Music Concerts
It all started in August 2024 as then-Artistic Director of Mateada Tommy hosted Kim Churchill on his North American tour for two nights - the final two nights of Mateada's full time music program. Tommy walked away from that show inspired by Kim, and began to practice performing music, solo. While riding directly into a late October atmospheric river of rain on a bicycle down the Washington Coast, the name for his solo project emerged in his weary mind like a ray of sunshine. Van Solo. It was so simple. It reminded him of Star Wars. And Van Morrison. Fast forward 6 months, and he is ready to play out in the world. Tommy is temporarily moving back to the big city where he cut his chops as a younger man to play, play and play some more. He's throwing a show at Mateada on Friday, March 7th, to croon out all of this new material he's been working hard on before he goes. He would love to see you there. Tickets are $20 Advance & $25 Door. 7pm. Official bio below: ... Tom (Tommy) van Deursen has been a touring musician for the past 17 years. Born in Vancouver BC on May 7th, 1989, raised in the tiny mountain town of Kaslo, and currently residing on Salt Spring Island after 12 years of music and career development in East Van. He is an original member of Vancouver’s Tropical Disco-Rockers The Boom Booms, and the frontman for the rock band Small Town Artillery Collective. He has toured Brasil, Europe, The USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Haiti with The Boom Booms and many times around Western Canada + Ontario with STAC. This new project, “Van Solo”, is a one-man-band experience. A place for all the songs and stories that don’t land naturally with the ensembles, and a way to challenge van Deursen musically. He puts on a deep feeling and warm show, not afraid to engage with a crowd and lean into experimentation within the confines of his songs. A little piano and keys, lots of Stratocaster and acoustic guitar, and a wide vocal range all get thrown into the air, with the thump of a kick drum and the goosh of a snare played by his feet to help with the foundations. Think James Blake in a boxing match with Jack White while the lads from Half Moon Run play a well-paced game of bocce ball outside. But the grass is tall. And a storm is coming. Joe Clark was Prime Minister of Canada from 1979-1980 and then served as Foreign Minister for seven years. Although the Progressive Conservative Party no longer exists, Mr. Clark remains the quintessential “Red Tory”—a moderate conservative who believes in both the free market and engaged, socially conscious governments. As foreign minister, Mr. Clark excelled in good faith negotiation and consensus diplomacy. His showed that Canada could play a significant, compassionate and constructive role on the world stage. Mr. Clark’s time as foreign minister coincided with Ronald Reagan’s presidency in the United States, and major challenges in the Canada-US relationship over trade, acid rain, Arctic sovereignty, apartheid in South Africa, and the American intervention in Nicaragua. Today, President Donald Trump is imposing steep tariffs, questioning border treaties, and threatening to make Canada the 51st state. In terms of experience and perspective, there is nobody better than Joe Clark to answer our questions about how Canada can survive this tumultuous period in our history. Welcome to the transformative realm of Cacao Dance - led by Mose. As you step onto the dance floor, embrace the intentional container that encourages silence, creating a sacred space for a deep and immersive journey. The ceremony preceding the dance is led by the beautiful Bruna Bortolato alongside Mose, invoking intention, gratitude, and prayer. This ceremonial prelude lays the groundwork for a profound and spiritually charged dance experience, featuring internationally renowned vocalist Franko Heke. Cacao Dance is more than just movement; it's a conscious exploration to connect with oneself and community. The dance unfolds with a deliberate arc, starting slow and spacious, allowing participants to attune to the music and let their bodies intuitively guide their movements. The overarching goal is to transcend the mental chatter, diving deep into the heart, embodying the emotions alive in the present moment. The dance reaches a climactic peak, pulsating with full-power energy before gracefully winding down to a slower, softer pace for integration. This alcohol-free container draws inspiration from ancient shamanic practices of entering trance, offering a space for profound insight and personal evolution. The intention is clear: to foster a connection with oneself, community, nature, and spirit in support of the greater collective evolution. Cycling Sports & Fitness
