'The world isn't in your books and maps, it's out there' - J.R.R. Tolkien Whether you're a road runner, trail runner or hillwalker, if you want to try running in the mountain environment, then this is the Girls on Hills event for you! A full day of guided trail running in the Lake District National Park with experienced, local guides who will give you advice on how to make your transition safely. We'll cover basic navigation, kit, training, nutrition, technique and mountain safety for running in the highland environment. Sample stunning, classic Lakeland trails with professional running guides from Girls on Hills. Routes will depend on the weather we experience but all runners will enjoy the wildness and rugged beauty of the Cumbrian fells, as we take the 'trail less travelled' through breathtaking mountain scenery. If you're a beginner, don't worry, you don't have to run the whole time (we do plenty of walking, chatting and stopping to soak up the views)! Hit the Trail is a relaxed and sociable day out with a distance of 8-12km, designed to set you up for your trail running journey. It is a supportive 'safe space' for women and not a boot-camp - our focus is place not pace! To find out more about what's involved visit: www.girlsonhills.com/faqs TICKET COST Hit the Trail is one of Girls on Hills' fully-funded 'Access Courses' and as such is perfect for those who feel impacted by barriers to participation. This event is open to women who are eligible via our Access Fund criteria. Tickets are allocated in good faith. We aim to help as many women as possible experience the many health and wellbeing benefits that come with trail running. Due to the high-levels of cancellation that we experienced (at short notice) in 2024, this year we are charging a £50.00 fully refundable deposit per ticket (i.e. the full ticket fee will be automatically refunded after attending the event). This is to encourage participants to cancel their ticket in advance if unable to attend, so that we can make the space/s available to others who might need them, and avoid wasting precious Access Fund budget. Can't afford it? We recognise that some people face financial barriers to attending remotely located events like these. If this is you, then we have 3 x no-fee tickets available. To request one of these tickets, please drop us an email at info@girlsonhills.com (note - we do not expect you to 'justify' your application, just simply state your need). LOGISTICS This event does not include any food or accommodation, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own if required, to suit travel logistics or budget. We will also encourage lift-sharing whilst in the area, to reduce environmental impact and pressure on popular rural parking areas. This event can be accessed by public transport and the meet point will be walking distance from a bus stop. Once booked, we will email you at the beginning of the event week to confirm final details. This email will also include a kit list, travel options and advice on where to park. We will meet up to check kit and discuss final plans over coffee before we start! Please only book a space with us if you're reasonably confident you will be able to attend (we do of course understand that sometimes life just gets in the way!) This event is financed by our Access Fund crowdfunding campaign. Your understanding and support is very much appreciated. We pride ourselves on being 'approachable and relatable' so please do get in touch with any concerns or queries you might have now or nearer to the event. If you are concerned about clothing/kit, please email us (we may be able to lend some items). We look forward to having some fun and showing you some great trail running in the Lake District! Mark studied the violin in London, England, at the Royal Academy of Music, and in Freiburg, Germany at the Musikhochschule. After a career in Europe as a violinist, teacher, conductor and concert organizer, Mark completed his PhD in music education at the University of Toronto in 2009. A published researcher, he has presented at conferences around the world on the question of musical meaning. In 2014 he gave a TED Talk at Guelph University entitled Music: Is it just a matter of personal taste? In 2018 he conducted a research project, funded by Humber College, which included a series of podcasts called The Music Listening Project. In the series, which is regularly updated, Mark explores what is going on in music from a practical (rather than theoretical) listening perspective. Mark continues to play the violin professionally. He is currently concertmaster of Toronto’s Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra. Other musical engagements are varied, ranging from solo Bach in Humber's Arboretum, Quartets in Cafes, Piazzola on YouTube, to improvisation and the folk music of Bosnia. Music Concerts
In commemoration of Charles Villiers Stanford's 100th anniversary of his death in 2024, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's 150th anniversary in 2025, join Apocryphonia as we take you on a journey through their songs of lovers, fighters, and drunks at the pub. The concert's highlight is the Canadian Premiere of Stanford's 'Phaudrig Crohoore', an epic choral ballad written by the great poet Sheridan LeFanu about a 6 foot tall tough Irishman whose love was stolen by his rival. Rounding out the concert are choruses from Ralph Vaughan Williams' Shakespearean opera 'Sir John in Love', and some naughty works by Henry Purcell! Oh! Phaudrig Crohoore was the broth of a boy An’ he stood six foot eight; An' his arm was as round as another man's thigh - ‘Tis Phaudrig was great An' his hair was as black as the shadows of night An' hung over the scars left by many a fight; An' his voice, like the thunder, was deep, strong, and loud An' his eye like the lightning from under the cloud An' all the girls liked him, for he could spake civil An' sweet when he liked it, for he was the divil An' there wasn't a girl from thirty-five under Divil a matter how cross, but he could get round her Apocryphonia goes beyond the known and the popular in classical music to reveal the beautiful, the lost, and the rare. The name is derived from the two words: Apocryphus:'secret, or non-canonical', from the Greek adjective ἀπόκρυφος (apokryphos), 'obscure'. The word apocrypha originally meant a text too sacred and secret to be in everyone's hands. -phone: from Ancient Greek φωνή (phōnḗ) 'sound' Apocryphonia's aim is to seek out and share the hidden and the obscure; whether it be music from composers you may never have heard of, or rare works by well known names. Apocryphonia’s founder, Alexander Cappellazzo always felt as though the classical music that inspired him to become a musician was not the classical music that was regularly being performed and taught. Apocryphonia brings local musicians and audiences together and gives them the opportunity to hear and perform works that are rarely performed in ways that highlight their unique qualities; introducing a new favourite piece, or new favourite composer. In a generally orthodox atmosphere of concert programmation, Apocryphonia shows may be the only time you’ll get to hear some of these pieces live in concert!
