Enjoy what neighbour John Ruskin called 'the best view in Europe' from Lawson Park , high above Coniston Water - the artists' residency HQ of internationally-acclaimed cultural organisation Grizedale Arts . The imaginatively refurbished RIBA award-winning farmhouse and barns opens up its extensive collections of art, crafts, books and vintage design, telling alternative histories of the Lake District by the myriad of creative people the house has hosted over the last 25 years. In the 12 acres of land around Lawson Park, artist / film maker and Head Gardener Karen Guthrie has created an inspirational series of gardens from scratch. Recently featured on BBC Gardener's World, the gardens have hosted visits from gardeners Adam Frost, Huw Richards, Stephanie Hafferty and Piet Oudolf. Visit The Paddies, a mountainside allotment created by Japanese farmers; The Meadow, two wildflower-rich and biodiverse acres to get lost in; The Brexit Orchard, a collection of European apple varieties and The Farmhouse Garden, a riotously colourful frame to the historic drystone wall farmstead. During the Open House & Garden, Karen is on hand to lead tours which cover her design principles and chemical-free, no-dig approach to garden-making. There's also an on-site cafe serving up light lunches, cakes and drinks created from Lawson Park produce, and publications and crafts for sale, all created at Grizedale Arts' own pottery at The Farmer's Arms , its community pub. IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION: We encourage visitors on foot and on bicycle. There is also ample parking on East of Lake road, a stunning 30 minute walk from Lawson Park. If you do need to drive to Lawson Park you must pre-book a parking space for the same time as your visit. To do this, follow the 'Add-Ons' link in the event listing. To book our accessible parking space, contact us directly. EXACT LOCATION: What3Words = ///power.action.resembles Sorry, strictly no dogs except guide dogs . Learn to Construct a Timber Frame with Jack Cardno | Lawson Park

Learn to Construct a Timber Frame with Jack Cardno | Lawson Park

Cultural Experiences
THE WORKSHOP: This workshop will take you through the process of constructing a structural frame from timber over six consecutive days, 9.30am to 17.00pm daily, 7th to 12th July (residential participants arrive 6th July and depart 13th July). We will start by setting out the site and laying various foundation types and learning the process of site carpentry. By the end of the week, we will raise the frame together and have a self-standing structure. We will be working with locally grown timber, and the workshop will combine practical carpentry skills with sessions on how woodwork can help us critically engage with everything from tree anatomy to patriarchy. We welcome participants of all skill levels, including complete beginners and anyone with a disability or special access needs. We will be working full days, using power-tools and doing manual tasks and working on uneven and soft ground. If you would like to know about our set up, please get in touch at theblackshed@grizedale.org This workshop is part of building THE BLACK SHED, a construction project at Lawson Park and a learning platform set up to build skills and capacity among women and marginalised genders* in construction and self-building, in response to the intersecting inequalities of gender, housing, disability and climate. A low-cost, self-build home THE BLACK SHED will provide adaptable residency accommodation for artists and curators with access needs, carers or dependents, increasing access to Grizedale Art’s rural residential arts programme. Everything will be handmade, from the structure to the door handles, centred around a programme of practical workshops that will teach the skills needed to build a house and make it a home. We will be building with natural, local, sustainable materials that are considerately sourced and make sense in the Lake District, and teaching skills that are adaptable and transferable, giving participants the opportunity to learn, take-away (and build one for yourself!). The project is imagined as a small but important step towards building the tools and a platform for different ways of homemaking to develop - a demonstrator project for creative practices of collective self-build and sustainable development for a rural area where local provision is inadequate and unequally distributed. *Responding to the gender-imbalance evident in all aspects of making a house, from design to construction, our workshops are exclusively open to anyone who identifies as female (including trans-women) or non-binary. ABOUT JACK CARDNO: Jack Cardno is director of the social craft and architecture firm Common Practice. He’s been a carpenter for over 8 years and an architectural educator for 5. He has an interest in materiality and mental health, specifically how making with natural materials can not only foster connection between the maker and the ecosystem that nurtured the material but also connect the maker to broader social and environmental concerns. LOCATION: Lawson Park, East of lake, Coniston, LA21 8AD. There is limited parking close to the site, so we encourage you to travel by public or shared transport if you can. Lifts can be arranged from Ulverston train station on the day of arrival & departure. PARTICIPATION: You can join the workshop as a day participant or a resident participant. Day participation is aimed at people you live close enough to Lawson Park to come in the morning and travel home after the workshop day. Price includes tuition, materials, tools, lunch, tea & snacks Resident participation is aimed at people who have travelled further for the workshop and need a place to sleep. Price includes tuition, materials, tools, 6 nights’ accommodation, 3 meals a day, tea & snacks For questions about arrival & departure times for residential participants, to ask any other questions, or to tell us more about dietary requirements, please send us an email at theblackshed@grizedale.org PRICE: The Black Shed Project is grant funded and non-profit, and we have tried to allocate our resources to keep the price as low as possible while paying our craftspeople fairly. We are aware that financial means is a common access barrier and so we are offering a concession price for people who feel unable to afford this, whatever the reason. If you wish to apply for the concession fee, please send us an email explaining your circumstances at theblackshed@grizedale.org Information Source: Grizedale Arts | eventbrite

