October WildWise Day Camps - Age 9-13 | Heartwood Woodland Wellness

Cultural Experiences
This October half term, we are offering 2 WildWise Project day camps for older children. We have a number of children who have 'grown up' within Go Wild, and who are now older and ready to move on to finding their own Wild Wisdom. With age and experience also comes responsibility and change, so we want to offer our WildWise participants space to grow and learn whilst connecting and having fun together outdoors. Each session will be about doing practical tasks which enable participants to go more deeply into the skills they have already watched or learnt with us. In this way, they will work towards having their own unique, transferrable skills which will stand them in good stead for later life. They will lead their own experience as our facilitators stay true to the child led ethos which makes Go Wild such a special place to be. Connection with other 'safe' adults is especially important as they get older, and we are lucky to have session leaders who are qualified and experienced youth workers with the skills to support transitions into adolescence alongside the various outdoor skills they also facilitate. Every session will lead towards a 'Waymarker' of competency, such as 'fire by friction', 'hand tool training', 'knife work', 'navigation', 'knots', 'shelter building', 'leadership', 'group facilitation' and 'camp fire cooking' among others. Once each Waymarker is reached, the young person will have confidence and demonstrable competency in a variety of outdoor skills. This could even lead to becoming a young volunteer with Go Wild once they reach 14, and who knows, even a paid job in the future! The young people will decide together if they have reached competency, and over the year ahead, we plan to present various useful gifts as each Waymarker is reached. Over the 2 days this October, the WildWise group will be working on their campfire area, building a deadhedge and a swing, and perfecting their Winter fire lighting skills. Skills we will be working on will include site clearance, using hand tools, friction fire lighting and knots. WildWise is open Saturday 25th and Monday 27th October. Booking in advance is essential and we need a signed and completed consent form for every child taking part as we will have duty of care for your precious ones while they are with us. This will be sent out once booked, a couple of weeks prior to the event. Lunch Options Food From home - Please send your children with a large packed lunch, enough food for 2 snack times, plenty to drink, spare clothing, waterproofs and wearing robust footwear. Food provided by us - We offer toast and s'mores as a supplement to their home brought food, plus a hot chocolate of hot squash in the winter months. If your child has dietary requirements, you can let us know on their consent form. Participants have the option to Meet and Eat with the younger participants on the Kids Wild Adventure Camp whenever they like, or to remain separate as they choose. About us... We think that if everyone could spend a bit more time outside in nature, then the world would be a better place. Suzy is the founder and director of Go Wild With Us UK Community Interest Company (established in 2016) and has been successfully reconnecting children, young people, adults and families with nature since 2008. She has a deep connection to nature and is passionate about supporting others to rebuild their own connections with the Wild. Suzy is a level 3 qualified Forest Schools Leader, a qualified yoga practitioner, holds a BA Hons in English Literature, a Post Graduate Certificate in Youth and Community and a PTLLS level 3. Suzy is a very experienced practitioner, having worked with children, young people, adults and families from a variety of backgrounds and with different abilities since 2001. Find out more about our staff team by vising our website here: https://gowildwithusuk.wixsite.com/gowild/us As well as being great at working with people, they have a wide range of skills and qualifications. Some are Forest School leader trained, and most have specialist experience in working with children and young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. All have trained with Suzy and the Go Wild Team over years to discover their own skills and individual place within our Wild Family. We are incredibly lucky that all of our amazing team remain loyal and dedicated volunteers, some of whom were part of our 'Forest Project' for many years as young people, and who now help us out on a regular basis. Our community offerings would not happen without them. All our facilitators have enhanced DBS checks, are First Aid qualified and have attended relevant safeguarding training. So much more than just a place to drop off the kids for the day This October school holiday, our Kids Wild Adventure Camps are open on Saturday 25th and Monday 27th October from 9am-5pm! This offers plenty of time for your Wildest of children to really get involved in nature and all the fun activities we can possibly squeeze into 8 hours! No parents are needed here. We offer a friendly and accepting, free flowing Forest School inspired space, carefully held by highly qualified and experienced facilitators. Our groups are purposely kept small (10-12 participants) , which means we can give full attention to everyone, and no-one is overlooked. