of the Melvins’ range where the songs were written after the recording), Bad Mood Rising (2022), an intense, sludge-infused exploration of their signature sound, and Five Legged Dog (2021), a 36-track acoustic retrospective that reimagines their heaviest songs alongside covers of favorite artists.
Known for their relentless creativity and collaborations with friends like Jello Biafra, Mudhoney, and Fantômas, the Melvins have circled the globe many times over, bringing their brash and genre-busting sounds to audiences worldwide.
Today’s Melvins’ lineup features Osborne, Crover, Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) and Coady Willis (High on Fire, Big Business). The band’s history includes a variety of unique configurations, from the Osborne-Crover duo with Big Business’ Jared Warren and Coady Willis to a four-piece featuring the current line-up plus Butthole Surfers’ Jeff Pinkus, as well as Melvins Lite (with Mr. Bungle’s Trevor Dunn), the Melvins have embraced evolution and their roots simultaneously. Sometimes, you might even get the Melvins opening for the Melvins.
Thunderball (2025), is the Melvin’s newest album and a testament to the Melvins’ enduring legacy of innovation, defiance, and musical exploration.

Xzan is the biggest proponent for playing what you love and playing it loud. This mantra comes to life in the form of their high energy, hyperactive sets, ricocheting between queer pop party anthems and deep-cut club trax and wildcards. Xzan is an open-format DJ in the fullest sense, they have no respect for the boundaries of gender and hold the same reverence for genre. You can follow them at @xzandj to find out where they're playing next.
DJ amyfist
(they/she) is a gender fluid sober multi-genre dj who taught themselves to DJ in 2023 after getting sober. Music has always been a huge part of their life and they thank their sobriety for pushing them to explore their love of DJing after reflecting and feeling like they were missing out on a huge part of themselves - dancing! They love to party even more in sobriety, being a regular both on the dance floor and on the decks at sober raves across Brighton and London. They have a fresh multi-genre approach to mixing, getting the vibes just right across a variety of genres. Rainbows Charity Fundraiser at SEA LIFE Brighton | SEA LIFE Brighton
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Welcome to the
Rainbows Charity Fundraiser
at
SEA LIFE Brighton
! Join us for a private evening with all of our fishy friends, all for a great cause. Explore the wonders of the ocean while making a difference in the lives of others. Don't miss out on this opportunity to give back and enjoy a night at the aquarium.
This event is in aid of Rainbows, a charity ran hospice for children and young adults. They provide life changing support for families and children living with long-term illness. Rainbows offers a safe and friendly environment, allowing these families to experience music and arts sessions, hydrotherapy, respite and much more.
The reason why I am hosting this event is because Rainbows is close to my heart. For those of you who don't know, my niece Willow suffered 2 cardiac arrests at 3 weeks old. After spending the first few months of her life in hospital, undergoing a series of tests, operations and medicine alterations, Willow found her happy place in Rainbows. They didnt only support Willow and give her once in a lifetime experiences that wouldn't be safe for her to do outside of that environment, but they also were an incredible support to the family, allowing them to breathe after such a hard time. Without the care that Rainbows provides, many lives would be a lot different, and its for this reason we are hoping to raise some money to show how much they are appreciated and to ensure they can continue their amazing work.
Included in your ticket:
Glass of prosecco (or nozeco)
The opportunity to explore the aquarium
Glass bottom boat tour experience
Speeches from those you're supporting
Raffle with FINtastic prizes
Come and join us for an exciting evening at the oldest aquarium in the world!
Any donations welcomed. Cash only for raffle tickets.

