THE GENIUS MYTH with Helen Lewis | The Walrus

Sep 3, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Cultural Experiences
The tortured poet. The rebellious scientist. The monstrous artist. The tech disruptor. You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius. You can also tell who it excludes, who it enables, and what it is prepared to tolerate . Taking us from the Renaissance Florence of Leonardo da Vinci to the Floridian rocket launches of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Helen Lewis unravels a word that we all use — without really questioning what it means. Along the way, she uncovers the secret of the Beatles’ success, asks how biographers should solve the Austen Problem, and reveals why Stephen Hawking thought IQ tests were for losers (before taking one herself). And she asks if the modern idea of genius — a class of special people — is distorting our view of the world. Helen Lewis will be 'In Conversation' with Rafael Behr , and she will also be signing copies of her new book, The Genius Myth , which will be available to purchase on the night. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Helen Lewis is a staff writer at The Atlantic who writes about politics and culture. Her first book, Difficult Women: A History of Feminism in 11 Fights , was a Sunday Times bestseller and a Guardian , Telegraph and Financial Times book of the year. She is the writer and presenter of the BBC podcast series The New Gurus and Helen Lewis Has Left the Chat , and co-host of Radio 4’s Strong Message Here , with Armando Iannucci. CHAIR BIOGRAPHY Rafael Behr is a political columnist for the Guardian . He is a former Political Editor for the New Statesman , Chief Leader Writer and Online Editor for The Observer , a business news reporter for BBC online and a foreign correspondent for the Financial Times , based in the Baltic region and Russia. Rafael is a regular contributor to Prospect Magazine , a guest on BBC and Sky News and a speaker at UK think tanks, and he also hosts the Politics on the Couch podcast. Thinking of coming with friends? Why not add to your special night out and enjoy the show in the comfort of a private booth and table . Booths are available for 4, 5 & 6 people. How Speed Dating Works in Brighton When you arrive at the Brighton venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Always friendly, always brilliant! Powered Up Business Networking (PUBNetworking) is an “out of hours” networking event that does away with the usual networking formalities. You’ll get to learn about the people behind the business - without a torrent of sales pitches …and bland tea and coffee. And you’ll get to have a lot of laughs whilst you’re at it! As you know, the best business connections are the people you want to spend time with outside of work. They’re the people you can trust, and whose company you enjoy. PUBNetworking is the place to find them. We have a loose structure, relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to learn from other business experts - with no strings attached. Just bring yourself, your e-ticket and your best smile and you’re good to go. Each event has four objectives… Meet awesome people We have a wide range of business people that attend. From start-ups to those with 30 years experience - across a wide range of industries. Everyone that attends is under no obligation to attend (we have no memberships, or contracts) so they’re there purely to meet people like you. Build long-lasting relationships We believe in a 'people buy from people' philosophy. In a relaxed environment, everyone feels comfortable and the connections you make are less forced, and more genuine. You’ll get to know each person in more detail - and have a good time doing so. Learn things without pitches Each event is productive and valuable. And we want everyone to walk away having learned something new. Our speakers offer genuine value, without sneaky sales pitches. We want you to take what you learn and use it to benefit your business. Have fun And above all, we want you to have fun. Sometimes that’s easier with a drink in your hand (it also makes the terrible jokes slightly more tolerable…). Our networking events are all about you, your passions and your business success. What’s happening this month? For this meeting, our speaker is the awesome Maria Jonsson and her talk is called "Ch-ch-ch-changes: turn and face the strange with more confidence." Change is constant, fast and often overwhelming, whether you're leading it or caught up in it. We'll look at why change feels so tough and how to handle it better, using simple tools you can apply in real life to support yourself and others. Location. Held at The In On The Square, we have their upstairs function room all to ourselves. And a great selection of drinks too! Plan for the night: 7.30 - Meet, greet & network. Your chance to sign in, grab a drink and speak to anyone you’d like. 7.50 - Introduction from Claire. 7.55 - Your chance to tell the room about yourself with a PUBNetworking difference… 8.20 - 1-2-1 with someone you like. 8.35 - Grab a drink/have a break. 8.50 - Presentation from Maria. 9.15 - Close the meeting and optional further networking. 9.30 - End/move into the bar of The Inn On The Square to have a further drink should you wish. Important: Due to the nature of the venue, and room size, there are a limited number of spaces available. If you’d like to come along and enjoy a great evening of laughs, laid-back networking and actionable business help, reserve your space with an e-ticket now. Tickets cost: £14.77 (And there’s probably no better way to spend it!) See you there! Information Source: Powered Up Business Networking | eventbrite

