FREE CHOIR CONCERT BY THE HAMILTON UNI.SINGERS & THE EDINBURGH UNI.SINGERS | Parish Church of St Cuthbert's
Mar 21, 2025 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
Join us in this historic church of Edinburgh , which existence date back from 1100 when St Cuthbert’s was a country kirk. Einburgh was clustered on the ridge which runs eastwards from the Castle. All along the foot of the northern slope of the Castle rock was a morass or marsh and from there northwards it was all countryside until one came to Newhaven and Leith on the coast. The Kirk below the Castle of Edinburgh has a claim to great, but imprecise, antiquity. The Hamilton College Choir brings their spring program Guiding Stars to Ireland and Scotland in March, 2024. Under the baton of Dr. Charlotte Botha, the choir explores Irish, Scottish, and North American choral and folk selections inspired by our relationship with the stars: navigation, discovery, awe, and the courage to embark on new adventures. Composers include Amy Beach, Mason Bynes, Rhona Clarke, Reena Esmail, James MacMillan, Charles Villiers Stanford, and Eric Whitacre.
The 52 singers of the Hamilton College Choir are ambassadors for one of North America’s first liberal arts colleges.
The Hamilton College choral program welcomes singers from all concentrations and vocal backgrounds, and builds on a long-standing tradition of music excellence, community, and life-long friendships. The flagship ensemble, Hamilton College Choir is committed to serving communities on and off campus through repertoire that embraces tradition, innovation, and inclusivity. The group tours annually during the spring recess, undertaking an international tour every four years. Recent tour destinations include Chicago, Boston, Montreal, Asheville, and now the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Dr. Charlotte Botha serves as director of Choral Activities and assistant professor of music at Hamilton College, where she conducts the Hamilton Voices and the College Choir, and teaches courses in music theory and cultural musicology. Her research interests include foreign-language choral diction, multimedia choral performance, and equitable practices for including the music of and by marginalized communities in choral programs.
Botha’s recent guest conducting invitations include the Twin Ports Choral Project (Minn.), the University of Johannesburg, Ball State University (Ind.), and All-State choirs in Alabama, Missouri, and Texas. Her Choral Ubuntu and Nguni diction research was recently featured at the NY-ACDA, Westminster Choir College, and Chorus America conferences. Botha holds a DMA from The University of North Texas, an MMus from Nelson Mandela University, and a BMus from the University of Pretoria. As an ardent collaborator, she believes in the power of music to deepen understanding and respect between people. Founded in 1945, the Edinburgh University Singers were conducted by John Kitchen from 1988 until summer 2018 when Calum Robertson took over this role; he is only their fifth conductor in over 70 years. The choir performs a wide range of sacred and secular music: unaccompanied repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day, works with organ and orchestra, folk-song and Scottish song arrangements, and new commissions. As well as singing in Edinburgh and further afield in Scotland, the choir has visited Austria, Holland, Germany, Prague, France, Belgium, Norway, Poland, and various Italian cities such as Rome, Venice and Verona. The choir sings regularly at University ceremonies such as graduations, and on other important occasions in the McEwan Hall and in Old College. In January 2020 the choir celebrated its 75th anniversary. Calum Robertson is an Edinburgh-based clarinettist, organist and choral conductor. He is a Live Music Now Scotland artist and graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He freelances with various orchestras including The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic. Calum is a member of the wind quintet Sirocco Winds and soprano and clarinet duo with Sally Carr. As organist Calum is Assistant Director of Music at Old Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church and director of The Edinburgh University Singers since 2018. Calum has commissioned and premiered works including “Kneeling” by Claire McCue, “Un Petit Psaultier” by Sheena Phillips and “Recollections” by John Hearne.
