‘City Streets, Scottish Islands and Silhouetted Hills: Bet Low (1924-2007) Art and Life’, Hildegarde Berwick Principal Seminar Room 1, Reid Building, The Glasgow School of Art, 164 Renfrew Street, Glasgow G3 6RQ December 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of Bet Low’s birth. This talk will cover the very eventful 50+ years of Bet Low’s art and life. Bet was born in Gourock and from 1945 Glasgow became her home after completing her studies at Glasgow School of Art. Her long career started initially creating theatre sets for Glasgow Unity Theatre. Always pursuing opportunities to promote her work, and that of other young ambitious artists, she co-founded the New Charing Cross Gallery in 1963 located in Sauchiehall Street. The artist is best known today for her tranquil landscapes of Scottish islands, particularly Orkney. Bet won many awards throughout her career and in 1999 she was awarded the distinction of Doctor of Letters from Glasgow University. Hildegarde Berwick studied History of Fine Art and Psychology at Glasgow University and a post-graduate Diploma at Manchester University. She has held a number of curatorial roles in galleries across Scotland. She has also worked for Scottish charities in a governance role. Hildegarde is now pursuing several research projects, including the life and work of Glasgow based artist, Bet Low. This event is part of the exhibition programme for ‘Bet Low: An island on your doorstep’, Reid Gallery, The Glasgow School of Art (11 January – 8 February 2025). LOWLANDS: round table Principal Seminar Room 1, Reid Building, The Glasgow School of Art, 164 Renfrew Street, Glasgow G3 6RQ Lowlands Artists Collective are a group of eight artists now based in various parts of Scotland and Finland with different artistic practices. They first got to know each other through their affiliation with Glasgow Print Studio. They have also all individually received funding from the Bet Low Trust. Originally set up by Bet Low herself, the Trust awards grants to artists in Scotland to travel, research and develop new work. In 2016 the collective produced the LOWLANDS project - a box set, print exchange and exhibition. The aim of the project was to acknowledge this connection to the Trust and to celebrate the adventurous and inclusive spirit of Bet Low herself. They expanded on this in 2021 with an exhibition at Oxford House, Glasgow, which included Low’s work. Celebrating the exhibition ‘Bet Low: An island on your doorstep’, Lowlands Artists Collective will hold a roundtable discussion. They will show the box set folio of prints and presenting documentation of our exhibition at Oxford House. People can see the box set first-hand before and during the conversation. They will begin by introducing the work they have done as a group, then explore how each has benefited from Low's legacy. Lowlands Artists Collective are Andreas Behn-Eschenburg, Rachel Duckhouse, Claire Forsyth, Alistair Gow, Abigale Neate-Wilson, Bronwen Sleigh, Karen L. Vaughan and Alasdair Wallace. This event is part of the exhibition programme for ‘Bet Low: An island on your doorstep’, Reid Gallery, The Glasgow School of Art (11 January – 8 February 2025). Swords into Ploughshares: Knives into Jewels Exhibition Preview: 4.30pm – 6.30pm Friday 21st February Reid Gallery, Glasgow School of Art, 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow G3 6RQ You are warmly invited to join us for the preview of our new exhibition Swords into Ploughshares: Knives into Jewels. Concern about knife crime and its effect on communities was the catalyst for this exhibition. These new artworks create positive outcomes from what might be thought of as negative materials. This touring exhibition, hosted by GSA School of Design, is curated by Norman Cherry and Dauvit Alexander. The curators invited thirty-five international jewellery and metals artists to create new bodies of work by refashioning, repurposing, adapting or otherwise transforming knives which had been surrendered to UK police. The exhibiting artists have been selected for their excellence of practice and ability to comment on and react to social and personal situations through their work. Jewellery and small objects are ideal vehicles to engage with complex issues, having a personal, portable, talismanic potential. This is not conventional “jewellery as product” as seen on the high street, but “jewellery as art object”. The exhibition shows work with a narrative potential: political and social significance is a major feature of this project. The curators have deliberately chosen a mix of established and emerging artists from an international constituency. Some of the artists expressed interest in participating because they already work with steel (the majority of knives are made from steel) and/or other non-precious materials, some because they relish the opportunity to do so. All of them have committed to the project because they believe in the power of their art to change lives, and wish to be involved because they have a genuine interest in the subject. Exhibiting Artists include Dauvit Alexander, Boris Bally, Petra Bishai, Stephen Bottomley, Tim Carson, Norman Cherry, Jens Clausen, Rachael Colley, Eimear Conyard, Bob Coogan, Rosie Deegan, Jeff Durber, Cristina Filipe, Anna Gordon, Hermann Hermson, Jorge Manilla, Patrick McMillan, Nanna Mellund, Eliana Negroni, Rohan Nicol, Ted Noten, Coilin O’Dubhail, Komelia Okim, Peter