Where Does My Food Come From? | Hen Corner

Jul 29, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brentford
Family Events
Where does my food come from? We are delighted to invite you to join us for a special afternoon exploring our urban small holding and discovering more about where our food comes from... Please note: all children need to be accompanied by a paying adult. 'What a wonderful day of learning for our Year 3 children! From trying on bees suits and balancing chickens on their heads to learning about the more serious issues of organic farming and the importance of recycling. So much to learn that the children simply didn't want to leave! The session was jam packed with learning and fun and I would highly recommend Hen Corner to any school particularly, those in urban settings. The session gave the children a taste of farm/small holding life and opened their eyes to exactly where our food comes from as well as learning what is possible to grow here in the UK.' Whilst we will be basing our time together on the sessions that we offer to local Primary Schools, Team Leader Sara Ward has over 25 years of experience working with pre-school children and their families.During our time together, we can explore where our food comes from looking at plants (fruit, vegetables and trees), bees for honey and as pollinators, and chickens for eggs. Activities for the afternoon: Welcome with home made cookies, organic cordial for the children and tea/coffee for the grown ups. Introduction to Hen Corner and where our food comes from, followed by each activity below: Meeting the chickens (everyone can have a stroke/cuddle if they like) and an opportunity to collect the eggs Watching the bee hives from a safe distance, studying live bees from behind the glass of an observation hive, exploring the life cycle of a honey bee, dressing up as a bee keeper and tasting some of our award winning honey. Exploring the Kitchen Garden and fruit trees to discover what food can be grown and harvested in London Planting herb seeds that can be taken home to germinate 'Sara, thank you (and your chickens) for making the children feel so welcome in your garden. It was such an interesting and funfilled day. The children also say a big thank you for the delicious juice and cookies. We will definitely be back again. :)' Each child needs to be accompanied by a paying adult and we ask you to be responsible for the children that you bring whilst you are here at Hen Corner. Hen Corner is our family home and we will confirm full details of address, parking, dietary requirements, etc. when we have received your booking. 'Very inspiring learning experience. Sara's welcoming was so warm and professional, the most enjoyable afternoon meeting her and her family as well as the rest of the group.' Tania, 03 June 2013 To find out a bit more about Sara and Hen Corner please see here , and as you prepare for your course you may find some of our short films interesting. FIX YOUR OWN BIKE: cable rim brakes and back gears | BITSB bespoke workshop

Jul 19, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Hounslow
Cycling
Sports & Fitness
Please be sure to read this class overview in full before booking your place. A lot of the bikes we see here at the Back In The Saddle Bikes workshop have problems with both their brakes and gears. If you're looking for a hands-on class that will give you the knowledge and confidence to fix these sorts of problems yourself, this is it. In terms of brakes, the class deals with rim brakes (not disc brakes) and how to clean wheel rims and brake pads as part of a regular maintenance regime, as well as replacing pads if the existing ones are too worn or contaminated for cleaning to be worthwhile. Rim b rake types suitable for this session are V-brake, cantilever, dual pivot and side pull. We'll show you how to replace brake inner and outer cables too, and adjust the brakes and cables to get the most effective, reliable braking possible. When it comes to gears, this class covers how to clean and maintain a rear-derailleur set up. As parts will eventually need to be replaced, it also takes you through fitting new inner and outer cables followed by setting the limit screws (which stop the chain falling off, for example) and cable tension to give you optimal gear changes every time. PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately, we're unable to accommodate ebikes, tricycles, recumbents, tandems or cargo bikes in this class. The class starts at 10am, finishes at 4pm, and there's a break for some lunch. Information Source: Back In The Saddle Bikes | eventbrite

Hello beautiful Soul, Join us on the 9th April, 28th May, 11th June and 9th July . This event is a unique opportunity to connect with yourself and experience a powerful sound journey. Join us at ANIMA for an evening of self-reflection and relaxation. During the ceremony, you will have the chance to focus on your inner self and set intentions for personal growth. The sound journey will help you unwind and release any tension or stress you may be carrying. Don't miss this chance to nurture your mind, body, and soul in a beautiful setting surrounded by like-minded individuals. Come ready to embrace a transformative experience! This experience will help you to: - Reduce your levels of stress and help to activate your body's self-healing - Energise your parasympathetic system to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure - Release and balance stacked energy - Improve your alpha and theta brain waves that will lead to better sleep What do I need? Bring your own yoga/fitness mat/sleeping bag, blanket, cushion, warm socks, and some warm clothing - your body temperature tends to drop in a state of deep relaxation . It will be eye masks available for £1 each, or if you prefer, bring your own eye pillow or mask to cover your eyes with - I believe that covering your eyes makes the experience deeper. If you would like to, bring your own mementos, crystals or lucky charms to the event, I found this very powerful at the time of setting an intention or just to recharge them and bring their power back. Stay hydrated before and after the session. You can buy your botanical drink at ANIMA. What to expect? I start the session with a little breathing exercise and a heart mediation to allow us to connect with our intention and inner wisdom. You will be lying on your mats or sitting in a chair if you have mobility concerns, I will then start playing the instruments that will lead into the Gong's sound. After the sounds stop, I will allow several minutes of Sunyata (emptiness, spaciousness) and then I will guide you to back from relaxation and grounding, after which you can stretch and enjoy that beautiful moment of fullness. It is important to keep your mind open to the experience - the vibration of the sound will bring you what your body, mind and spirit need at that particular moment in time and space. Made the sound be within you! NOTES: Tickets are £20 plus the Eventbrite service fee or £20 cash/card at the venue. On arrival, please leave your shoes by the entrance and find your own space in the room. IMPORTANT : Please be on time. Remember to switch off your mobile phones . TESTIMONIALS : "Thanks to the sounds I listened to, I have been able to relax and immerse myself completely in the sounds. I could feel the energy move in my body, and every single sound made me imagine something about my life, something positive about my future. I perceived only positive vibes and good energy around me."- Pier "I strongly believe in the power of the gong, being able to free your soul to another level and push you into another dimension. Cristina is an excellent facilitator in doing this and what did I get from this session has been more than an out-of-body experience"- Laura ABOUT ANIMA: ANIMA is a botanical bar and restaurant nestled on the banks of the River Thames in Ferry Quays, Brentford. About Refugee Tales Since 2015, Refugee Tales walkers have been embarking on small and large scale walks in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, and people who have been held in immigration detention . This year we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary! We have been met with kindness and hospitality every step of the way. Working in collaboration with migrants and those who have experienced the UK asylum system - and taking Chaucer’s great poem of journeying as a model - established writers and people who are experts-by-experience share their tales with local communities at evening events . We also enjoy live performances from renowned musicians which never fail to get us up and dancing! The tales we tell are published in five volumes by Comma Press . Some have been written collaboratively with authors such as Ali Smith, Nobel Prize winner Abdulrazak Gurnah, Kamila Shamsie, Patrick Gale, and Bernardine Evaristo. Others are first-hand accounts told directly by the people who experienced them. In sharing these stories, Refugee Tales gathers and communicates experiences of migration and the reality of immigration detention in the UK. As we walk, we create a space in which the language of welcome is the prevailing discourse . The Walk of 2025 To find out more about this year's walk please go to our Refugee Tales website .
