An evening of Indian classical artistry arrives in Leicester from the bandwagon of Kala Festival 2025. Bringing together movement, melody, and rhythm in a single, immersive experience. Three sessions in this single evening concert make it a must-attend for all rasiks of our traditional arts. Kathak dancer Jaymini Sahai , whose training began at the age of six under Nilima Devi in the Jaipur tradition, has evolved into one of Britain’s most expressive storytellers through footwork that sparks both percussive fire and graceful geometry. And, she is local to Leicester. Pioneering Indian slide-guitarist Pandit Debasis Chakroborty draws on the Senia-Maihar lineage to let steel strings sing with the inflexions of the human voice. With him is rising artist Upneet Singh, a Leicester local rooted in the Benares tradition, who balances accompaniment finesse with forward-looking creativity. The heartbeat of the night belongs to two distinguished tabla players for a duet, the first time in the UK. Pandit Sanju Sahai , a sixth-generation torchbearer of the Benares Gharana, brings a reputation for lightning-fast fluency and melodic clarity. Ustad Akram Khan , a seventh-generation exponent of the Ajrara school, complements that brilliance with the deep bass resonance and intricate phrasing that have earned him thousands of international appearances. Together, these performers weave ragas coloured by microtonal bends. Rhythmic cycles that expand and contract with thrilling unpredictability. And stories etched in both sound and movement. Listeners can expect moments of hushed reflection, passages of driving virtuosity and a finale that sends tabla voices into exhilarating dialogue. Reserve your place early, as demand is expected to be high and capacity is limited. Information Source: KalaSudha | eventbrite

The Men's Room - Supporting Male Mental Health and Suicide Come join us at Lumbers Ltd for an event focused on male mental health and suicide prevention . Let's break the stigma and open up conversations about important topics that affect men's well-being. This is a safe space to share experiences, gain support, and learn about available resources. Together, we can make a difference. See you there! Poor mental health in men in the UK still has huge negative and a debilitating stigma attached to it. The reality is that there isn't enough help to go around, and we are still pointing the finger at those that speak out.In 2022, there were 5,642 suicides registered in England and Wales, around three-quarters of suicides registered in 2022 were middle age males (4,179 deaths; 74.1%) and this number continues to grow with male suicide now the fastest growing rate of suicide being reported. The cold reality of this is that every 2 hours in the UK a man dies from suicide… This launch event is for me to share my journey with you, on how I have navigated (negatively & positively) the dark depths of poor mental health. I will then share with you my rational for inviting you personally and how as a collective we can reach out to brothers, whom are suffering in silence, unable to share, their demons and challenges with their current circle of friends or family. For centuries, feminist writers and thinkers have turned to myths, legends, fairytales, religious stories, and cultural traditions to make sense of women’s experiences. All of these come under the umbrella of ‘folklore’. This talk will explore the enduring relevance of folklore, asking how these stories can be reclaimed and reimagined for the 21st-century feminist. We’ll trace figures like the witch, the shapeshifter, and the maiden across different traditions, examining the societal norms they were created to enforce and how feminist thinkers have reshaped them into symbols of resistance and possibility. Finally, we will ask why we continually return to ancient stories to tell new ones — does this suggest that we’re out of new stories, or is it a part of a longstanding literary tradition in women’s writing, to look back, to subvert dominant myths, and to challenge the patriarchal ideas embedded in our society? Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Speaker Bio: Dr Shelby Judge is a Lecturer in Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Derby, where she researches digital feminist and popular feminist responses to Incels and the Manosphere. A night with Fletch and his band is a guaranteed fun night out! IS ALAN FLETCHER A BETTER MUSICIAN THAN DR KARL! Here's what they say. Overall Alan Fletcher delivered a show that surprised in the best possible way. He had a fantastic vocal quality throughout as well as some solid guitar playing, but what elevated the evening for me was the balance he struck between thoughtfulness and fun and the strength of his connection with the crowd. It’s safe to say he’s going to appeal to music fans way beyond just those who know him from ‘Neighbours’ Entertainment-focus.com – Laura Cooney Had the pleasure of meeting Fletch in Worthing this week. A joyful evening of songs old and new. Highly recommended - Andy Dobson What a great night at The Steam and Whistle!! Thank you so much! It was the tenth year of the siege of Troy, the year that Calchas, the soothsayer, had predicted that the city would fall.” Paris of Troy chose Aphrodite the Goddess of Love as the fairest of all and gained Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, as his reward. However Helen’s furious husband, determined to get her back, assembled a fleet of a thousand ships, sailed to Troy and laid siege to the city. Now, all the mightiest Princes of Ancient Greece are camped before Troy's high walls in their black, beached ships... Award-winning story teller Clare Goodall and historical musician Lizzie Gutteridge combine forces to bring you an epic tale of love, tragedy and loss in an energetic and punchy adaptation, where the characters come to life even if that life then ends brutally in bloodshed. Atmospheric musical accompaniment adds to the impact, with a mixture of ancient Greek music and improvisation on aulos (ancient double pipes) an lyres. This is the epic that everyone had heard of but few have read. This musical adaptation brings it to life, showing why it's been so well known for 3,000 years, and how it deals with issues that are still relevant today. This event is held in St Nicholas Church. Dating back to the 800's, St Nicholas is built almost entirely of repurposed Roman rubble and is a remarkable survival of pre-conquest architecture, being the oldest church in Leicester, and one of the 10 oldest in the UK. Join us for a wonderful evening of music, and step back in time. Though the money you spend on tickets goes to support St Nicholas Church and keep this ancient building open and alive, we don't want anyone to be priced out of good art, so there is no 'proof' required for you to purchase a concession ticket. If you can't afford to pay full price, for whatever reason, that ticket is for you! Tickets will also be available to purchase on the doors. Children under 12 go free. Best parking for this event is at the Highcross John Lewis, which is just £2.50 after 5pm. Information Source: St Nicholas Church, Leicester | eventbrite