Family Events
Have you ever wanted to put your life story on paper (or laptop)? It can be daunting to know where to begin and what to include. This is where expert help can turn the process of chronicling your story (or part of your story) easier. Many people tell the course tutor, Joy Persaud, that their life is possibly not interesting or worthy enough to be written about, but, rest assured, your story is filled with unique experiences that may inspire, educate, astonish, move, and show resilience. Every story matters , whether you are famous or not. Writing your story to recognise and value what you have done can be suprisingly life-affirming and underline just how much you have achieved, been through, and learned, in your time on our planet so far. You may wish to do this for others – family, friends or the wider public – or for yourself. This course is most suited to people who are aged 35-plus, but is open to adults of all ages who are curious about the process. We'll talk about unlocking memory, biography structure, tackling difficult topics, bringing a story to life, what to keep in, what to leave out, and plenty more. There will be follow-up courses (dates TBC) to refine each of these elements, and more, and opportunites to book 1-2-1s with the course tutor so you can explore your writing in depth, in confidence. Testimonials You are better than my therapist ~ Jimmy Osmond, following a life story interview Reading it back, there's so much I now realise I have done in my life ~ biography client Thank you for helping me to capture my voice so well ~ biography client I loved my sessions with Joy - she is fun and easy to work with, offering me insights into the writing process that I use every day. She has a way of stimulating my thinking that really surprised me. She is very supportive and encouraging - she is outstanding. I can't recommend her enough ~ 1-2-1 editorial coaching client I don't normally enjoy talking about myself, but you made the process enjoyable ~ business biography client Information Source: Joy Persaud | eventbrite

What is EFT? An open circle to explore EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique aka tapping) together in a safe, non-judgemental and supportive way. EFT is a somatic and cognative release tool which focusses on the links between body and mind, helping to work through troublesome emotions and even help you understand and work with trauma (the latter in a 1:1 space rather than a circle). It helps to regulate your nervous system so that you feel more calm, in control of your emotions, and understand yourself on a deeper level. The pieces of the puzzle come together. What to expect A welcoming sharing circle Time for journaling so you can get some head space A beautiful guided meditation Movement exercises to encourage landing in the body Tapping (of course!) ***Please bring a notepad, pen and water bottle Who is it for? Everyone. In my opinion EFT should be taught at school because it’s the safest and easiest tool to use with or without a practitioner. Since it helps you understand and regulate your emotions and nervous system, I believe it is The Essential Tool every human should have in their pocket Why should I come? You’re curious about how it could help you. The idea of a sense of belonging in a group appeals to you There’s something you’d like to let go of There’s something you’d like to welcome IN to your life You want to explore your mind and feel more in control of your emotions Why work with Jess I am an intuitive energy-led practitioner that helps and guides others to heal themselves. I’ve been certified as a coach and NLP Master Practitioner since 2018 and I also use the healing modalities of reiki and sound to offer a truly unique mix of tools, tailored for my clients needs. I have used EFT for many years; when I used to struggle with sleep and anxiety, it was a close friend. Then I decided to get qualified in EFT early 2024 as I wanted to be able to use in my coaching sessions with clients. In July 2024, I suddenly found myself in hospital with sepsis; as I prepared for emergency surgery, it was EFT I turned to in the terror of staring death in the face. You are not defined by the hand you are dealt, but by how you deal with it. Tapping and coaching can help you to self-resource the answers to your perceived problems. If you have any questions please email me on hello@jessnicks.com or drop a line on instagram @jessnickscoaching for a voice note reply.
