A young boy, shipwrecked on a remote island, discovers he's not alone when he encounters an old Japanese soldier who retreated there after World War II. As dangerous invaders appear on the horizon, it becomes clear they must join forces to save their fragile island paradise. This gripping hand-drawn animated tale with its message of working together to protect nature, has never felt more relevant. Written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce from Michael Morpurgo’s beloved 1999 novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom features an impeccable voice cast including Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy and Ken Watanabe.  The Pocket Film Festival activities have been made possible with support from Film Hub Midlands through funds from the National Lottery. Wunderkind director Gints Zilbalodis has taken the animation world by storm with his beautifully crafted sophomore feature Flow , which has received a multitude of awards and nominations to date, including two nominations for both BAFTA and the Academy Awards.   The mystical world he creates in Flow is in peril. There are traces of human inhabitants, but they are now nowhere to be seen as water begins to flood the landscape. The story begins following a small, solitary cat as the shoreline rises and the home where it once lived is submerged underwater. Forced to flee, he happens upon a refuge boat containing a calm and unperturbed Cabybarre who seems amenable to his presence, and the two begin a journey on the water towards higher ground. Along the way they cross paths with a lemur, obsessed with collecting shiny objects, a boisterous and excitable dog and a stoic, mysterious secretary bird. Together, as they traverse the landscape on their fable-like quest, the ragtag team of animals must learn to trust each other and work together to survive.  Flow pushes the boundaries of animation, immersing audiences in a world before unseen. The Pocket Film Festival activities have been made possible with support from Film Hub Midlands through funds from the National Lottery. Film Hub Midlands support people to watch, show, and make films in the Midlands. Information Source: Unseen Cinema | eventbrite

Mushroom Foray with John Wright | Kingcombe Visitor Centre

Mushroom Foray with John Wright | Kingcombe Visitor Centre

Fungi are essential to life on earth as the primary degraders and they have a fascinating biology. Kingcombe and Powerstock are some of the best places in England to find fungi with a list of over 500 species, many of them rare, all of them beautiful. The huge variation in geology and plant life at Kingcombe Meadows ensures a variety of habitats which allows for a plethora of species to be present. The day consists of a brief introduction to the fungal world and answers the questions: What are mushrooms and toadstools? How do they fit in to the natural world? How on earth do you tell one from another? You will then head out on a guided walk where all the fungi found will be discussed and where possible identified. Due to the nature of this event, there will be some walking over rough and uneven ground, and some time to pause as you listen to discussion points. Please note: This event is part of our wider work on surveying our reserves which are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in many places. We do not allow any private fungi foraging on our reserves at any time. John is not only an expert mycologist, but also a foraging expert: mushrooms, hedgerows, seashores. He brings an infectious enthusiasm for the natural world. Over a period of twenty-five years, he has taken around seven hundred such forays, many of them based in the South West and at Kingcombe in particular, so has a wealth of information at his fingertips to share with you. John is now one of the country's leading authorities on foraging for food, often seen on national TV, including River Cottage. John contributes to national publications and has written a number of books in The River Cottage foraging series, as well as his best-selling books including “The Forager’s Calendar”. Price: £75 per person. All money raised helps to support the vital conservation work of Dorset Wildlife Trust, protecting wildlife now and for future generations to come. Times: Arrive from 9.45am for a 10am start. Course will start at 10am and finish around 4 - 5pm. What to bring: As you will be outside; please bring suitable clothing, wet weather jackets, good walking shoes and a backpack to carry personal belongings. Optional extras, if you have them already, include: a hand lens, any fungi field guides, and a camera. Photo: Daisy Meadowcroft Terms and Conditions for Participants DWT reserves the right to cancel the course at any time. In the event of DWT cancelling an event, a full refund will be issued. Cultural Experiences
After spending ten years swinging from trees as an arborist, Adam decided a job was needed where he could keep both feet firmly on the ground, whilst still being a part of the woodland around him. Having previously studied engineering, woodworking seemed a natural step, and working with the natural inclination of green wood soon developed into a passion. Many of his spoons have exquisite kolrosing decoration, this is a traditional Scandinavian technique where single incised cuts are made to create a pattern, the spoon is then oiled, and a colourant rubbed into the incisions and once burnished the pattern is sealed in. Adam lives in West Dorset and runs spoon carving courses across the UK. During this one day course, discover how to safely use the axe, knife and hook knife, what to look for when selecting wood, spoon design and how to carve with confidence. Develop a passion for this heritage craft and connect with the natural world. Your spoons will be made from locally sources greenwood. You will create a unique spoon using simple hand tools.
