Identifying the victims of the 1935 Moffat murders was a complex task, only made possible with the help of Scotland’s leading specialists. While challenging, it led to major advances in forensics. On Sunday 29 September 1935, two women take a morning walk just outside of the small town of Moffat, and make a grisly discovery: small, wrapped packages containing the remains of two unknown people. This triggers a several month-long investigation to uncover who the victims were and how they met their untimely fate. How did investigators recover the missing identities of these victims – and how would things be different if they had access to modern forensic techniques? A panel of forensic experts, historians, and legal representatives will review the case at this event and answer your questions. Whether you're interested in true crime, history, or intrigued by the fusion of science and justice, this panel promises riveting discussions and thought-provoking insights. The latest series of Inside Forensic Science podcast covers this story in greater depth. Please note that this event is for ages 16+ and will feature graphic content including descriptions of body parts, decomposition, and potential discussion of domestic abuse. Can't attend in-person? During the Second World War, bombing caused extensive civilian casualties, not only in enemy territory, but also in the occupied friendly nations and colonies. But how did the Allied nations that dropped these bombs justify the deaths? Were they regarded as ‘collateral damage’ in the face of war? In France alone, over 57,000 civilians died because of air raids from allies. Meanwhile, in French Indochina, bombing contributed to the famine of 1945, which claimed up to two million lives. This talk examines how Allied leaders and airmen rationalised such actions. It explores the ethical dilemmas faced by political and military decision-makers, the civilian response, and the moral struggles of those involved, including the French pilots ordered to bomb their own homeland. Drawing on unpublished archival documents and firsthand testimonies, this talk sheds light on how the Allies differentiated between enemy and friendly civilians – and between European and colonial populations. In doing so, it proposes a new understanding of the significance of ethical choices in times of war. Important points to note This event is suitable for age 16+ Please note that Curious events taking place in ‘The Studio’ are only wheelchair accessible via a smaller lift. The lift’s door has a width of 69cm and the lift has a depth of 104cm. Accessible toilet facilities for activities taking place in this space are also accessed by the smaller lift. Most of us are constantly bombarded with undifferentiated noise and visual stimulii which looking - truly seeing - by drawing and reflecting, acts as a powerful antidote to this and opens us up to the possibility of creating "an island of silence" in which we are able to restore ourselves, returning to our senses. Allow yourself to be gently guided by artist, Brigid Collins, as you spend time drawing, reflecting and immersing yourself in the quietude of Dr. Neil's Garden. To stop rushing around, to sit quietly, to notice your surroundings, to simply see the world, promises to be an unforgettable experience. As artist Frederick Franck noticed, "the eye releases, the heart expands and curiosity is dissolved in wonder." No previous drawing experience is expected or required. All that you will need to bring is an open mind. Spending time in the garden in this way will do the rest... Artist photo by David R. Moss Other photos by kind permission. Artwork by Lydia Nixon. Origin Pain is an annual ultramarathon around Edinburgh which raises awareness and funds for the mental health crisis within one of society’s most vulnerable demographic, 16 – 18 year olds. After losing his best friend to suicide during his late teens, Smls founder Danny Allan, spent years searching for a way to leave a legacy for his friend, Charlie. This legacy is PAIN – an ultramarathon which takes on three loops covering the entirety of Edinburgh. The first two loops total 100km, while the final loop increases by 1km each year, to reflect the age which Charlie would have been. The last 33km are dedicated to Charlie but the first 100km are for everyone else struggling with their mental battle. Loop 3, Charlie’s loop is a run where the community are encouraged to join in, a run which has been tackled in Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Capetown on the same day over the last two years. Since its inception in 2023, PAIN has raised over £12,000. For the second year the funds raised will go to Smls' new pathway which provides free therapy sessions for 16 – 18 year olds within Edinburgh who are currently stuck on waiting lists. PAIN 131, PAIN 132, and now PAIN 