Leveraging UDL 3.0 to Increase Engagement | The Riviera Ridge School
Jul 25, 2025 (UTC-7)
Santa Barbara
As demographics shift in our independent school populations and our students represent more diverse backgrounds, experiences, and learning needs than ever before, you may be feeling stuck. As a teacher-leader or administrator, what may have always worked well in the past, is no longer effective. Formerly effective teaching strategies, practices, and systems are no longer serving our communities.
Ready for a shift? UDL 3.0 can serve as a powerful framework for increasing learner engagement and reintroducing a sense of joy for learning. Based on neuroscientific research, Universal Design for Learning shifts the focus away from “fixing” students who differ from a mythical “average” or standard, and calls us to look at accessibility of the overall design so that the learning environment is truly inclusive to all – respecting all of the multiplicities learners bring. With UDL, it isn’t about convincing students to learn our way; it’s about creating spaces that welcome students to learn their way.
Through interactive activities, collaboration, and reflection, you will learn practical strategies for designing with UDL 3.0 that can work in your context.
Join us for an all-day in-person workshop to gain familiarity with UDL and the major shifts associated with the recent 3.0 updates. We will then reconnect for three, 90-minute virtual sessions across the school year to focus on the design process, applying and reflecting on UDL-aligned strategies, and addressing relevant problems of practice.
Participants will:
Understand the major shifts behind UDL 3.0
Identify the dispositions, habits, and resources required to cultivate a brave learning space that affirms relationships, builds community, and promotes healthy dialogue in a diverse setting
Practice designing with UDL 3.0
