A Symphony of Lights | Victoria Harbour

ENDED
Hong Kong
A Symphony of Lights is a laser light and music show in Hong Kong. It is completed by a total of 47 skyscrapers and landmark buildings located on both sides of Victoria Harbour on both sides of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula. It is a large-scale light and music show in the world. Every night at 8 o'clock, you can see the urban buildings on both sides of the Victoria Harbour turn into a stage with sound and light intertwined in the neon lights and music, showing the splendid night of Hong Kong. The magical lights emitted by each building illuminate the sky over the Victoria Harbour, supplemented by music and narration, dreamy, gorgeous and impactful, allowing you to have a deeper understanding of the beauty of Hong Kong. The sound and light show starts at 8 o'clock every night and lasts about 13 minutes. During these 13 minutes, you can watch the performance for free on both sides of Victoria Harbour. The best viewing spots are from the Avenue of Stars to the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the waterfront promenade of the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai or the sightseeing ferry from Victoria Harbour. In Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront Garden and the Golden Bauhinia Square waterfront promenade, you can hear the music and narration of The Symphony of Lights. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, it is played next to English, and on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, it is Mandarin narration. Play Cantonese. The regular performance on weekdays usually has five segments. You can watch the gradient effect of colored lights on the facade of the building, the dancing of lasers and searchlights in the dark night, and the kaleidoscope-like rotating light pattern, which is colorful. If you choose the "Symphony of Lights on the Hong Kong" Victoria Harbour tour, you can enjoy two birds with one stone while you are on a luxury sightseeing cruise, enjoying the night view on both sides of the Victoria Harbour and enjoying a sound and light show on the water. If you want to take the ferry, please visit: http://www.discoverhongkong.com/china/see-do/tours-walks/guided-tours/victoria-harbour/SOL-harbour-cruise.jsp#tour2 booking. Note that there is an additional fee for the sightseeing boat, which is HKD 180 for adults, HKD 162 for children aged 3-12 and seniors over 65 years old. It is recommended to choose to watch the performance from the seaside of Tsim Sha Tsui. You can see most of Hong Kong's landmark buildings on Hong Kong Island, such as Bank of China Building, HSBC Bank, International Finance Center and other landmarks. With these buildings as the background, you will feel the performance more spectacular. Located on this stretch of coastline, the waterfront observation deck next to the Clock Tower and Star Ferry Pier is a great place to watch the show. If you encounter special festivals, you can also see fireworks on the roof of the building and on the sea. Since the end of 2007, A Symphony of Lights has been expanded into a large-scale New Year's countdown event every year. Starting at 23:40 on December 31, a regular light show will be held first. In the 20 seconds before and after the New Year, the 420-meter-high Hong Kong The second phase of the International Finance Center will start the fireworks show. As the countdown counts down, fireworks on both sides of the building are set off layer by layer, accompanied by flickering and shining laser searchlights. At zero o'clock just to welcome the new year, the seven-colored fireworks of the building and the splendid fireworks of the 16 skyscrapers next to the harbour are set off at the same time. After the countdown, there will be a two-minute fireworks show, which is very beautiful and shocking.

A true heir to Franz Liszt carries on composer’s legacy Combining masterful virtuosity with artistic expression, Minsoo Sohn embodies the ideals of musical excellence in both his playing and his teaching. He studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun, and has recently been appointed Professor of Piano at his alma mater. Sohn is a highly sought-after piano teacher, and among his students is the piano prodigy Yunchan Lim, the youngest performer to win the Van Cliburn Piano Competition at the age of 18. Much like Sohn, Franz Liszt was a genius performer with a natural aptitude for the stage. A prolific thinker and composer, his six Consolations are imbued with the melancholy and fervent devotion of a collection of poems entitled Poetic and Religious Harmonies, while the 12 Transcendental Études exploit every known piano technique in a set of highly original and harmonically daring structures. Musical intelligence and breathtaking virtuosity were the hallmarks of Liszt’s performance style, and he has found in Sohn a perfect heir to carry on his shining legacy. It is no accident that during the modern Atomic Age of the 1950s and ’60s—when the elemental nature of the relationship between light, energy, and matter had been made evident to all mankind— many painters began to focus uniquely on form and color in their work: elevating these two central components as the sole protagonists of their art. In America, this marked the period of color-field painting, with artists like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman creating large-scale canvases filled with blocks of emotive, abstract color. In Europe, another type of color-form painting also became a mainstay of various avant-garde artists from Pierre Soulages and Alberto Burri, to Lucio Fontana and Zao Wou-Ki. From the 1950s onward, each of these artists used their own modes of color-form abstraction to explore the intrinsic relationship between light, energy, space, and matter. For Soulages, as his (“beyond-black”) paintings reveal, the concentration on black pigment allowed for the discovery of illumination and light. “My instrument is not black,” Soulages insisted “but the light reflected from the black.” His works including and , exemplify his ethos: “I found that the light reflected by the black surface elicits certain emotions in me. These aren’t monochromes. The fact that light can come from the color which is supposedly the absence of light is already quite moving, and it is interesting to see how this happens.” By applying paint in dense, material layers and using varied tools as well as brushes to generate smooth and rough surfaces, Soulages created surface textures that absorbed or emitted light. “Rather than movement, I prefer to talk of tension,” Soulages said, “and rhythm, yes. We can also say form: a shaping of matter and light.” While Soulages made use of monochromatic fields of black to portray light, Italian artists such as Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana took monochrome painting in other directions. For Burri, planes of single hues, as seen in (1986–87) became a means of exploring the innate nature and self- expressive potentials of painted matter—while for Fontana, monochromatic tone was a vehicle for the articulation of deeper understandings of cosmic space. In his investigations of space, including his works, and (1968) in particular, Fontana destroyed the material surface of the canvas with a slash of a knife, opening up the saturated red picture plane to the embracing voids of space. In so doing, he created a painting that unites form, color, material, and space through his decisive gestures. A similar use of spontaneous energy to form painterly matter underpins the pictorial abstraction of Chinese artists like Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun, who, working in Paris from the 1950s onwards, sought to meld traditional Chinese painting with the color-form explorations of Western abstraction. By contrast, Pat Steir’s series reflects the attempts of an American-born artist to draw inspiration from Eastern approaches to color and form. Deeply influenced by Chinese paintings, Zen Buddhism, and the example of John Cage, Steir’s work, exemplified by (2017), investigates the aesthetic potentials of chance, gravity, and the weight of pigment to generate a painting’s ultimate form. Steir has said, “The way colors mix and the way they touch each other explains the world to me like mathematics explains the world to a physicist.”