133. PAIN 133 14.09.2025. We’re back. Similar to last year, PAIN 133 will be a team relay. However, this year the event is open to all and there’s no need to be part of a run club to enter. Each team needs to have three runners – one per loop – who are keen to compete in, and take on, a unique challenge while raising funds for a great cause. Team entry is £150 per group of three which goes directly towards free mental health therapy for 16 - 18 year olds. The day will start and end at Newbarns Taproom – where the community will come together for an afterparty to celebrate the day and enjoy some local food and drink, more to follow. Entries will be capped to ensure we can create a smooth and enjoyable experience for athletes. The Loops Right, time for some details. Here’s the structure of the day: Loop 1 [52 KM] : Our first runners kick-off at 07:15 as one group – with runners expected to stick together at a group pace of ~ 5:40min/km. At 32km, runners will hit their aid station. At this stage, if people fancy a bit of light hearted competition, then athletes are welcomed to run whatever pace they like back to the meet point. Loop 2 [48 KM] : Our second runners start at 07:30. As above, the group will stick together at a pace of 5:40min/km before they reach their aid station at 30km. Thereafter, athletes can pick up (or slow down!) the pace as they wish. Charlies Loop [33km] : Charlie’s loop can be started by the third team runner as soon as both runners 1 and 2 are back to the start. There’s no pace restriction on Charlie’s Loop. PAIN 133 is not a race. That said, we won’t deprive those who want it a bit of light hearted competition. Information Source: Smalls | eventbrite

How do we best visualise data? And what ethical questions arise – especially when it’s our own personal data? Every day, we generate vast amounts of data – from social media and fitness trackers to bank transactions and health records. Data visualisation helps us make sense of this information, revealing patterns, stories and insights that might otherwise go unnoticed. In this hands-on, interactive workshop, you’ll explore innovative and creative ways to visualise data – from sketching to Lego. You’ll gain a fresh perspective on the power and potential of personal data, as well as the ethical considerations that come with it. Along the way, you’ll learn about cutting-edge data science and visualisation research happening right here in Scotland. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a data enthusiast, this session invites you to think critically and ethically about the data that shapes our lives. This event is an interactive workshop so may involve talking in groups, hands-on activities, small individual or group tasks and self-reflection. We are delighted to be welcoming Scottish author and storyteller, J anis Mackay , to the shop on Tuesday 16 th September at 7pm , as we celebrate the publication of her captivating modern gothic love story steeped in Celtic mythology, On a Northern Shore . Set against the stark beauty of Scotland’s far north during Hogmanay, the narrative begins with lobster fisherman Rob Sinclair making a poignant offering to the sea spirit, the Selkie. That same night, the arrival of Mairi, a mysterious newcomer charged with a mission of vengeance from beyond the grave, disrupts the village’s quiet existence. As Rob and Mairi are irresistibly drawn to one another, the lines between love and revenge blur, revealing a tangled web of secrets and shifting identities. This enthralling tale will appeal to readers of literary fiction, fans of gothic romance, those intrigued by folklore and mythology, and anyone visiting the Highlands and Islands of Scotland – especially the North Coast 500. Perfect for book clubs and individuals seeking a rich, atmospheric read, On a Northern Shore promises to enchant readers of all ages, making it a compelling addition to any bookshelf. Janis Mackay is a Scottish author and storyteller residing in Portobello, Edinburgh. Born in the heart of the city, Janis’s adventurous spirit led her to live in diverse places, including France, Palestine, Greece and the far north of Scotland. Although she trained as a journalist on Fleet Street, she soon realised her true passion lay in creative writing. After years of exploring the world, Janis returned to Scotland. She honed her storytelling skills as a drama teacher and voice coach, which enriched her writing journey. Her breakthrough came with her debut novel, Magnus Fin and the Ocean Quest , which won the Kelpies Prize in 2009. Janis’s love for language and storytelling stems from her childhood. She is pursuing a PhD that explores the intersection of self-reflective creative writing and mythology while continuing to write and engage with readers through her novels. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat.
