The Hart Fell Challenge | Moffat

Cultural Experiences
This is a challenging walk and must only be attempted by very fit hill walkers who are appropriately equipped. At 2,650ft, Hart Fell is the highest point in the surrounding hills of Moffat. Its most impressive feature is the deep sculptured glacial glen of Black Hope to the east of the summit. The walk takes the more gentle ascent from the west. Having been dropped off at the junction to Old Newton Farm, our route takes the track through the valley to the wooden bridge that crosses the Lochan Burn. Although this is a tough climb, your new walking mates and the spectacular scenery will spur you on. From that point, we commence the lung-busting 1,968ft climb via Billscleuch Moor to the Hall Fell Trig Point. Here we will take a well-earned break and simply enjoy the views. The return journey takes the more sedate descent along the ridge line southwest via Arthur's Seat, allowing walkers to enjoy the stunning scenery. Eventually, we arrive back at the community hall, having completed the six-mile challenge. Transport is included to take us back to town. Top tip This is an all-day walk so you may want to bring a packed lunch Information Source: Moffat Walking Weekend | eventbrite
The Merlin Trail | Moffat

The Merlin Trail | Moffat

We will take a minibus to Annan Water community hall just 6km from Moffat, where we start this walk. This is an upland route following Auchencat Burn to the iron rich spring of Hartfell Spa. Merlin, the wizard of Arthurian legend – in fact a real-life nomadic druid – lived right here in Southern Scotland in the sixth century. Hartfell Spa is a significant location on the Merlin Trail. Learn more here or visit Moffat Museum. Discover the healing waters of Hartfell Spa This walk is a steady 3.5 miles gently uphill and has an off-the-beaten-track feel. We will meander along an easy footpath across fields and open hillside of thick grass, heather and mosses, passing a deer farm on the way. There is a smaller track before reaching the spa with steep slopes to the right where you need to be cautious especially if the ground is wet. Hidden in this glorious landscape is Hartfell Spa, which was discovered in 1748. But beware: the path is quite narrow on the lead up to the spa. The spa water contains iron and calcium deposits and was bottled and sold to tourists worldwide in the 1800s in the belief that it could cure many ills including ‘debility and anaemia’. Do try the water from within the well and outside. It's perfectly safe. On the way back we take a slight detour on a softer descent passing the deer farm again (some are very friendly and curious) past a field of young and quite beautiful trees. A minibus will return us to Moffat. Top tip : Take a torch to see the carved ceiling stone of Hartfell Spa. Information Source: Moffat Walking Weekend | eventbrite

On this walk, you may hear about: the Clan with no name, the farmer and his grateful guest and the man who was never satisfied. Prepare to see Moffat as you've never seen it before Who knows what you may discover on this walkabout? Having spoken to Bill he doesn’t seem to know either but he has hinted that there may be some previously undiscovered revelations about the Beatles connection to Moffat. Forget Liverpool and Hamburg – did you know Moffat had its own role in shaping the Fab Four's destiny? Or so Bill reckons. To be fair, having gone to the same schools as three of the Beatles (Ringo didn’t go to school), he sees himself as a bit of a ‘moptop’ expert. Another of Bill’s passions is 14th-century accountancy methodology but hopefully he won’t be bringing that up on the walk. All the stories are true... except the ones that are not. Cultural Experiences
This is a challenging walk. It must only be attempted by very fit hill walkers who are appropriately equipped. Walk alongside one of the UK’s highest waterfalls – the mighty Grey Mare’s Tail. The National Trust for Scotland’s nature reserve is an impressive glacial landscape with a 60m drop. At the top is Loch Skeen, a tranquil spot and the highest significantly sized upland loch in Southern Scotland (500m above sea level) with a dramatic backdrop of towering peaks. Along the way, it's highly likely that you’ll catch a glimpse of a few wild goats and you may even see an osprey fishing in Loch Skeen. The reserve is also home to Britain's rarest fern and freshwater fish. Look out for the peregrine falcon – the world’s fastest animal. This is a strenuous 13.5km high level walk, with some rough terrain in places and over 910m of ascent A minibus will take us to the starting point: the National Trust for Scotland car park. From here the route initially ascends a steep path. Once the gradient eases, we will leave the path, cross the Tail Burn and then steadily climb White Coomb, a Corbett (Scottish hills over 762m). The post-glacial landscape is an open mosaic of heather and rough grazing that includes eight habitats of European importance and many plant species of international, national and regional significance. The reserve is botanically diverse, containing the richest assemblage of rare upland plants in Southern Scotland. Recognised as a Special Area of Conservation, Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve is popular with hill walkers, botanists and wildlife enthusiasts. There is also historical evidence of Iron Age settlers and the Covenanters who sought sanctuary here in the 17th century. Transport is included. Top tip this is an all-day walk so you are advised to bring a packed lunch. Information Source: Moffat Walking Weekend | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
Join us for an afternoon wander around three wildlife and community projects right on Moffat’s doorstep. We will start off with a gentle climb up Gallow Hill, once part of the Earl of Annandale Estate and a 19th-century pleasure ground. Roe deer are a common sight around the hill and we may be lucky to spot a red squirrel We walk through a mature beechwood and then a circular route around the developing broadleaf woodland planted by a local community project, offering fine views of surrounding hills. We can look out overhead for buzzard, kestrel or a skein of pink-footed geese – or at our feet for wildflowers, fungus and mosses. We nip across town and the River Annan to our two adjacent nature reserves. First up is Dyke Farm reserve with its meandering paths through a mix of orchard, broadleaf woodland, ponds and wetland. It was reclaimed by the local wildlife club from a boggy patch of unused farmland. The neighbouring community nature reserve (once the source of material to help construct the nearby M74) has different but complementary habitats, with a large expanse of open water and meadows fringed by hawthorn. Across the two reserves, we will see a range of tree species, wildflowers, lichen etc. and likely see cormorant, ducks, geese, heron, a variety of small birds and maybe our ‘star visitors’ – great white and little egret. We pass the recently installed COVID memorial and end our walk by crossing the fields back to Moffat. Information Source: Moffat Walking Weekend | eventbrite