Today, Leicester is one of the most diverse cities in Britain. This is often seen as part of the city’s recent past, a product of Leicester’s rapid industrialisation in the late 19th century, drawing in economic migrants to boost its workforce, which was then bolstered in the 20th century by the arrival of new communities escaping conflict and persecution. Over the past 20 years, however, archaeological excavations in the city have started to reveal tantalising clues that its population has been culturally mixed for much longer. Join archaeologist Mathew Morris from University of Leicester Archaeological Services for a talk about Leicester's ancient links with Roman Africa, including the northernmost known representation of the Egyptian god Anubis, people with possible African ancestry living in Roman Leicester, and a link with the Roman Empire's first African emperor, Septimius Severus. Sukhvinder Singh “Pinky” is a renowned Indian tabla virtuoso celebrated for his extraordinary technical mastery, dynamic expressiveness, and captivating stage presence, hailed as one of India’s most dynamic percussionists. Born in Sri Bhaini Sahib , Punjab, he embarked on his musical journey playing traditional instruments such as the dholak and jorhi, but it was under the tutelage of the esteemed Pt. Kishan Maharaj —after an auspicious debut at the 1978 Satguru Pratap Singh Sangeet Sammelan—where he deepened his tabla artistry through rigorous riyaz in Varanasi. Over the years, Sukhvinder has become a highly sought-after accompanist, performing with legends like Pt. Ravi Shankar , Ustad Vilayat Khan, and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan , and earning a Grammy in 1994 for his work on “A Meeting by the River” . As a solo tabla artist, he commands acclaim for his versatility across both the Punjab and Benares gharana styles, and has had the honor of performing as a soloist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra ; in 2016, Ustad Zakir Hussain even proclaimed him to be the foremost exponent of the jorhi—underscoring the brilliance of his tabla musicianship. In this tabla solo, he will be accompanied by Satwinder Pal Singh on the sarangi, an artist celebrated for his sensitive musicianship and deep command of this soulful instrument. Steeped in the rich traditions of Indian classical music, Satwinder has established himself as a sought-after accompanist, known for his ability to weave lyrical depth and emotional resonance into every performance. His artistry complements the rhythmic brilliance of the tabla, creating a perfect balance of sound and spirit that promises an unforgettable evening for lovers of Indian classical music. Full day's training offered on 6 different dates (see below) in Eyres Monsell Children Centre (please DO NOT go to Community Centre) Tuesday April 1st Thursday 26th June Weds 17th Sept Thursday Nov 6th Tuesday 20th Jan 2026 Thursday 5th March 2026 This course is designed for both DSL’s and deputy DSL’s that are new to the role, it can also be used as a refresher training. Designated Safeguarding Leads are also known as Designated Safeguarding Officer or Lead for Safeguarding there are many equivalents. (This training is not for school DSLs) This is an advanced level course for those that have already had Safeguarding Awareness training including the signs and indicators of abuse. The session will explore and provide clarity on the questions: what is the role of the DSL? What are the responsibilities of the role? Do these differ between different organisations? And if yes, should they? What is the relevant legislation and guidance underpinning this role? Why do people ‘miss’ the signs and fail to take action? How do we overcome these barriers? How can we start to show that we are putting the learning from serious case reviews into practice? Moving on, it will cover key updates (the content of these will be dependent on what the Safeguarding Board identify at the time of the course as key information). It will then move on to ensure that participants are confident in identifying and responding to concerns. We will look at ‘signs of safety’ in the referral context, record keeping, what might happen following a referral, the need to follow up and be persistent. We will also look at escalation procedures. In the afternoon we focus on Multi-agency working including information Sharing and give an overview of Safer Working Practice including recruitment. Exploring both serious case reviews and participants own experience of multi-agency working at all levels. We will dispel common myths around information sharing and share best practice. 'There will also be a chance to look at an audit of practice and to assess areas for development. Trainer: Tracy Charlton By the end of the course participants will: • Be clear of their safeguarding role and responsibilities as a DSL and the key safeguarding legislation and guidance. • Understand the barriers that can exist to taking action and have identified ways to overcome these and create a safe culture for staff and children. • Be confident in decisions about what action to take, what records to keep and what referrals to make when there is a concern. • Understand local processes and procedures, including escalation. • Have explored the necessity for multi-agency communication and effective multi-agency work to safeguard and protect children and have the confidence to challenge when needed. Objectives: • To be clear of your role and responsibilities as a DSL • Understand the Barriers that exist to staff taking action and identify ways to overcome these and create a safe culture for staff and children. • To start to be able to state how you as a DSL can put the learning from serious case reviews into practice. • To understand your responsibilities in relation to key local and national themes – e.g, voice of the child, online safety, mental health, and the resources available to you. • Recap on the signs and indicators of abuse with a focus on the ‘lived experience of the child’ and factors creating additional vulnerability. • Understand local processes and procedures. • Identify the need for ‘professional curiosity’ and being conscious of ‘disguised compliance.’ • Know how to respond and how to make a quality referral. • Identify how to keep effective records. • Demonstrate a commitment to Persistence – notice, check, share, follow-up, escalate. • To understand the DSL’s responsibilities in terms of multi-agency working and information sharing. • To explore the why this is a persistent theme in serious case reviews - what are the myths and barriers and how to work to overcome these. • To look at safer working practice including recruitment. • Audit of practice and assessment of areas for development in your setting that you have identified as a result of this training. • Evaluation of Development and Learning. This training is not aimed at schools. Please e-mail us your full name after the training, if you would like a certificate. Information Source: LLR Safeguarding Children Partnerships | eventbrite