We walk at a steady pace for this hike, after which we visit a local pub for a chat and refreshing drink. A moderate/good level of fitness will allow you to complete the walk and ascents. This course is designed to get you as involved as possible - this includes identifying, picking and tasting a range of wild species that will be found on the day. There will also be samples of wild food and drink for everyone to get stuck into and a pre-made wild snack! The focus with all of our workshops is on the 4 'F's of Foraging: Fungi, Fruit, Flowers and Foliage . We aim for an array of these elements on every session we run (weather and season permitting!) Event sold out or can't make this date? Head to www.foragebox.co.uk/workshops or view our Eventbrite profile to browse all available sessions. What To Expect Our 'Forage & Nibble' workshops are exactly that: you will spend the day learning how to forage with your tutor and then be treated to a 'wild snack' to put it all into context! These have become our most popular events and are available at numerous locations around the country. DURATION: 3 hours (approx 2.5 hours of foraging and 30 mins preparing and eating your wild snack) We like to keep some elements a surprise for the day, but here is what you can expect from your foraging workshop: a short introduction regarding the safety and format of the day discussions around foraging tips, safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law a circular walking route taking in different growing environments around the site. Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild and a wild snack. Your wild snack might be something we find on the day freshly cooked in the woods, a hunk of homemade sourdough with some wild pickles and preserves, or even a big slice of cake (our tutors are decent cooks too so it could be something even better!) our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time. Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session . At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of our wild products and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end. Who Is This Workshop For? These events are perfect for everyone - families, bushcrafters and dog-walkers alike! Nobody is made to feel out of their depth or silly for not knowing what certain things are, so these events suit absolute novices to more experienced hobby foragers alike. We strongly believe that foraging is for everyone , with all demographics welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or ethnicity. Please read our FAQs further down the page to find out about dogs, children and mobility. IMPORTANT INFORMATION KIT LIST: What to bring with you DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: You will be asked for any dietary requirements when completing your booking. Please note that our workshops may not be suitable for vegans and coeliacs unless you inform us of these dietary requirements in advance - we may use butter or bread, for example. Bookings made within 48 hours of the event start time may not allow for your tutor to cater for specific dietary requirements - please get in touch if this is a concern. Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the destination. EXACT MEETING POINT: In the car park Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3b1nuDF23r8sujP47 What3Words: https://w3w.co/noises.afterglow.tribe PARKING: Pay and display parking is available at the National Trust car park (free for NT members). Please be considerate when leaving your car and do not block gates or access for other road users. TOILETS: Toilets are not available at this venue. Please arrive well in time for the start of the workshop, allowing extra time for the distance from your parked car to the meeting point and any toilet trips - we don't tend to wait for late-comers! Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. If you cannot find your tutor around that time, there is a chance you are looking in the wrong place, so please check the event information for the exact location (not the postcode) Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket! Minimum number of guests for this event to go ahead: 8 people PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide guests with a contact telephone number for your tutor. This is for privacy purposes but also because it is impractical to do so - your tutor simply wouldn't be able to take a call whilst with a group. If you need to get in contact, please use the email function via eventbrite or our website . Start getting excited!
