each body wakes up on a wave | Glasgow
Jun 6–Jul 27, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Glasgow
A multi-sensory exhibition opening at Glasgow Print Studio will look at new connections between Scotland and Mauritius. Part of the city-wide Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, the exhibition curated by artists Rudy Kanhye & Lauren La Rose will explore the possibilities of transcultural solidarity whilst delving into the realms of postcolonialism, environmental change, and the politics of migration.
Through touch, heat, taste and play, each body wakes up on a wave will explore the entanglements and tensions that characterise creole pluricultural landscapes while underscoring Mauritian diaspora as a case study for transculturalism and alterity.
Each body wakes up on a wave will intertwine new artwork, archival visuals, innovative textile installations, and photographs sourced from archives and libraries in Mauritius and the UK. Through thorough research conducted in Mauritius in February 2024, in collaboration with the Aapravasi Ghat trust, National Library of Mauritius, and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, the artists behind the exhibition have uncovered compelling narratives of migrant diasporas in the global south. This extensive research served as the foundation for distilling fragments of this rich and complex history, utilising historical records to provide a contextual framework for our understanding of the present.
This exhibition will delve into the collective memories of individuals who embody migrant communities, shedding light on diverse geopolitical narratives, systems of labour and untold new economies built by underrepresented women and their resonance within the broader experiences of diasporic individuals. Each body wakes upon a wave serves as a testament to the immense power of art to challenge and enhance our understanding of contemporary life, “Art liberates what the archives obliterate”(Mauritian and French poet, Khal Torabully)
This project has been assisted by Creative Scotland, CHARTS, Aapravasi Ghat Trust, National Library of Mauritius, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, the Intercontinental Slavery Museum, Pamplemouse Botanic Garden, Blue Penny Museum, Unlimited and Disability Arts Online.
