The SIA have some very basic restraint techniques that come as part of their training, however these were not good enough to deal with the problems he would face on sites and on the door. Steve started to look for a self defence system that he could incorporate with his previous training which he could really rely on. His searching unfolded several systems that looked very flash but again would not be any good with a noncompliant attacker. It was then he found Krav Maga. After researching further into this system he realised although it looked very good it was still lacking something and a lot of the clubs looked like a boxer-size class. Finally he found a teacher nearby that was trained in several martial arts and had brought the traditional Krav Maga to the 20th Century by incorporating his martial arts into a new system called Cross Krav Maga. Steve studied and went through the system to become a Level 2 CKM Coach. With his coaching experience he became an instructor in several other systems such as CCW ( Combat Clinch Work) and UK Urban Kombat. Steve Graduated and passed the Black belt test and was awarded Black Belt on 6TH February 2022 after 8 years of training ! Today he runs his own classes in Haywards Heath & Brighton and is an advanced assistant coach at Crawley.

As a Channel Swimmer he has swam Lake Zurich (26.5km, 7hrs), Round Jersey (51km 9hrs 52mins current assisted) and The English Channel (33km,12 hours 17mins: although when he swam it the conditions made him swim 50km). He is a proud member of the Force 6 Club, reserved for swimmers who have faced Force 6 winds on their Channel crossing. He is also the host of Open Water Swimmers Podcast and is an actor appearing most recently in Eastenders. --------------- Telle works for the Operations Team at SwimTrek HQ. She deals with the recruitment, training and ongoing support of their guiding team and she still get to guide and teach swimming from time to time too. Her longest swims to date are Round Jersey Solo ~51km,tide-assisted (August 2024); North Channel Solo - 34km (July 2024); Vidosternsimmet - 21km (2019), Lake Zurich - 26km (2019), English Channel Solo - 34km (2013), and Windermere - 16km (2012). --------------- Hildi After over decade of embracing the pub and sofa, Hildi returned to her childhood sport of swimming in her thirties. Not content to be average in one sport, she took up triathlon where she found her strength lay in simply never giving up. She completed six Ironman triathlons before hanging up her bike and run shoes to concentrate on long distance swimming. Not keen on rivers and lakes, she was drawn straight to the English Channel. Prior to her solo success in 2024, she swam three successful English Channel relays and has coached other swimmers to successful relay crossings. Hildi is an ex-headteacher who now works as a lifeguard and swimming coach. She has never been happier. --------------- Jo She has always loved being in and around water and cannot remember ever not being able to swim. She has never been a sporty person and for many years just enjoyed swimming lengths in my local pool to keep active. In 2016 she accompanied a friend to the Pool to Pier course and that is where her interest in open-water swimming began. Her first big event was the Dart 10K in 2017 and at the end of that swim she felt she could have kept swimming for longer and the thought of swimming the English Channel began. She has always said she would rather swim the channel than run a marathon! So, training began and she completed many swims including swimming back from the wind farm in 2019, Thames Marathon, Dart 10K 3 times. In 2021 she swam solo from England to France. Since then she has swum the length of Loch Ness (the 26th person in skins), completed 3 ice miles and a few other events. Weather in 2024 prevented her from swimming the North Channel so is hoping to get a chance in 2025.
Her day job is working as a consultant clinical oncologist and at the medical school. Swimming helps her switch off. She enjoys dipping and swimming in the sea at all times of the year with friends and can often be found in the pool at sealanes. --------------- Meet the Host Sam is an entrepreneur that wears many different hats. The Co-Founder of County Business Clubs, a Podcast Host, Radio Show Host, Managing Director SBT and Owner of FirmBalls. Sam has been running his own businesses for more than a decade and is an entrepreneurial thinker with a strong belief that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. He is looking forward to talking with the amazing panel about their Why? for swimming the channel, their mindset to take on such an epic challenge, discuss the tough parts of the process from training to the actual swim, how they overcome those challenges and how they felt on completing the channel?

Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop
Dec 4, 2024 (UTC+0)
Brighton
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to work on your work in progress. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £5 and include a hot or cold drink. You can buy other drinks to keep you going during the morning. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop manager Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin invovled and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry.

Akila’s artistic year-long residency at Brighton Dome in 2021 led to the development of The Rest Experience offering a range of participatory activities, events, collaborations and programmes. As a socially engaged artist her belief is that rest is a collective experience which leads us to our purpose and true self, where we are rested and relevant , connected and visionary and the impossible becomes possible, here and for futurity. Akila is a proud member of the Inscribe Group an imprint of Peepal Tree Press whose support and encouragement have also led to her first novel writing. Her poems and stories speak to our humanness, of complex lives and ultimately the deep joy of liberation. https://akilarichards.wordpress.com/ Writing Our Legacy CIC is an arts and heritage organisation that enables Black, Asian and ethnically diverse/BPOC* people to tell their story through writing and the creative arts. We were established in 2012. We give writers and other creatives a platform and community to feel supported, nurtured and evolve their work through the creative pipeline, from start to publication. We share stories and heritage of diaspora communities and bring them to life through various art forms for audiences to learn and take part in cultural heritage. We are an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. *BPOC stands for ‘Black people, People of Colour’ and is a self-identifying term. While we use the term BPOC, we acknowledge the limitations of this terminology. At the core of our network is the aim to address and overcome systemic barriers that our members face directly or indirectly based on their ethnic or national identities, race or perceived racial identities, or the colour of their skin as per the Equality Act of 2010. This includes people who identify as Black, brown, people of colour, Global Majority, mixed-race, multiple heritage and/or are from the Global South, and/or are East and South-East Asian, West Asian, Asian, Middle Eastern, African, African-Caribbean, Caribbean, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, or First Nations, and diasporas.