This is a grassroots campout taking place at Ruckle Provincial Park. A great event for those dipping their toes into bikepacking/touring who want to meet folks and talk bikes! Sign-up and payment is manged through Eventbrite! Keep an eye out for announcements about routes via email or on our VIBC Discord server. Traditionally folks do their own thing on Salt Spring, but expect an early group ride to the ferries on the Friday morning along the Lochside trail from Victoria. Once on the island, some folks might seek adventure on a Bruce peak out and back, while others might head straight to the campsite! Saturday is likely to include a market visit in Ganges, and perhaps some disc golf. Too early to know whether we'll see any Aurora Borealis this year, alas. A note about refunds: If you can't make it please cancel your ticket or let us know so we can open a spot on the waitlist! This event defaults to no-refunds, though refunds may be considered on a case by case basis (Eg. injury or family emergency) up to 2-weeks before the event - email us at ride@vanislandbikepack.com. Since 2006 here in Cowichan, Elders have been sharing their stories, their history and their healing following the values of nuts'amaat shqaluwun, people working together with one heart, one mind, one spirit. They remind us that the longest journey is from our head to our hearts. We each have much to learn along the way as we learn forgiveness, and practice the values found in kindness, expressed through love and guided by respect. Join Quw’utsun’ Elders who will take you on a journey through time with stories of pre-contact village life, the arrival of settlers, the development of colonies and policies of colonization. Sit inside western systems and indigenous ways of being, to experience the impacts, effects and changes brought about by colonization. Explore the questions of where and how we go from here and join thousands of people who have participated and are committed to walking the road of Q'shintul - walking this journey together. This Summer Solstice weekend (June 20-22) on Salt Spring hosted by Lori Snyder, Laura (Unfolding Senderos) and Samay Cuji and Anna Marie Fitzgerald.. Over the weekend, we'll sit together in sacred tobacco medicine, learn conscious dreaming, spend time communing in nature and foraging, create with plants, practice morning yoga, sing medicine songs, share food, play and take rest. 'This is an invitation to re-learn our relations within the elements. To open ourselves up to Mother Earth's teachings about our own spontaneous, wild, co-operative, and generous energy. To go back to our water-fluidity, to our fire-capacity of doing, to our wind - to listen to the voice of our heart. To re-create our relations with everything that exists. We intend to co-create a space to strengthen our relations in our living world. An invitation to explore wild, native, and medicinal plants; to play medicine music; to practice contemplation within nature, and to dream together. We will immerse in the art of making medicines, enhance our dreaming practice, and watch the night sky. Together we will share food, remember some stories, sit in silence and co-create community. Within the love of Mother Earth, and witnessed by the Spirit of the Mountains and Grandfather Sky, our human nature will be restored.' For more details on the retreat and on the sliding scale payment option of $290-$390, or to book, please email Laura at unfoldingsenderos@gmail.com or DM Lori on Instagram @earthandcompany. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/midi_janitor/ Music: https://linktr.ee/MIDI_Janitor Playback Head Since migrating to Canada in 2008, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Alexandre Klinke has remained largely focused on the traditions of his home country, making music that blends folk rhythms with rock, pop, and electronic elements. Thirteen years later, the scope of his practice has expanded to include original soundtracks, field recordings, and sound & video art. With the birth of his two sons, his Canadian roots have grown deeper, and a new approach to music making has appeared - this time privileging timbre and sonic texture over melodic and harmonic development. Still utilizing his traditional instruments (piano, acoustic guitar, cavaquinho, viola caipira), Klinke began recording a series of minimal improvisations onto magnetic tape (both reel-to-reel and cassette) in late 2020. The sounds of the artist's home surroundings (birds outside the window, his children playing) seep continuously into the mix, as well as field recordings taken in his travels in Canada and Brazil. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexandreklinke/ Music: https://linktr.ee/alexandreklinke Dove Magic Lorri Rae Clark is a multidisciplinary artist and sound practitioner creating immersive sonic experiences through crystal singing bowls, vocals and synthesized tones. Her music serves as a meditative journey—one that blurs the boundaries between body, space, and sound Through intuition and energetic sensitivity, Lorri’s compositions act as portals to altered states of perception. Layered frequencies, drones, and harmonic overtones invite listeners into a deep state of presence, where inner landscapes expand and time begins to dissolve. Whether performed live or experienced in a spatialized audio environment, her work is designed to hold space for personal transformation, collective stillness and connection beyond the physical. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lorrirae_/ Music: https://dovemagic.bandcamp.com/ Sean Evans Sean Evans is a Composer and Sound Design Artist based out of Vancouver, B.C. While he loves to make all types of music, his current practice finds him working in long-form ambient and drone pieces. Sean is always looking for that trance-like state right before you’re about to doze off, and see how long he can ride that out through texture and repetition. Having released music on Canadian labels Deep Sea Mining Syndicate and Hotham Sound, his latest release ‘Movements’ is currently in stores and online.
