What if the strongest shape in the world… isn’t a square? In this hands-on architecture and design workshop, students aged 12–14 explore the bold ideas of Buckminster Fuller—an innovator who believed that triangles, not rectangles, were nature’s true building blocks. Students will investigate how geometry shapes the world around us, from honeycombs to domes to molecules. They’ll learn why the tetrahedron—a three-sided pyramid—is stronger than it looks, and how geodesic structures use simple shapes to create lightweight, stable forms. Along the way, they’ll experiment with different methods of making using art straws, cocktail sticks, polystyrene balls, and modular origami. The workshop combines individual thinking and collaborative teamwork, with plenty of discussion, drawing, and building. A final challenge lets students test their ideas using cocktail sticks and marshmallows to build a dome structure of their own design. “Build Like Bucky” stretches spatial awareness, creativity, and engineering intuition in a fun, engaging setting. It links geometry and design to real-world ideas—and encourages young people to reimagine how we think about space, strength, and structure. Philip Wells is a Chartered Architect and founder of a RIBA-accredited architectural practice, with a passion for creative learning and education outreach. Since 2014, he has delivered architecture-based workshops in schools across Central and SW London and is an active RIBA Architectural Ambassador. His past work includes serving as Lead Architect on the award winning Halley VI Antarctic Research Station (Hugh Broughton Architects) and contributing to the Millennium Bridge in London at Foster + Partners. Philip specialises in using architecturaldesign to unlock creative thinking in young people through hands-on, curriculum-connected experiences. This workshop is strictly for ages 12-14 only. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. Students will explore the difference between acids and alkalis and how they react to form a salt. Using this knowledge they then make their own personalised bath bombs. The workshop also allows students to discover the properties of oils and waxes and how they are able to dissolve into one another, which they use to create their own lip balms. This workshop is a great introduction to pH, neutralisation, solubility and changes. This workshop is strictly for 7-8 year-olds and will include a 30 minute supervised lunch break. Students should bring lunch and a drink. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. This workshop looks closely at the evolutionary arms race between bacteria and the host immune system and how different strains of bacterial species evolve over time. In this workshop, students investigate four fictional bacterial outbreaks by performing restriction enzyme digests on DNA samples isolated from each of the scenes. Using gel electrophoresis, they will then compare the banding patterns to reference samples of known strains. Students will then decide what advice to give their colleagues at the scene of the outbreaks or whether the samples need further investigation. This workshop is strictly for 15–18 year-olds and will include a 30 minute lunch break, during which students will be allowed to leave the Ri building. Students should bring lunch and a drink. We reserve the right to refund or deny entry to those who are not in this age range. Please note that closed toe shoes must be worn as this workshop takes place in our lab. What if you could measure gravity using just a toy car and a ramp? In this hands-on physics workshop, teens will derive the "suvat" equations from first principles—exploring how displacement, velocity, acceleration, and time are linked in motion. Once the maths is mastered, it’s time to hit the track: participants will set up a simple experiment with an accelerating toy car on a ramp, recording times and distances to gather real data. Using their equations and results, they’ll calculate the acceleration due to gravity (g) and see how close they can get to the real value of 9.8 m/s². This workshop is strictly for ages 15–18 only. In this workshop students will discover what a colour actually is, understand how objects become coloured, and how chemists can manipulate these aspects to produce dyes and pigments. The session will begin with a brief overview of light and colour mixing. This leads on to a discussion of how colour arises through removal of specific wavelengths of light, and both additive and subtractive colour mixing. The students then discover how chemical bonding can lead to colour, and they produce both natural and synthetic dyes. The final part of the workshop pitches the students against a ‘real-life’ analytical chemistry scenario during which they will devise their own experiment using aspects of concentration, pH and colourimetry to solve a colourful problem. This workshop is strictly for 15–18 year-olds and will include a 30 minute lunch break, during which students will be allowed to leave the Ri building. Students should bring lunch and a drink. Whether you're full of ideas but don't know where to start, or you have stage fright and need a confidence boost, this workshop is designed to help you get from aspiration to action! Hi, I’m Clare Roberts-Molloy, and I LOVE public speaking. In fact, my family jokes that I should never be allowed near a microphone because I enjoy it so much! But it wasn’t always that way. In my teens and early twenties, the idea of speaking in front of people made me physically ill. Fast forward to today, and I’m comfortable speaking on stage, even with no preparation! So where does that confidence come from? Through lots of practice, expanding my comfort zone, and support along the way, I transformed my fear into a passion. Over the past six years, I’ve guided more than 60 speakers to stand on a TEDx stage. Now, I’m excited to share my knowledge and help others achieve their dream of becoming TEDx speakers! In this one-day workshop, you’ll learn everything you need to know about TEDx, from shaping your talk to applying for an event and stepping confidently onto the stage. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced speaker, this workshop is designed to meet you where you are and help you take that next step. Here’s what you’ll gain from attending: Insight into the expectations and requirements of a TEDx event. Guidance on shaping and refining your "Idea Worth Spreading." Support in crafting the first draft of your talk. A strategy for applying to TEDx events that suits you. Practical tips to build your confidence and feel at ease on stage. Tools to help you deliver a powerful and memorable talk. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to bring your TEDx dream to life!! Ticket Price includes: Light Lunch Refreshments Workshop Materials Free Onsite Parking Disclaimer: Attending this event in no way gurantees a place on the TEDxWolverhampton stage. This is a separate workshop and while examples and experience may be drawn from TEDxWolverhampton, this event is in no way affiliated.
