Let our experienced birding guide show you the best bird-rich locations between Saskatoon and Pike Lake Provincial Park. During this 3-hour Pike Lake birding tour, we will walk some trails and visit a variety of bird habitats inside and outside of the park. Both novice and experienced bird watchers are welcome. Tour may be joined in Saskatoon or at Pike Lake Park. A loaner pair of binoculars may be available if requested. The leader will bring a spotting scope to allow you to view the birds under high magnification. Pike lake is home to nesting ducks, grebes, herons and other water birds. Marshes along the original river channel provide habitat for nesting Sora and Virginia Rails, Marsh and Sedge Wrens, Nelson's Sparrows plus Red-winged and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. A fen next to Pike lake often attracts LeConte's Sparrows, American Bitterns plus rare Yellow Rails which are heard during late evenings. Sandy grasslands near Pike lake attract Sprague's Pipit, Savannah and Baird's Sparrows plus Western Kingbirds and Upland Sandpipers. Humid woodlands along the old river valley provide habitat for nesting Veeries, American Redstarts, hummingbirds, owls, flycatchers and other songbirds. Possible birds to be seen in all seasons during hikes include Ruffed Grouse, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Pileated Woodpecker, Great Horned Owl, Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee, Blue Jay, White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven. Some additional possible birds to be found in summer include Red-necked Grebe, Wilson's Snipe, Belted Kingfisher, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Western Kingbird, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireos, Baltimore Oriole, Spotted Towhee and Common Yellowthroat. Let our experienced birding guide show you the best bird-rich locations between Saskatoon and Goose Lake. During this 4-hour birding tour, we will visit a variety of bird habitats. Both novice and experienced bird watchers are welcome. Situated about 70 km from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada, Goose Lake is a bird oasis that attracts large numbers of water birds including many species of ducks, geese, grebes, shorebirds, herons. Immense nesting colonies of Franklin's Gulls and Eared Grebes nest here regularly. Prairie nesting shorebirds such as willets, American Avocets, Killdeer and Wilson's Phalaropes are found throughout the spring and summer. Arctic-nesting plovers and sandpipers often appear in large numbers during May, July and August. The surrounding pastures attract grassland birds including Western Meadowlarks, Sprague's Pipit, Baird's Sparrow. Sometimes, lucky birders might find Long-billed Curlew or Black-necked Stilts or White-faced Ibis or egrets or a Peregrine Falcon.cker, Black-capped Chickadee, Blue Jay, White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven. Some additional possible birds to be found in summer include Red-necked Grebe, Wilson's Snipe, Belted Kingfisher, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Western Kingbird, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireos, Baltimore Oriole, Spotted Towhee and Common Yellowthroat. During songbird migration during May, we may also find Purple Finch, Pine Siskin, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-white, Tennessee, Orange-crowned, Cape May, Bay-breasted, Palm, Wilson's and Yellow-rumped Warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Radisson Lake is designated as one of Canada's Important Bird Areas. This lake is home to large numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds. The surrounding grasslands and aspen forest provide nesting habitat for prairie and woodland birds. Following a 45 minute highway drive from Saskatoon, we will drive around the lake stopping at various points watching for numerous species of ducks, grebes and shorebirds. Our waterbird list may include Horned and Eared Grebes, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Canvasback, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Ruddy Duck. Black Terns, Ring-billed and Franklin's Gulls are normally found flying over the lake. Breeding shorebirds should include American Avocet, Willet, Killdeer, Wilson's Snipe, Wilson's Phalarope and Spotted Sandpiper. If water levels are suitable, migratory shorebirds may be abundant here in August. Prairie birds may include Swainson's Hawk, Loggerhead Shrike, Mountain Bluebird, Western Meadowlark, Sprague's Pipit, Vesper Sparrow and Savannah Sparrow. Join us for this leisurely driving tour. Visit Last Mountain Lake – the First National Bird Sanctuary to be established in North America! On the recommendation of Edgar Dewdney, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Territories, this Last Mountain Lake Bird Sanctuary was set aside in 1887 by the government of Sir John A MacDonald (Canada’s first prime minister) for the protection of wildfowl, the first such reserve on the North American continent. It was established as a federal migratory bird sanctuary four years after Parliament passed the Migratory Birds Convention Act of 1917. Internationally recognized, Last Mountain Lake wildlife area is a migration stopover point in spring and fall for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, cranes and countless smaller birds, and a summer nesting area for over 100 species, including several rare species. Can you survive the Zombie Apocalypse? Saskatoon Zombie Scavenger tests your ability to survive after a zombie apocalypse. The game leads you through the city, where you will have 60 minutes to collect supplies to survive during this interactive scavenger game. With the whole world in chaos and zombies outnumbering the living 10 to 1, small colonies of the living are doing all they can to survive. Using your smartphone, your team will be tasked with scavenging the city for food, supplies, weapons, and shelter. The more things you find, the more points you get, the more likely you are to survive. Along the way, you will be asked to do a challenge or answer a trivia question in order to be rewarded with virtual weapons to ward off the zombies. The area is crawling with relentless zombies, and rival colonies are moving in. If you get too relaxed, rival colonies will take what you worked hard to find. The goal is to find all of the items in hopes that you will survive the zombie apocalypse. Scavenger Rules: In 1 hour your team of up to 10 people will use a smartphone to search the area for much -needed food, supplies, and shelter. The more things you find in the 1 hour, the more points you get and the more likely you would be a survivor. The task will not be easy. Trip starts in Saskatoon but can meet up at Chaplin with visitors from Regina, Moose Jaw, Swift Current and other parts of the province. We are hosting the 7th Game Theory this year which will showcase battles from some of the best Breaking artists across Canada and performances from local street dance collectives. We hope these performances from seasoned street dance artists will inspire the next generation of Saskatchewan artists to continue growing the scene and to develop their potential. This year is different than the rest as this is the first time we are doing a B-girl category in the prairies. Join a 3-day Grasslands National Park Birding Tour. We will visit the best birding hotspots in the west block of this Saskatchewan park near the Montana border. We also plan to make stops at some of the best shorebird hotspots: Chaplin Lake Important Bird Area, Reed lake, Herbert Marsh. We may also stop at Douglas Provincial park. Your leader will be Stan Shadick with Saskatoon Custom Bird Tours. All proceeds support Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation. Some of the special unique birds in the Grasslands Park region include Burrowing Owl, Ferruginous Hawk, Golden Eagle, Sprague's Pipit, Upland Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew, Baird's Sparrow plus other species of grassland birds. Canada's only Black-tailed Prairie Dogs occur here as well as a wild herd of bison. We also plan to look for resident and migrant shorebirds in Chaplin and Reed Lakes Important Bird Areas.
