Whether you're a beginner or an experienced naturalist, this event offers a great opportunity to share knowledge, build confidence in biological recording, and refine your identification skills — all with guidance from beetle specialist Wil J. Heeney. What will the day involve? Hands-on experience using different methods to collect and record a variety of beetle families. Practical training in specimen collection and preservation. Guidance on identifying beetles in the field and understanding which specimens require further examination under a microscope. A chance to connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds who share an interest in entomology and wildlife recording. What do I need to know in advance? This event is aimed at adults only. It’s free to attend and beetle recorders of all abilities are welcome, but booking is essential. Identification will take place in the field whenever possible, but some invertebrate specimens may need to be collected and preserved for accurate identification. We'll be outside for the whole day so please bring suitable clothing for all types of weather and please bring your lunch and any snacks you will require with you on the day. Recording London's Wildlife All records collected will be added to the LNHS iRecord activity in order to share our findings with the site managers, Greenspace Information for Greater London (GiGL), London Natural History Society (LNHS) and relevant national recording schemes and societies. Beetle Specialist: Wil J. Heeney Wil J. Heeney is the National Recorder for Longhorn Beetles in the UK and runs the National Longhorn Beetle Recording Scheme. Wil works as a Consultant Entomologist through his business, Flauna Ecology, and also volunteers as Conservation Officer for the Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland (ColSoc). Hogsmill Valley The Hogsmill Valley is a cluster of local nature reserves along The Hogsmill river, comprising of Rose Walk, Elmbridge Open Space, Hogsmill wood, Southwood Open Space and Six Acre Meadow. This event is delivered by the Biological Recording Company in partnership with Kingston Council and aims to continue previous biological recording efforts across the Hogsmill Valley reserves. About St. Matthew's C of E Primary School St. Matthew's C of E Primary School is a 400-pupil church school. They started their OPAL journey in the summer of 2022 and achieved their platinum award in autumn 2023. Their play offer is outstanding, ensuring every child has a fantastic playtime every single day. The school has a large loose parts shed, a huge sandpit, a double decker bus and a meadow where children can explore the natural environment every day. The play team supports the children's risky, adventurous, and creative play. Come along for our next informal Chamber netwalking event, starting at Tolworth Court Farm Fields and following the scenic route alongside the Hogsmill River to Ewell Court Park. We’ll be walking, talking, and networking - it is a slightly longer walk ( 4 miles) but don’t worry, no hiking experience is required! The route takes us through a variety of landscapes, beginning at Tolworth Court Farm, one of London’s premier nature reserves, followed by the riverbank into the picturesque Ewell Court Park, where we’ll pause for a coffee break. The Breech Birth Training Breech Birth Network provides training to over 2000 health care professionals every year, throughout the UK and internationally. Our Physiological Breech Birth training is underpinned by the largest evidence base underpinning any available breech training programme. This includes research into: the normal parameters of progress and mechanisms of breech births; standards for professionals who attend planned breech births; the principles underpinning a physiological approach; and how professionals learn breech skills; and significant changes in confidence, knowledge and clinical behaviour following training. The training day covers: 9.00 Sign-in & Registration 9.30 How do we develop breech expertise from the ground up? 10.30 ‘Normal for breech’ : Understanding the mechanisms is the key to safety 11.30 Morning Break 11.45 Evidence and guideline update 12.15 Recognising and assisting complications (Part 1) 1.00 Lunch 2.00 Recognising and assisting complications (Part 2) 4.30 Questions, Feedback & Finish Following completion of the training day, attendees will have free access to our online training. The training day will be run by Emma Spilane. Emma is a midwife working in the NHS for over 15 years. Qualifying as a midwife in 2011 she worked at Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford completing her preceptorship and having her first introduction to breech birth. In 2012 she moved to St George's NHS Foundation Trust, London to gain more experience in complex maternity care. Here she worked in all areas of midwifery but keeping physiological birth at the core of her practice. She worked as a labour ward coordinator and following this in 2015 she became the Lead Midwife for the Birth Centre. It was around this time Emma attended Dr Shawn Walkers Physiological Breech Birth Training Day recognising a need for further training in this area and underpinning her interest and passion in supporting women's choice. Following attendance at the training Emma began working with Shawn supporting her training and beginning to teach herself with Breech Birth Network. In 2017 she became the Training Coordinator for Breech Birth Network, CIC and set up a breech birth service at St George's Hospital. I n 2020 Emma joined Kingston NHS Foundation Trust as the Consultant Midwife. As part of her role she developed a breech birth service which is now a well established service within Kingston Maternity. Emma is now the Deputy Director of Midwifery at Kingston Hospital but still leads the breech service regularly counselling women and birthing people as well as going on-call supporting mothers in their choice to have a vaginal breech birth. Emma also continues to deliver training and supports her team to develop their own breech skills and deliver training through in house and external training days. A chance to connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds who share an interest in entomology and wildlife recording. What do I need to know in advance? This event is aimed at adults only. Attendance is free, but booking is essential as spaces are limited. Fly recorders of all abilities are welcome, but booking is essential. Identification will take place in the field whenever possible, but some invertebrate specimens may need to be collected and preserved for accurate identification. As a volunteer Martin runs the national Soldierflies and Allies Recording Scheme, and is County Moth Recorder for Berkshire vice-county. T olworth Court Farm Nature Reserve At over 50 ha, the large size and location of this urban nature reserve along the chalk stream of the Hogsmill River in Kingston mean it is an important place for nature. A haven for Brown Hairstreak and other butterfly species, the Wild Tolworth project aims to improve the quality of the site for wildlife. Following a range of invertebrate-focused events with the FSC BioLinks project, we’re revisiting the site to record the wildlife and update the species list for the site.