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, with space for experimentation, fun and connection. We want every participant to feel valued and welcome. Expect days of child led activity, using hand tools, making camp fires, arts, crafts, exploration, games and woodland fun at our beautiful site Heartwood based in Frylands Wood Scout Centre, Selsdon. We will be weaving in some themes to our usual Forest school flow too. This October... Saturday is Challenge and Skills day - where you might expect anything from active, physical challenges to wide games and 'brain box work' of solving clues to find hidden treasure. Maybe a more energetic day, where you can also choose between improving your den building, knife work or friction fire lighting skills. Monday is Creative and Chilled Day - using hand tools, arts and crafts materials and the natural world around us to make Amazing Autumnal things. Emphasis is on relaxing, not rushing. Cooking simple things on the fire, and spending slow time with friendly people. Booking in advance is essential and we need a signed and completed consent form for every child taking part as we will have duty of care for your precious ones while they are with us. This will be sent out once booked, a couple of weeks prior to the event. Food From home - Please send your children with a large packed lunch, and enough food for 2 snack times and plenty to drink. Water bottles can be easily topped up so don't send them with a bottle that is too big and heavy! Flasks with hot drinks or soups work well in the colder months too. Food provided by us - We usually offer toast and a s'more to top up the packed lunches, and a hot chocolate or hot squash in the colder months. If your child has any dietary requirments, you can let us know on their consent form. Spare clothing, waterproofs and robust footwear are a must! About us... A lighthearted gathering of a supportive and accepting group for girls, women, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, grand daughters, aunts, nieces and sisters of all ages to come together and hang out around the camp fire, have fun, play, craft, chat, eat and learn! This month, we will be basking under the Summer Solstice Sun. There will be opportunities to visit and honour the bees for a mindful moment at Mrs Burney's Bees, honey tasting by the fire, time for reflection on where this very full time of year has brought us to, with our beautiful community of women and girls. Time to take in the sights, sounds and smells before heading back to the fire, sharing snacks, indulging in chat and the company of some fabulous women and girls! ABOUT US... We face a lot as women in the world today, and back in the day, we wouldn't have faced things alone in the ways we seem to do now. Our little tribe would have been there to turn to for all sorts of reasons - not least to tell us what on earth periods and child bearing and menopause are, and how we can work really powerfully with our female cycles no matter what stage of life we find ourselves in. In modern life we seem so separate in many ways, orbiting many other people, but not really connected or supported. Why not join a community of women who already seem to weave together in different places and spaces in Croydon, coming together time and again and each time building another layer of friendship and community. Come and feel nurtured as part of a supportive female community. We have real wisdom, humour and talent in our midst. If you have a talent to share, bring it! A craft or a song, a biscuit or nothing at all! We will shape these sessions as they go along - who knows where they will lead or what we will get up to! A good old feminine flow! All children must be accompanied by an adult. As a community contribution, we will be offering tickets to this event on a cost only basis, so just £6.50 per head, which covers the per person cost of hiring Frylands Wood, craft materials and refreshments. Under 2's go free as always. All our amazing staff team will be volunteering their services for free to make this event go ahead. With that in mind, if you feel financially able, we offer you the opportunity to make a donation to Go Wild, (absolutely no obligation) which will help us pay for our other community based offers and will go towards things like staff uniform and the equipment which keeps us being able to do Wild Things! You can do this by making a payment of your choice to: Account Name: Go Wild With Us UK Account Number: 65809136 Sort Code 089299. Please add a reference of 'Wild Moon Donation' if you can! Bring snack to share and if you'd like to you can bring something simple to cook on the fire like a tin of soup, hotdogs or beans. We have a toasting rack which you can toast cheese sandwiches or bread in too! There will be hot drinks available. Looking forward to seeing you there! Amy Johnson: Last Flight Out Written and performed by Jenny Lockyer. Directed by Vern Griffiths. Age guide 14yrs+ PLUS after show Q&A with Jenny Lockyer, Jane Delamaine and Amanda Harrison. Saturday 3rd May, Mitre Theatre, Trinity School, Shirley Park, Croydon, CR0 7LB 7.30pm, Doors at 7pm On the morning of 5th May 1930, a small racing green Gipsy Moth bi-plane called 'Jason' took off from Croydon Airport. The pilot was Amy Johnson. Newly qualified to fly and unknown to the world, Amy had a goal to break the record to Australia and make a name for herself in aviation. Taking off, Amy was about to experience one of the most exciting adventures of her life. She flew Jason solo, but together they met with sandstorms, monsoons, looming mountains and crossed shark infested seas.... On landing in Darwin 19 days later, Amy was an international superstar. Born in the year the Wright Brothers made their first flight and into an age where the romantic heights of flying captured her heart, Amy Johnson became the first British woman to qualify as a ground engineer and then, in 1930, the first woman in history to fly solo from England to Australia. Amy