Welcome to the Northern and Rural Community Safety Symposium! Date: August 26th, 2025 Location: Laurentian University - 935 Ramsey Lake Rd, Sudbury, ON (Fraser Building) Welcome to the 1st Biennial Northern and Rural Community Safety Symposium! This one-day tricultural event brings together researchers, practitioners, community stakeholders, and those with lived experience to discuss and exchange knowledge, challenges, experiences, research findings, and perceptions on northern and rural community safety (NRCS). Northern and rural communities have unique safety concerns compared to urban areas, and the geographical and social differences make responses particularly complex. Community consultation has led to the identification of three primary themes: Sex Trafficking, Intimate Partner Violence, and Mental Health and Addiction. This symposium is meant to respond to the intricate nature of NRCS and bring academics and community stakeholders together, which we hope will be the first step in a collective effort to respond to community safety in northern and rural communities. We anticipate the relationships, experiences, and knowledge fostered by the symposium can be leveraged to produce collaborative and community-based innovations and responses. This is your chance to share, learn from, or engage with experiences of community safety! Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for the registration and website to be live momentarily. Recently featured on BBC Gardener's World, the gardens have hosted visits from gardeners Adam Frost, Huw Richards, Stephanie Hafferty and Piet Oudolf. Book now to ensure your spot! "A special, memorable show!" Donna Huber's childhood was not a typical one. Her father was in "Retail" and was transferred frequently. Because Donna traveled often as a child, this type of life became normal for her and she continues to travel to this day. Now performing as Shania Twin, the top Shania Twain tribute. After leaving home, Donna settled in the small village of Thessalon, Ontario. She resided there for 3 years and was extremely successful with her small bakery business which she operated from her farm house situated on 160 acres of land. She then moved to Sudbury to live and work with her sister. It was here that she was surprised and pleased to receive compliments from strangers commenting on how she looks like "Shania Twain". Even Shania Twain had commented that after seeing a poster of Donna, "I thought that was me!!! Donna is the best 'Shania Twain tribute out there." Donna put in countless hours practicing to sing like Shania, watching her videos over and over, studying to emulate her moves and the way she presented herself. Donna met with an agent in the music business and after listening to her sing, and not to mention her uncanny resemblance to one of country music’s most beautiful and successful women, it was obvious that Donna was about to embark on something that would change her life forever. They worked to put a band together, practiced for a few months, and the rest is history. Donna has been on the road since March of 1996 as the most successful Shania Twain tribute Act in Canada and throughout the United States and Europe. Whether on stage or in the studio, Music Mel connects deeply with her audience, using her voice to tell stories that resonate. Brand new creative writing workshop - Creative Writing in a Day Always wanted to write but not sure where to start? Have loved writing previously but need to reinvigorate your passion and spark some ideas? Everyone is welcome on this brand new workshop. ............................................................................................................................................. During this one-day workshop you will cover the three foundations of writing: believable characters, convincing settings and strong plotting. With plenty of activities to get you writing (including a short ‘field trip’), by the end of the day you will have an outline for a short story or narrative poem. There’ll be time to answer your questions or advise you on your writing projects; but mainly to inspire you to write. With expert tutor David Richardson. David has been teaching creative writing classes for over 20 years. During this time, he has worked on the coalface of writing as a copywriter in the motoring industry. He also volunteered for the Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators organization, regularly meeting authors and agents. This has given him an insider’s understanding of the publishing world. It is an excellent background to make his one-day workshops not only fun but also focused and fulfilling. The workshop is perfect as a standalone activity but also provides a foundation for learners who may wish to return in the new academic year for a longer course with David. Please feel free to purchase a hot drink from the machine during your workshop (card only) we also have a water machine and would be grateful if you could bring your own bottle. You will be able to purchase food/drink if you choose on your short field trip as we are a very short walk from the town centre, a petrol station and supermarket. Please note we run all our courses based on a minimum number of participants. If you are no longer able to attend the class please contact the team at your earliest convenience. Cancellations received within 48 hours of the class start time are non-refundable. If any of the courses you wish to attend are full or you cannot make the date, please let us know so that we can register your interest and let you know of future opportunities or add your name to a reserve list. You can contact the team on sudbury@easterneducationroup.ac.uk or telephone 01787 880619. Information Source: Sudbury Learning Centre | eventbrite

This course is designed to get you as involved as possible - this includes identifying, picking and tasting a range of wild species that will be found on the day. There will also be samples of wild food and drink for everyone to get stuck into and a pre-made wild snack! The focus with all of our workshops is on the 4 'F's of Foraging: Fungi, Fruit, Flowers and Foliage . We aim for an array of these elements on every session we run (weather and season permitting!) Event sold out or can't make this date? Head to www.foragebox.co.uk/workshops or view our Eventbrite profile to browse all available sessions. What To Expect Our 'Forage & Nibble' workshops are exactly that: you will spend the day learning how to forage with your tutor and then be treated to a 'wild snack' to put it all into context! These have become our most popular events and are available at numerous locations around the country. DURATION: 3 hours (approx 2.5 hours of foraging and 30 mins preparing and eating your wild snack) We like to keep some elements a surprise for the day, but here is what you can expect from your foraging workshop: a short introduction regarding the safety and format of the day discussions around foraging tips, safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law a circular walking route taking in different growing environments around the site. Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild and a wild snack. Your wild snack might be something we find on the day freshly cooked in the woods, a hunk of homemade sourdough with some wild pickles and preserves, or even a big slice of cake (our tutors are decent cooks too so it could be something even better!) our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time. Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session . At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of our wild products and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end. Who Is This Workshop For? These events are perfect for everyone - families, bushcrafters and dog-walkers alike! Nobody is made to feel out of their depth or silly for not knowing what certain things are, so these events suit absolute novices to more experienced hobby foragers alike. We strongly believe that foraging is for everyone , with all demographics welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or ethnicity. Please read our FAQs further down the page to find out about dogs, children and mobility. IMPORTANT INFORMATION KIT LIST: What to bring with you DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: You will be asked for any dietary requirements when completing your booking. Please note that our workshops may not be suitable for vegans and coeliacs unless you inform us of these dietary requirements in advance - we may use butter or bread, for example. Bookings made within 48 hours of the event start time may not allow for your tutor to cater for specific dietary requirements - please get in touch if this is a concern. Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the destination. EXACT MEETING POINT: In the car park Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3b1nuDF23r8sujP47 What3Words: https://w3w.co/noises.afterglow.tribe PARKING: Pay and display parking is available at the National Trust car park (free for NT members). Please be considerate when leaving your car and do not block gates or access for other road users. TOILETS: Toilets are not available at this venue. Please arrive well in time for the start of the workshop, allowing extra time for the distance from your parked car to the meeting point and any toilet trips - we don't tend to wait for late-comers! Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. If you cannot find your tutor around that time, there is a chance you are looking in the wrong place, so please check the event information for the exact location (not the postcode) Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket! Minimum number of guests for this event to go ahead: 8 people PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide guests with a contact telephone number for your tutor. This is for privacy purposes but also because it is impractical to do so - your tutor simply wouldn't be able to take a call whilst with a group. If you need to get in contact, please use the email function via eventbrite or our website . Start getting excited!