Parkinson, Annelisse Pfeifer, Jo Pond, Elizabeth Shaw, Rebecca Skeels, Risto Tali, and Fred Truus. Swords into Ploughshares: Knives into Jewels is a touring exhibition curated by Norman Cherry and Dauvit Alexander. Norman Cherry has an international reputation as a jewellery artist, curator of exhibitions, and writer. A former senior academic in British universities, he has works in public collections such as The British Museum, Dundee Museums, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museums of Scotland and The Mint Museum, North Carolina, USA. He has previously curated touring exhibitions of new narrative jewellery such as “Transplantation” and “The Other Mountain”, both of which showed the work of international jewellers from Germany, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Korea and China to international audiences. Dauvit Alexander is Senior Lecturer at the BCU School of Jewellery He is experienced in delivering socially-engaged projects. His jewellery uses unconventional combinations of materials such as corroded steel and iron with precious metals and gemstones. He has work in public collections, including the British Museum and Goldsmiths’ Hall and has recently co-curated the socially-engaged “{Queer}+{Metals}” exhibition as well as “No Laughing Matter”, an exhibition of work looking at the criminalizing of the use of Nitrous Oxide. CoMA GlasgowxARCO MENCON project | Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Mar 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Renfrew
Arts
MenCon is a radical reinterpretation of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Op.64, wherein the solo part remains completely intact (realised by violinist Chihiro Ono), and the orchestral parts are reinterpreted and recomposed by a chamber orchestra of creative musicians from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, led by composer Neil Luck. The work is chameleonic, unrepeatable, inclusive, unpredictable, creative, brilliantly risky, and probably (possibly) exactly how Mendelssohn himself would have wanted it to be played in the 21st century! Different every time, MenCon was originally realised by Neil’s ensemble ARCO, following a similar experiment with the Beethoven Violin concerto some years earlier. It has also however, been realised by Chihiro and Neil with conservatoire students, improvising orchestras, and other new music ensembles. The piece has also been released as an album by Birmingham Record Company. In this iteration, we will be collaborating with ARCO on a performance of MenCon. The project will involve considerable flexibility, and is not something which is supposed to be over-rehearsed, as such we only ask you to be available for three dates: 11/3/25 (Tuesday), 19:00-21:00 at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland: CoMA will run a workshop introducing some of the ideas behind MenCon, listening and interacting with recordings, and improvising a little together as a group to set up the headspace for the performance, and likely listening to the concerto so we have some idea what to expect. Attendance at this is preferred but not strictly required for participation. Please let us know if you will not be available. 21/3/25 (Friday), 18:00-20:30 at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland: ARCO will join us to properly introduce the project and then prepare and rehearse us a little for the concert. 22/3/25 (Saturday), 14:00-17:15 (rehearsal @ 14:00, doors @ 15:30, performance @ 16:00) at Pianodrome Edinburgh: Concert day. We go to the venue, set up, and perform. For this project we have funding available to cover travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Details will follow. Information Source: CoMA Glasgow | eventbrite

Ready to explore the vibrant world of the Glasgow School of Art? Come join our awesome Student Ambassadors for a wee wander through our Garnethill campus and experience the art school first-hand. Whatever your interest (Design, Fine Art, Architecture, or Innovation & Technology) or your level (Undergraduate or Postgraduate) we are happy to tailor this tour to suit your needs. We will meander through our bustling studios, buzzing workshops and our bountiful library, getting an inside scoop on student life from those who know it best. We’ll also show you around the thriving Garnethill community that is central to our experience. We’ll cap off our journey at Blythswood House (our friendly neighbourhood student accommodation) where you can chat with our friendly neighbourhood accommodation team about what options feel like home. We sell out fast, so grab your spot now! Bring your favourite person along (just one though, we want to give you the care and attention you deserve) and prepare to discover what makes an art school tick. Our tours last approximately 1.5 hours; fair warning, even though our buildings are fully accessible, we are on a large hill, so expect to sweat! Due to limited spaces, we require you book your tickets in advance; if you have any additional requirements or any questions, do give us a call or email us at recruitment@gsa.ac.uk and we will be happy to accommodate you. PS: While our guides may not be experts on all the courses we offer (tons!), they’re very knowledgeable on student life and will be thrilled to share their experience with you. Please note that the tour does not include meetings with academic staff. Information Source: GSA OPEN | eventbrite
