Toller Porcorum
Cultural Experiences
The scythe is an effective and enjoyable tool to use, and is low tech, low carbon alternative to machinery. With the appropriate knowledge, you can tackle small meadows, reduce nettles, and manage grassy verges and lawns. Chris Riley is an experienced scythesman and scythe trainer. From hay harvest to reed cutting, Chris has a wide-ranging expertise in the use of the scythe and has appeared as a scything extra in films. He has won awards for 'quality' mowing in competitions and enjoys exploring ways of making one's own 'snath' (the scythe handle) using a variety of materials. Scythe courses are based around lightweight Austrian scythes. Instruction is provided on the three interacting factors that make for successful mowing: How to set up the grips correctly for the user’s proportions How to keep the edge sharp How to mow with a movement that is efficient for the body and effective in cutting the vegetation Throughout the training there are some important safety considerations and safe working is paramount throughout the course. The course programme also includes the following: Introduction to the course Comparison of English and continental scythes Description & parts of a scythe Principles of movement How to effectively hone the edge with a whetstone Adjustment of blade angles, according to mowing circumstances Different blades for different purposes Demonstration of peening (thinning the blade edge by hammering) Maintenance and repair of blades Vegetation management, where appropriate You can also purchase your own Austrian scythe on the day. The grips can then be set up correctly to fit you and you can acquire one or more blades that are appropriate to your intended task. Kit prices start at around £136 (as at Feb. 2024). Please contact Chris beforehand if you are intending to buy: chris@pratensis.net. Price: £80 pp to include all tuition and use of equipment. All money raised helps to support the vital conservation work of Dorset Wildlife Trust, protecting wildlife now and for future generations to come. Times: Arrive at 9.45am for morning tea. The course will start at 10am and finish at 4pm. What to bring: Outdoor footwear, a sun hat and waterproof clothing just in case. The course is based around lightweight Austrian scythes. A set will be provided to each participant, but if you have your own you can bring that. Chris can also supply Austrian scythes. If you have an English scythe you can bring it along for discussion purposes. Terms and Conditions for Participants DWT reserves the right to cancel the course at any time. His ‘nine minutes of one-liners’ on Live at the Apollo has garnered over sixty million views online. He was a regular on Mock the Week and has contributed to numerous TV programs and other comedians. Often regarded as the most quoted comedian in the country, he’s also known for his rather cheeky humor. This is one of a series of exclusive shows he is performing for Shaft Of Wit Comedy, which are also among his last club appearances for a while, as he takes a step back to prepare for his biggest ever tour in 2026 . It could be years before he is up close live and local like this again. Supporting Gary for this show will be .... CARL DONNELLY Carl started performing stand-up in 2005 and quickly established himself as one of the UK’s most exciting comedians. His conversational, silly sense of humour saw him win a host of awards (Chortle Best Newcomer 2007, Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2007 among others) and become a regular at all of the finest comedy clubs in the UK and Ireland. In 2009, Carl performed his debut solo show Relax Everyone, it’s Carl Donnelly! at the Edinburgh Fringe for which he was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. Occasionally he dons his accordion (often as a spiteful repost to hecklers) and performs one of his comedy songs, such as his George Formby parody, described by the Guardian as “a comic tour de force.” Winner of tghe very first Dirty Dozen Live Comedy Shootout, David is a superb stand up. . We will focus on rose, elderflower, edible flowers and other key summer herbs. Maybe some wild strawberries too! Please bring foraging basket or bag. We'll then head to my home for some drinks and snacks and to make some delicious recipes: Solstice Sun tea with various plants and edible flowers Rose salt Elderflower summer vinegar You get to try other summer wildcrafted treats and then take home two wildcrafted recipes to try, and a full handout with recipes. "The Foraging Workshop was a very enjoyable experience. Whilst harvesting seasonal edible and healing plants in the sunny woods and fields, we were given much information by Joanna - who is extremely knowledgeable about wild plants - and I learnt many new things. Joanna is very generous, and when we got back to the house we were given home made Dandelion cookies and herbal teas using the plants we had bet it foraging, as well as making pesto, tonic vinegar, and tasting delicious wild garlic butter. We were also given an epic handout with lots of information and recipes Very good value, and made new friends." My aim is for my workshops to be friendly and inclusive places where all are welcome. If you have mobility or other issues which may impact being able to walk across different terrains for an hour please do get in touch to discuss options. Dogs are very welcome on leads on the walking part of the workshop (90 minutes). Information Source: Joanna Webber, Forager and Ayurvedic herbalist | eventbrite

Chartley Moss Summer walk Come join us for a delightful summer walk at Chartley Moss National Nature Reserve and learn about the plants and animals that make their home in this hostile environment. We also hope to spot some late flying white-faced darter dragonflies by the pools. Directions to the meeting point will be sent with your email ticket. The walk is on predominatelyflat ground, although access to the moss is via a steep zig-zag path down the side of an old railway embankment. The path on the moss is very uneven with tussocky grasses, brambles and is very soft in some areas. There are some areas of log path, which may be slippy and uneven. This event is not suitable for dogs. Information Source: Natural England | eventbrite
