Strong Island Nature Walk Date and Time: Saturday, August 30th @ 9:00am Distance: 1.7 miles Guide: Phil Kyle Join local naturalist Phil Kyle for a walk around the “gem” of Pleasant Bay. Phil will focus on the natural history of the island. CCF Executive Director Lauren Arcomano, who will also be on the walk, will speak to CCF's current conservation efforts in Chatham. Acquired in 1973 from the Horst Family, Strong Island consists of 75 acres of upland owned by CCF and 59 acres of town-owned marsh. Located in Pleasant Bay, the property has both the limitations of isolation from the Cape as a whole and also the likelihood of unique migrational visitations. The island-long trail system winds thought pine and oak woodlands filled with native shrubs and wildlife representative of the general area. Transportation to and from the island will be provided on private boats. Your Guide: Phil Kyle is a Cape Cod naturalist who has served as president of the Cape Cod Bird Club, as a bird columnist for the Cape Cod Times, Head Naturalist for the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, and Interpretive Park Ranger for the Cape Cod National Seashore. He has been the Chatham Bars Inn Staff Naturalist and is currently a Volunteer Field Naturalist for Wellfleet Bay Audubon.Phil has presented to schools, libraries, museums and garden clubs for over 20 years. He has also appeared on WGBH Channel 2's " Staying Overnight in a Lighthouse " , Channel 5's Chronicle, "Winter Birding" and WCAI radio's Science Minutes. He has been birding for over 40 years and taught at Barnstable High School and graduated from Cornell University . Lauren Arcomano is the Executive Director of the Chatham Conservation Foundation and an avid outdoors person who loves to hike and kayak. When not at CCF's historic headquarters in the Mayo House, she can be found paddling in the Nauset Marsh or exploring other conservation lands on the Cape. Special Notes: Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and be prepared with water, sunglasses, and sunblock as needed. The walk will follow trails as well as off-trail beaches. Please Note: Ticket sales are final - no refunds. You will be notified by telephone if the walk must be cancelled because of inclement weather, and your ticket(s) will be fully refunded. Meeting details and directions will be provided upon purchase of tickets. Walk suitable for ages 12 and above. As part of the Estuary Anthology in Estuary Festival 2025, Stephen Turner will share his deep engagement with the River Medway from 1994 to the present day, including installations in Darnet Fort and the Royal Dockyard Church in Chatham . He will reflect on a major project to trace the Millennial Tide in 1999-2000 with 110 adults and the 3,000 children of every primary school in Medway, who each made a clay boat from Medway clay. Huge canvas sheets were fastened to the riverbed at eleven different locations and later exhibited in the windows of the Royal Dockyard Church like muddy stained glass. A sound track of the entire 12 hours between the tides was recorded near the Queens Stairs in the Dockyard. In the studio you will be able to hear the artist speak, listen to Millennium sound highlights, handle objects recovered from the river bed (including Roman pottery) and view a display of Turner's river artworks from the last 30 years. The 12th annual Kent Arts Conference is scheduled for July 16-18, 2025. Art to Be What does the future hold for the arts? In a rapidly evolving world shaped by technological innovation, societal shifts, and global challenges, artists, creatives, and cultural leaders must gaze into the “futurescape” and envision new modes of artistic expression, audience engagement, and creative impact. The conference theme invites participants to explore the possibilities and potential of the arts in shaping the world to come, and vice versa. Spanning diverse disciplines – including visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, new media, and interdisciplinary practices – this conference provides a platform to share pioneering ideas, unveil groundbreaking works, and collectively reimagine the future of creative expression. Potential areas of focus may include (but are not limited to): Envisioning new artistic forms, mediums, and genres enabled by emerging technologies Exploring how the arts moving forward might address pressing social, environmental, and humanitarian issues Developing innovative audience engagement strategies and immersive experiences Cultivating the creative workforce of tomorrow through dynamic arts education Investigating the intersection of art, science, and technology to generate novel solutions Looking at how AI will be applied to creating art moving forward and how that might redefine ‘art’ as we know it Empowering marginalized communities through equitable and inclusive artistic practices Rethinking art, cultural institutions, arts funding, and distribution models for the future Imagining how the arts can inspire hope, and shape a better world We welcome proposals that challenge conventional thinking, showcase visionary projects, and spark lively discussions about the transformative potential of the arts. Whether you are an established artist, a rising creative, an arts administrator, an educator, or a passionate advocate, we invite you to join us in charting the “futurescape” of artistic expression. Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild. our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time. Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session . At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of our wild products and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end. Who Is This Workshop For? These events are perfect for everyone - families, bushcrafters and dog-walkers alike! Nobody is made to feel out of their depth or silly for not knowing what certain things are, so these events suit absolute novices to more experienced hobby foragers alike. We strongly believe that foraging is for everyone , with all demographics welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or ethnicity. Please read our FAQs further down the page to find out about dogs, children and mobility. IMPORTANT INFORMATION KIT LIST: What to bring with you Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the destination. EXACT MEETING POINT: On the grass at the southern end of the main car park (not the one with the cafe) Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MWrthHiqQC86H5jY9 What3Words: https://w3w.co/alongside.married.rebel PARKING: There is plenty of parking at the venue but it may be subject to pay & display fees. TOILETS: Toilets are available at this venue but will require you walking 5-10 minutes from the meeting point. Please arrive well in time for the start of the workshop, allowing extra time for the distance from your parked car to the meeting point and any toilet trips - we don't tend to wait for late-comers! Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. If you cannot find your tutor around that time, there is a chance you are looking in the wrong place, so please check the event information for the exact location (not the postcode) Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket! Minimum number of guests for this event to go ahead: 8 people PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide guests with a contact telephone number for your tutor. This is for privacy puropses but also because it is impractical to do so - your tutor simply wouldn't be able to take a call whilst with a group. If you need to get in contact, please use the email function via eventbrite or our website . Start getting excited!
