Beaver Ecology and Field Signs | Kingcombe Visitor Centre

Jul 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Toller Porcorum
Cultural Experiences
Delve into the ecology of beavers and discover what makes them such vital ecosystem engineers. Take a trip to the Dorset Wildlife Trust Beaver Project to see the incredible habitats created by the beavers. Beavers are nocturnal animals, so we hope to catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures during our evening visit to the site. Steve has been working in conservation for 20 years, with the last 15 years working for Dorset Wildlife Trust. As the dedicated beaver project officer, Steve will teach you about the fantastic work happening here in the heart of West Dorset. In February 2021 a pair of Eurasian Beavers were released into an enclosed site in West Dorset. Following a classroom based session to learn about beavers' ecology, Steve will take you from the Kingcombe Visitor Centre to visit the project where you will experience first hand the transformation that has occurred in this unique habitat. Dorset Wildlife Trust has been working closely with partner organisations to monitor the beavers and learn more about their ecology. Steve will show you the changes to the site and you will have the opportunity to learn about their impacts on the hydrology and biodiversity. Day Course: £75. All money raised helps to support the vital conservation work of Dorset Wildlife Trust, protecting wildlife now and for future generations to come. Times: Arrival from 3:45pm. The course will start at 4pm and finish at around 9pm. What to bring: Please bring any food for the evening. Due to the nature of the wetlands, wellies are essential. Film
Wunderkind director Gints Zilbalodis has taken the animation world by storm with his beautifully crafted sophomore feature Flow , which has received a multitude of awards and nominations to date, including two nominations for both BAFTA and the Academy Awards.   The mystical world he creates in Flow is in peril. There are traces of human inhabitants, but they are now nowhere to be seen as water begins to flood the landscape. The story begins following a small, solitary cat as the shoreline rises and the home where it once lived is submerged underwater. Forced to flee, he happens upon a refuge boat containing a calm and unperturbed Cabybarre who seems amenable to his presence, and the two begin a journey on the water towards higher ground. Along the way they cross paths with a lemur, obsessed with collecting shiny objects, a boisterous and excitable dog and a stoic, mysterious secretary bird. Together, as they traverse the landscape on their fable-like quest, the ragtag team of animals must learn to trust each other and work together to survive.  Flow pushes the boundaries of animation, immersing audiences in a world before unseen. Join artist Kit Glaisyer at the CORN EXCHANGE, DORCHESTER on November 19, 2023, for an exclusive artist talk about his upcoming exhibition, 'West Dorset Landscapes.' Kit Glaisyer, a renowned Bridport-based artist, has been recognized for his exceptional talent and artistic vision. His recent painting, 'Glowing Orange Eggardon Hill,' was highly commended by Sotheby's Curator Fru Tholstrup at the Marshwood Arts Awards. Kit's artistic journey began in rural north Dorset, where he painted 'plein air' alongside his father, capturing the essence of nature. After winning an Art Scholarship to Sherborne School, he further honed his skills through art trips abroad, exploring prestigious European art museums. Kit's artistic evolution continued in London, where he delved into Abstract painting for five years. In 1998, he relocated to Bridport, finding a fresh muse in the picturesque landscapes of West Dorset. Inspired by artists like John Constable and Claude Monet, Kit's landscape paintings seamlessly merge traditional and contemporary techniques. During the 2020 lockdown, Kit embarked on a remarkable endeavor, capturing the breathtaking views from Eggardon Hill in a series of paintings. From winter storms to misty spring mornings and warm autumn evenings, his work beautifully encapsulates the ever-changing essence of West Dorset's natural beauty. Don't miss this enchanting evening talk as Kit Glaisyer shares the stories behind his art and the captivating journey that has shaped his career.
