Join one of our Wardens for a morning walk around the reserve. Learn about the history and ecology of the Reserve, and how our team manages it for the benefit of its wildlife and people.  This is a monthly walk with seasonal theme, discover what makes Lackford special and how management practices change through the year. Are you looking for hands on practical experience, an opportunity to get outdoors, a chance to earn your Duke of Edinburgh award or a way to meet new friends? If so, Young Wardens if the group for you! Activities vary throughout the year but include; learning to use tools to safely carry out practical tasks that contribute to the management of the reserve; carrying out surveys of key wildlife species, providing information that helps to inform conservation activities on the reserve. Please note the age range for Young Wardens before booking. We have volunteering opportunities for ages 17+, please contact us for more information. All Young Wardens need to be dropped off by an adult who can confirm their emergency contact details at the start of the session. Join us every 2nd Saturday of the month for Wild Families! A session for exploring the reserve, learning about wildlife, and taking action for nature. Guided by our Engagement Officer. Sessions will vary each month but will typically involve a wildlife activity and a craft. Please note all children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is aimed at families with children aged 5+, however, younger siblings are welcome to attend when accompanying an older sibling and you can book their ticket at a discounted rate. We also run a weekly Wild Tots session for toddlers, and monthly sessions Weekend Wildlife Club for unaccompanied 8-11 year olds and Young Naturalists for unaccompanied 11-16 year olds. Join us for an afternoon walk looking for butterflies across the reserve. Please note as with all nature encounters, we cannot guarantee sightings especially in poor weather. This walk is aimed at adults but interested teens 11+ are welcome if accompanied by an adult with a ticket. Enjoy time spent outdoors, make connections with others and with nature. Hang out in the hammocks, make shelters, natural art, whittle and use the shave horse. This event is aimed at 11 - 16 year olds. All our sessions will be held entirely outside, so please ensure your child(ren) come with plenty of drink. Please ensure they are dressed appropriately for the weather (suncream, waterproofs as appropriate to the weather).  Closed toed shoes and long trousers must be worn as there are stinging nettles, brambles and biting insects in the woods. Under Kevin’s leadership, teenagers will develop their observation skills and learn how to capture exciting wildlife photos, with cameras, tablets or smart phones. All are welcome, from complete beginners to keen photographers. The course is set in the beautiful setting of Lackford Lakes, which has a fantastic array of wildlife to capture on camera. In the stunning surroundings of Bradfield Woods, discover how to identify the common trees in the countryside in summer using their leaves, flowers, fruit, and bark, with an opportunity to practice skills indoors and in the field. Suitable for beginners. Andrew Holtham is a tree enthusiast and the author of a Winter Guide to the Common Trees of Hertfordshire. Copies of Andrew's book will be available to purchase for cash on the day. Tea & coffees will be provided and are included in the cost of the course.