lived her life for adventure and the future of aviation. In January 1941, at just 37 years old, Amy was killed while serving her country on a routine flight for the Air Transport Auxiliary, after bailing out of her plane into the Thames Estuary at Herne Bay. In her short life this ‘lone girl flier’ achieved so much while faced with challenges of all kinds. We meet Amy in a world of memories, desires, wishes and ambitions. As we find out about her life we start to see how the pieces fit and the tools Amy used to engineer her dreams to reality.... The show is approx 1hr 10mins long followed by an interval with bar :) The Q&A is the second half. Tickets for this performance are £10 concessions (students, under 18 and senior citizens) and £15 standard plus booking fees. Trinity students free with limited seating available! This performance, is part of The Flying High Tour and the The Flying High Weekend, the 95th anniversary weekend of Amy Johnson taking off for Australia on 5th May 1930! There will be an after-show Q&A with show creator, Jenny Lockyer, Amy Johnson researcher and historian, Jane Delamine and adventure pilot, Amanda Harrison. This will be an opportunity to see the show and then take part in a Q&A exploring aspiration and adventure.... About Jenny Lockyer Since creating this one woman show, inspired by Amy, Jenny has performed it to thousands of people and worked with thousands of children in schools sharing Amy's story through engaging creative workshops. Coming from the world of performance Jenny is excited to see how Amy's story connects with audiences across the country. In creating the Flying High Tour Jenny is taking the show to new audiences, aiming to ispire with Amy's adventures and exploring how we can bring our own dreams to reality. Jenny has been working with Jane and Amanda to create FLY festival; an ambitous 5 year creative movement with an aim to inspire with Amy's story. Mixing the creativity of arts and engineering FLY will provide opportunities to collaborate and create and aspire as we head towards 2030 and the centenary of Amy's flight to Australia. Not too shabby, really. About Jane Delamaine Founder and Director of the Amy johnson project, Jane Delamaine has dedicated the past 13 years to bringing Amy back to life for a whole new generation and not allowing her memory to slip out of history. Jane will have delivered her illusrated talk, The Life and Death of Amy Johnson earlier that day for the Flying High Weekend event at Croydon Aerodrome Hotel. Jane joins this after show Q&A as someone with a vast knwledge of Amy's life and as a believer that Amy's story cannot fail to inspire and empower. About Amanda Harrison Amanda is the true spirit of adventure. From an early age, Amanda had a dream of being a pilot. From small beginnings she has successfully navigated a twenty year journey towards her biggest dream - solo pioneering a vintage aeroplabe across the globe. Solo2Darwin was Amanda's tribute Amy johnson. No stranger to diversions and emergencies, Amanda has faced challenges of dyslexia, cancer and a commerical pilot career in a male-dominated world. Amanda believes that ordinary peopelc an do extraordinary things and is aliving example of this. She's passionate about inspiring others to keep their dreams alive and live them. Not everyone has to elarn to fly... just follow your own dreams. Amanda will have delivered a talk on her Solo2Darwin adventure earlier that day for the Flying High Weekend event at Croydon Aerodrome Hotel. Supported by Arts Council England and Trinity School. For more information on the aims of the tour please visit https://www.flyinghightour.co.uk REFUNDS: You can request a refund up to 7 days prior to the event but should you find you're not able to attend after all, we encourage you to find someone else to come in your place. The aim of Connecting Croydon is to create regular business networking events, and to always use local venues and suppliers in Croydon to run these events, keeping any revenue, after expenses, within our local community. We firmly believe that face to face networking is great for you as a business owner. Not only can the connections you make grow your business, but you can also share experiences, discuss problems, find solutions and learn from each other. Our mantra is Inspire, Grow and Champion. The more we all meet regularly and get to know each other, the more comfortable we will feel working together. So, we actively encourage you to have 121s with the people you meet at Connecting Croydon. We do have a great community who want to help each other, and our charity sector can really do with help right now. Smaller grass roots charities, that are predominantly voluntary led, and who may be facing cuts in Council grants, are the ones we collectively want to help. If you know or support such a charity in Croydon, please put them forward to Connecting Croydon. We use the money we make from the Connecting Croydon event ticket sales (after expenses) to create a pot of money that we will give back to local charities to help them. Any extra donations you wish to make will be gratefully received and are 100% tax deductible (but check with your accountant). It is also great for your Corporate Social Responsibility. Our Charity sector is also keen to learn from local business owners. The best way to run a business, how to raise funds, market themselves, create leads, sales opportunities etc. If you want to champion or mentor a charity, speak to them and offer help. They will also need to use the services of some of the businesses in the room. So, let’s all get together regularly to create a Great and Confident Croydon. Light refreshments will be available.