Alternative Anatomy of a Flower with Chloe Briggs | Draw Brighton
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
In this weekend workshop artist and educator
Chloe Briggs
brings another innovative drawing class to the Draw studio. With her usual mix of subtle drawing exercises and thoughtful reflection Chloe will help us think about new ways to approach drawing flowers, plants and leaves, bucking the stricter traditions of botanical drawing in favour of a more embodied drawing process. Chloe is based in Paris and although her ‘Drawing is Free’ workshops have an international audience, she rarely teaches in the UK, so this will be a wonderful chance to learn from one of Europe’s most beloved drawing educators.
Chloe’s workshop will be followed by
Sarah Simblet’s ‘Drawing from Nature’
; if you’d like to make it a full five days of drawing from plants, flowers and natural forms you might want to consider signing up for both.
What to Expect
This energising two-day workshop will involve a wide range of exercises, responding to plants and flowers that we will bring to the Draw studio. The ideas we explore will compliment the exercises from Chloe’s
Patreon
resources, with Chloe providing personal feedback with Draw tutor Jake Spicer on hand to assist.
What to Bring
All materials are included with this workshop. You may wish to bring a sketchbook for taking notes and a plastic folder or art tube for taking your drawings home.
Getting to the studio
Approach New England House from the New England Street side of the building and walk up to the locked blue double doors next to the sign for the ‘Building Manager’s Office’. Wait to be let in or call the number on the door for entry - the studio is on level 5, Unit 1 South, just knock and walk in. There is parking at London Road car park, Elder Place & Trafalgar St car parks; Brighton station is a 5 minute walk from the studio

Walk and Draw: Ovingdean Village Life | St Wulfran’s Church.
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton and Hove
Join me for a fun day of walking and sketching in Ovingdean village just outside Brighton. Take in village life and the lovely summer with your sketchbook in hand. Whether you're an experienced artist or just enjoy doodling, this event is for everyone! Meet fellow sketchbook enthusiasts, get inspired by simple farm life, idyllic cottages and beautiful hills, and learn how to fill your sketchbook. I'll be sharing what materials I use and recommend, how to fill a sketchbook and tips for observational drawing. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to combine exercise and creativity in the great outdoors this summer! How to get there: From Old Steine or Sea Life Center in Brighton, you can take the 12/12A/14/27 to Greenways, and then walk for 5 minutes along Greenways road into Ovingdean. Alternatively you can take the 52 bus through Woodingdean, getting off at Ovingdean Store and walking down to the village green. Where to meet: We'll gather on the village green just outside St Wulfrans Church for a chat and from there we'll make our way on a easy but sligthly inclined walk around the village. With a gradual uphill walk , but we'll take it slow - all abilities are welcome! From this view, you'll see the small nestled village, it's a great viewpoint for drawing. And then back down to the village to end off the day. Hopefully just in time for a Wild Flour Pizza! What to bring with: Water/ Drink, snacks and sun protection ( Hat, sun cream etc. )Please wear comfortable walking shoes.Sketchbook - Any size, I would recommend an A5 size.Drawing Materials - can be a pencil, watercolours, paints or ballpoint pen! Anything goes!Recommended Materials: Sketchbooks: Daler Rowney Sketchbooks from Cass ArtRoyal Talens ( A bit pricey, but lovely paper!)Cass Art collection sketchbooks ( Great quality - perfect for beginners)Moleskin Sketchbooks ( Pricey, but lovely to draw and easy to use out and about)Pencils & Paints Like I've said - anything goes! So it's quite hard to say what materials are best, therefore I've just recommended a few if you're keen to get going with sketching from life. Faber Castell coloured pencils ( You can start by buying some of your favourite colours separately and build up your range in this way)Derwent Inktense Pencils ( Lovely saturated colours, great to play around with for watersoluable colours.)Watercolour set ( Windsor & Newton are great if you're invested in your art but if you're just starting out, a more cost effective water colour set will do the trick!)Tombow Brush pens - they are great for blocking out big areas of colour and to get a paintly effect)Reuseable brush pens ( These are great for filling with water, makes it super easy to paint on the go!)Meet your Me - your guide and sketchbook friend! Ulrike Mieke Hi there! My name is Ulrike Mieke, everyone calls me Mieke - I’m a freelance Illustrator from South Africa currently living in Ovingdean, Brighton with my husband. I love filling up sketchbooks drawing people and places, capturing moments! When I'm not drawing - you can find me working on picturebook projects or lecturing part-time at BIMM University, or just having a dig in my garden (village life!) Follow my work @ulrike_mieke

Speed Dating in Brighton for 30s & 40s | Fitz Regent
Jul 22, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
How Speed Dating Works in Brighton
When you arrive at the Brighton venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date.
You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't.
At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day.
Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches.
Post Event
No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. You have all day to tick as many people as you like from the night before. We guarantee you will find someone you will want to see again, otherwise we will give you your next
